Specs

In the local pickup truck market, models with a combination of household comfort and light off-road capability have always been the focus of attention for family users and small business owners. The 2023 Nissan Navara 2.5 VL Black Edition is precisely a version targeting this niche market. It not only continues the durability of the Navara series but also enhances the visual quality through the exclusive design of the Black Edition, while being equipped with a full set of active safety features that are rarely seen in the same class. The main purpose of this test is to evaluate its overall performance in daily commuting, family outings, and light unpaved roads to see whether its price of 146,900 ringgit is worth it.

The first glance at this vehicle, the exclusive design of the Black Edition indeed grabs attention. The front face features a blacked-out V-Motion grille paired with full LED headlights and daytime running lights, making it highly recognizable under the sun; the sides feature 18-inch black alloy wheels and black side steps, further enhancing its sporty feel; the rear showcases blacked-out taillights and a black rear bumper, maintaining a uniform overall style. The lighting system's performance is also very practical, with the LED headlights being bright enough to cope with nighttime rural roads. The automatic headlamp function automatically adjusts based on lighting changes, eliminating the hassle of manual operation.

Opening the door, the interior layout is focused on practicality. The symmetrical design of the center console features an 8-inch touchscreen at the center, with a clear operational logic and relatively quick response speed. In terms of materials, the top of the center console is covered with soft materials, paired with black piano lacquer trim. While it doesn’t feel luxurious, the quality is significantly improved compared to entry-level models. There are plenty of highlights in terms of configuration: the front seats are equipped with 8-way electric adjustment and 2-way lumbar support, effectively easing lower back fatigue during long drives; the 7-inch digital instrument panel provides rich information such as real-time fuel consumption and four-wheel-drive status; features like keyless entry, one-touch start, and rain-sensing wipers are very convenient for daily use. It's worth mentioning that the front row is also equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, which is particularly practical for users needing to connect external devices.

Spaciousness is traditionally an advantage of the Navara, and its 5260mm length and 3150mm wheelbase ensure ample space in both the front and rear rows. For a front-row passenger with a height of 175cm, there is still a fist-width of headroom after adjusting the seat; rear passengers get two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, ensuring a comfortable experience even on long journeys. For storage capability, the door panel storage slots can hold two large bottles of mineral water, the central armrest box has a moderate capacity, and the rear seats can be folded, expanding for more storage space. The rear is also equipped with air conditioning vents and USB ports to take care of rear passengers' needs.

In terms of power, this model is equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a maximum power of 190PS and reaching maximum torque at 2000rpm, paired with an AT transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quick in the initial acceleration phase, and it doesn’t exhibit the lag often seen in diesel vehicles. During acceleration, gear shifts are smooth, and even when overtaking at high speeds, a deep press on the gas pedal quickly shifts down gears, providing sufficient power reserves. Switching to sport mode makes the power output more aggressive, suitable for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration.

Handling performance exceeds expectations, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, making it easy to control even on narrow urban roads; the front double-wishbone independent suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively filtering out most vibrations when passing speed bumps or uneven roads while maintaining vehicle stability; when entering corners, the suspension provides sufficient support, and body roll is minimal, giving the driver enough confidence. As a 4x4 model, its four-wheel-drive system supports high-speed and low-speed modes, and when switched to 4WD mode on mildly muddy or gravel roads, the vehicle's off-road capability is significantly improved, easily tackling most unpaved surfaces.

In the fuel consumption test, we drove 200 kilometers under mixed road conditions, with 60% on urban roads and 40% on highways. The final measured fuel consumption was 8.2L/100km, which is a relatively excellent figure for a 2-ton diesel pickup truck. Regarding noise control, the engine noise at idle is minimal, and at high speeds, wind noise and tire noise are kept within acceptable ranges, not affecting the normal conversation of passengers inside the vehicle. The seat comfort is also commendable, with soft padding and good support, effectively reducing fatigue during long-distance driving.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Nissan Navara 2.5 VL Black Edition are evident: the exclusive design of the Black Edition enhances its appearance, the full suite of active safety features (including blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and active braking) stand out among similar models, and the spacious interior and practical configurations can meet the needs of family users. The diesel engine’s balance of power and fuel efficiency is also notable. Compared to the Toyota Hilux 2.8 Rogue in the same class, it is more affordable and better equipped; compared to the Ford Ranger 2.0 XLT, it offers more comprehensive comfort features.

The target audience for this vehicle is clear: families placing emphasis on safety features and space, outdoor enthusiasts requiring light off-road capabilities, and small business owners needing a dual-purpose vehicle for cargo and personal use. It is not a pickup truck designed for extreme off-road performance but strikes an excellent balance between comfort, practicality, and off-road capability. If you are looking for a pickup that can meet multi-use demands, the 2023 Nissan Navara 2.5 VL Black Edition is worth considering.

Owner of 2018 Nissan Navara Double Cab 2.5 SE (M)
As an owner of the 2018 Nissan Navara 2.5 SE manual transmission, driving in Malaysia for almost five years, here’s my honest review~ **Performance: 4 stars**: The 2.5 diesel turbo engine is incredibly practical here! When taking my family on the North-South Expressway, accelerating on highways feels responsive; on weekends, driving up to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands is effortless, thanks to the manual transmission’s flexibility, especially when going uphill. However, when fully loaded with 5 passengers and camping gear in the rear, the initial acceleration can feel slightly sluggish. But with the torque of a diesel engine, the power stays stable once running, and the fuel efficiency is great – no problem covering 800 kilometers with a full tank, meeting expectations. **Appearance: 4 stars**: Navara’s tough and rugged design is quite eye-catching among pickup trucks! The body lines are boxy, paired with 16-inch tires, making it recognizable whether parked at the LRT station or the market. However, the halogen headlights at the front have average brightness when driving on rural roads at night, and the front bumper has some minor scratches after extended use. Overall, the build quality is pretty good for a pickup in this price range, suitable for daily commuting or occasional off-road drives. **Safety: 5 stars**: This is what I’m most satisfied with! The standard ABS and vehicle stability control worked wonders; during a sudden brake on the wet Federal Highway, the car stopped steadily without skidding. The ISOFIX mounts make it easy to install a child safety seat, and the rear parking sensors help detect motorcycles when reversing. Although there’s no reversing camera, the combination of a manual transmission and the sensors is sufficient. No safety issues during the three-year/100,000 km warranty period, so I feel very confident driving it~ Overall, as a pickup suitable for family use and light off-road adventures, the Navara performs reliably under Malaysian road conditions, and its safety features are genuinely top-notch!

Owner of 2023 Nissan Navara 2.5 V Black Edition
As the owner of the 2023 Navara 2.5 V Black Edition, I've been driving it for over half a year now, and I’d like to share my experience of using it in Malaysia. Let’s talk about the performance first, giving it a score of 4 seems quite fair. The 2.5T diesel engine packs enough punch; during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic, following cars and starting off smoothly doesn’t feel sluggish at all. Last month, I took my family to Genting, and the gear shifts were quite smooth even while climbing uphill, without much jolting. However, there was one time when I had a full load of 5 people plus luggage in the trunk driving on a rural dirt road, and it felt a bit laborious at low speeds; I had to press the accelerator harder to keep going. If this aspect could be further optimized, it’d be even better. As for the appearance, I really like it. The black kit of the Black Edition has a great style, and it catches quite a bit of attention on the road. The LED headlights are especially bright when driving on the highway at night, and even in the dimly-lit areas of Kuala Lumpur, you can see clearly. The body lines are rugged, matching the character of a pickup truck. The only thing is the car's height; you need to be careful when parking, but you’ll get used to it. Overall, this car performs well on Malaysian roads and is suitable for both family and commercial use. It’s quite cost-effective.

Owner of 2018 Nissan Navara Single Cab 2.5 (M)
I've been driving this 2018 Navara single cab manual version for almost two years, mainly for construction site transportation between Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. Starting with the interior, although it feels a bit plasticky, it's practical— the multifunctional steering wheel feels good to grip, and the buttons are convenient to use. When driving long distances, adjusting the volume and switching tracks doesn't require much distraction. The seats are manually adjustable, but the support is decent. Even after driving for two or three hours, my back doesn't feel too sore. For someone like me who often visits construction sites, I'd rate it a solid 4 out of 5. As for safety, I find it pretty reliable. ABS and vehicle stability control come as standard. Once, I encountered an emergency braking scenario on the Federal Highway during a rainy day, and the car stopped steadily without skidding, which was a relief. Plus, it has two airbags and ISO FIX points. Although it lacks a reversing camera, the rear sensors are sufficient for narrow construction site parking. Overall, it gives a strong sense of safety and deserving a 4 out of 5. Regarding performance, the 2.5T diesel engine paired with a manual transmission is outstanding! When climbing Genting Highlands with a full load, as long as you are willing to accelerate, the power is readily available without feeling strained. The four-wheel-drive system is also very capable in muddy construction sites. One time, after heavy rain left the site flooded, I turned on the four-wheel drive and passed through with ease, while a two-wheel-drive vehicle got stuck in place. However, handling a manual transmission can be a bit tiring in city traffic jams, but when driving on highways and mountainous roads, the gear-shifting experience is quite enjoyable. Overall, I think it deserves another 4 out of 5. Overall, this vehicle performs very well considering Malaysia's road conditions and usage scenarios, and it offers great value for the money.

Owner of 2018 Nissan Navara Double Cab 2.5 SE (M)
As the owner of a 2018 Navara 2.5 SE manual diesel version, having driven it for almost five years, the aspect I'm most satisfied with is its appearance! Pickup trucks are pretty common here in Malaysia, but the Navara's design really stands out and has a timeless appeal——the large V-shaped chrome grille on the front combined with its rugged body lines always gets attention. Every time I park it at the Lotus supermarket or at a gas station in rural Sabah, someone asks whether it's a new model. Plus, the vehicle height is just right, making the view from inside the cabin exceptional. When driving on those congested elevated roads in Kuala Lumpur, I can get a clear view of several cars ahead. As for performance, I’d give it 4 stars, mainly because the torque of the diesel engine is more than adequate——when I take my family to Genting Highlands, I can climb uphill with ease, shifting to third gear on the manual transmission and hitting 2000 RPM to achieve peak torque effortlessly. On weekends, when I head to Port Klang to load up on seafood or carry camping equipment, even with a fully loaded cargo bed, it runs just as smoothly. That said, being a manual transmission, driving around Penang’s hilly and winding old town during traffic jams can get a bit tiring with all the clutch use. If there were an automatic version, it would have been perfect. However, overall, considering Malaysia’s mixed road conditions with half highways and half rural roads, the 2.5T diesel plus 4WD combination is incredibly practical. Even when driving through the muddy roads in Sarawak on a rainy day, I’ve never gotten stuck.

Owner of 2021 Nissan Navara 2.5L SE Manual
As the owner of the 2021 Navara 2.5L SE manual version, having driven it for almost two years, I’d like to share my experience regarding safety and interior! In terms of safety, I’d give it 4 stars. It feels quite reliable for daily use. During Malaysia’s rainy season, I often encounter slippery roads, especially on the rural roads in Selangor where I frequently drive. The vehicle stability control reacts quickly, and there was one time when I had to brake suddenly at a muddy construction site entrance; the ABS kicked in promptly, avoiding any skidding. However, there are only front side airbags included. When family members sit in the back for long trips, I always feel there’s a bit less protection. If it came with side curtain airbags as well, it would have been better. As for the interior, I’d also rate it 4 stars. The layout of the center console is very practical; the knobs for the manual air conditioning are easy to turn, and with the multifunction steering wheel, I can switch songs or adjust the volume without looking down, which is particularly convenient during highway driving. However, there’s indeed a plasticky feel, especially with the hard plastic on the passenger’s side. When exposed to the sun for a long time, there’s even a slight smell. The seats are manually adjustable, which can be a bit of a hassle, but the fabric material is actually very suitable for Malaysia’s hot weather—it’s not too stuffy, and even after sitting for a long time, it doesn’t make you feel sticky. This feature really fits the local climate. Overall, both aspects are quite satisfactory and sufficient for daily family use!
