Mitsubishi Triton 2024 Review

In the local commercial vehicle and small engineering vehicle market, single-cab pickups have always been the core representative of "tool attributes" — users need reliable carrying capacity, robust off-road performance, and a sufficiently practical price. The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton Single Cab, as a new choice in this segment, is equipped with a 184PS 2.4T diesel engine and a 6MT gearbox, with a standard 4x4 drive system and starting price of only RM 101,980. This test drive focuses on verifying whether it can combine practical cargo-carrying capabilities for daily use and off-pavement passability while meeting the basic needs of no-frills users in terms of features.
In terms of appearance, the Triton Single Cab continues the family's rugged style with overall straight and clean lines. The front adopts a large grille, paired with sturdy chrome trims, which offers good recognition; the halogen headlights on both sides feature automatic lighting, making them convenient for daily use. The truck's side maintains a compact feeling characteristic of a single-cab pickup, with a 3130mm wheelbase providing the foundation for an extended cargo bed. The cargo bed side panels are of a moderate height, making loading and unloading easy. The rear design is simple, with LED tail lights offering sufficient brightness, and rear fog lights come standard, providing safety in adverse weather conditions. The 17-inch wheels paired with 265/65 R17 tires have thick sidewalls, capable of handling light off-roading and bumpy roads.
Sitting inside the cabin, the interior design focuses on practicality with no overly flashy elements. The center console uses hard plastic materials, which, while lacking luxury, are wear-resistant and easy to clean, aligning with the utility vehicle positioning. A multifunction steering wheel comes standard, allowing control of volume and phone calls to minimize distractions while driving; the instrument panel is backlit with analog dials, providing clear readings and direct display of core information like RPM, fuel level, and water temperature. The seats are manually adjustable with firm padding, offering decent support that reduces fatigue during long drives. The front air conditioning system is manually controlled, with knobs that have moderate resistance and are easy to operate. Storage spaces include door panel slots that can fit large water bottles and an open storage compartment under the center console for holding phones or small items, meeting daily storage needs.
In terms of space, the single-cab layout provides ample front-row seating space; even a 180cm driver can have over one fist of headroom and legroom after adjusting the seat properly. Although the cargo bed dimensions are not individually specified, the 3130mm wheelbase is longer than some competitors, promising a potentially high carrying capacity. With a fuel tank capacity of 75 liters and an official fuel consumption rate of 8.8L/100km, a full tank offers about 850km of range, reducing the hassle of frequent refueling.
In dynamic driving, the low-end torque of the 2.4T diesel engine is a highlight — with 184PS and 430N·m of torque, it reaches maximum torque output at 2250-2500rpm. At start-up, a slight press on the accelerator delivers noticeable power output, making it nearly effortless when carrying light cargo. The 6MT gearbox offers clear gear positioning with moderate shifting travel, allowing even beginners to adapt quickly. The 4x4 drive system supports high-speed 4WD switching, and when navigating muddy or gravel roads, engaging 4WD significantly improves grip. During a test on light off-road terrain in the suburbs, the vehicle easily tackled slopes of about 15 degrees and shallow ruts and potholes.
In terms of handling and chassis, the front double-wishbone independent suspension performs well in filtering out minor bumps, while the rear leaf spring suspension focuses on load-bearing capability—when driving over speed bumps with an empty load, there is a slight bounce; however, with a 300kg payload, the suspension compresses to a reasonable range, and driving stability actually improves. The steering wheel has moderate steering effort, and while the precision is not exceptional, it is completely sufficient for a utility vehicle. At high speeds, the vehicle body remains stable without a floating sensation. The braking system uses ventilated discs at the front and drum brakes at the rear, with linear braking force output. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains stable posture.
In the fuel consumption test, we drove 100km each on city roads and suburban highways. The fuel consumption was approximately 9.5L/100km in urban areas (including 20% congestion) and around 8.2L/100km on suburban highways, with a combined fuel consumption of 9.0L/100km. This is close to the official data, and the fuel economy performance is acceptable. Regarding noise control, the diesel engine noise is noticeable at idle, but wind noise and tire noise are well-suppressed while driving. At speeds below 60km/h, in-vehicle conversations are generally unaffected.
In summary, the core strengths of the 2024 Triton Single Cab are clear: a 4x4 drive and 2.4T high-torque engine as standard in the 100,000-yuan price range, making it fully optimized for utility purposes; its basic configuration is sufficient, and its fuel consumption and range meet expectations; its durable design is well-suited for frequent freight and light off-road scenarios. Compared to competitors in the same class, it boasts superior performance in power parameters and drive configuration, while retaining an affordable price point.
This vehicle is clearly designed for users with practical needs—such as small construction contractors, farm owners, or individual business owners requiring frequent cargo transport and occasional travel on unpaved roads. It lacks luxury features and does not focus on comfort, but it performs exceptionally well in the three key aspects of "capability to carry loads, ability to drive, and reliability." If you're looking for a purely utilitarian pickup truck, the Triton Single Cab is a practical choice.
