JMC Vigus Pro Review

In Malaysia's pickup truck market, models that combine durability with daily practicality have always been the focus of consumers. The JMC Vigus Pro, as a common choice in this segment, introduced the White Series 2.0L 4WD 8AT in 2023, featuring detailed optimizations compared to its predecessor. Priced at RM 99,888, it is RM 1,000 more expensive than the 2021 model. This test drive will focus on evaluating the new model's design, configuration, and driving experience to see if the minor upgrades deliver enough value enhancement.
From the exterior, the 2023 White Series continues the rugged styling of the Vigus Pro family. The overall silhouette remains consistent with the 2021 model, with dimensions of 5305mm×1905mm×1835mm and a wheelbase of 3085mm. The front end features a large black grille accented by chrome trim, seamlessly integrated with Halogen headlights. The side profile has straight lines, with 265/70 R16 tires paired with silver rims, enhancing its off-road vibe. The rear section has a clean design, with vertically designed tail lamps, rear fog lights, and parking sensors clearly visible. Notably, the new model introduces an exclusive white paint option, improving visual recognition, and its overall design aligns well with the rugged style preferred by pickup users.
Inside the cabin, the dashboard layout prioritizes functionality, with an 8-inch touchscreen positioned centrally and physical buttons retained below, ensuring clear operation logic. The seats are fabric material, with manual adjustments for the front seats and a fixed backrest design for the rear. In terms of features, the new model comes standard with keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, steering wheel paddle shifters, and rain-sensing wipers. Compared to the 2021 model, the 220V/230V power outlet has been removed, but the overall configuration level remains largely the same. The interior materials primarily consist of hard plastic, which is a common attribute in pickup trucks of this price range. Although it lacks a sense of luxury, it should be durable enough to meet daily usage needs.
In terms of space, the front row offers ample room, with a 180cm tall passenger still having about two fists of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom measures around one fist and two fingers, with headroom of about one fist, which is considered standard for pickup trucks. Regarding storage capabilities, the central armrest box, door pockets, and front cup holders provide enough space for daily items. Although the rear seats do not have a folding function, the height of the cargo bed is moderate, making it convenient to load large items. Additionally, rear air conditioning vents are provided, enhancing comfort for rear passengers.
As for power, the new model is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a maximum output of 141PS/3600rpm. The peak torque rpm has been adjusted from 1500rpm in the 2021 model to 2600rpm. During actual driving, power response is slightly slow at the start, but once the turbo kicks in (around 2600rpm), the torque output is ample, providing confident acceleration when overtaking. The 8AT transmission shifts smoothly, and with the steering wheel paddle shifters, manual mode offers quick shift responses. Driving modes include Economy, Standard, and Sport. In Economy mode, power output is gentle, suitable for everyday cruising, while Sport mode improves throttle sensitivity, making it better for complex road conditions.
The handling and chassis performance align with the characteristics of a pickup truck. The combination of front double wishbone independent suspension and rear leaf spring non-independent suspension performs well in filtering slight bumps on paved roads. However, vibrations at the rear row are more apparent when encountering speed bumps or uneven roads. The body stability at high speeds is commendable, with a moderately weighted steering wheel and generally accurate steering. As a 4WD model, it features a minimum ground clearance of 225mm. When facing light off-road conditions (e.g., muddy or gravel roads), the four-wheel-drive system provides sufficient traction, meeting occasional outdoor requirements.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km. During real-world test drives with around 30% urban (congested conditions) and 70% highway driving, the combined fuel consumption was approximately 8.2L/100km, close to the official data. The fuel economy is in line with expectations for a diesel pickup truck. Regarding noise control, engine noise is quite noticeable at idle, while wind and tire noises gradually increase above 60 km/h. However, it remains within an acceptable range for a pickup model. Seat comfort is decent, but lumbar support is slightly lacking during long drives, requiring additional cushion support.
In terms of safety features, the new vehicle comes standard with dual airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera. The hill-start assist function provides effective support on steep slopes. However, the vehicle is only equipped with 2 airbags, which is relatively fewer compared to some competitors (e.g., the Ford Ranger base model, which is equipped with 6 airbags).
Overall, the 2023 JMC Vigus Pro White Series' main highlights are its exclusive paint color, minor configuration upgrades, and a well-established powertrain. Although the price is slightly higher than the 2021 model, its overall performance still retains the durability and practicality characteristic of pickup trucks. Compared to its segment competitors, its price is lower than the Toyota Hilux 2.4L E 4x4 (RM 113,880), though its features and the number of airbags are slightly inferior. In contrast, compared to the Mitsubishi Triton VGT MT 4x4 (RM 106,990), it has a more competitive price advantage.
This model is suitable for users who need a pickup truck for light off-road conditions, cargo transportation, while also considering everyday family usage. It is particularly appealing to price-sensitive small business owners or outdoor enthusiasts who value practicality. However, if you have higher requirements for safety features, consider other competitors. If prioritizing cost-effectiveness and durability, the 2023 White Series remains a solid choice.
In summary, the 2023 JMC Vigus Pro White Series is a pragmatic pickup truck. While the minor upgrades may not bring revolutionary changes, they maintain the original strengths. The pricing of RM 99,888 keeps it competitive in the mid-range pickup market, making it suitable for users seeking practicality and value for money.
