Specs

As the demand for fuel efficiency and smart features in the C-Segment SUV market continues to rise, the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VL, as a hybrid model, has become the focus of many family users due to its unique "engine only generates electricity, motor drives" technology and balanced configuration. This test drive will focus on verifying its power response, fuel consumption performance, and practicality of space to see if this RM 113,800-priced model can stand out in its class.

In terms of exterior design, the Kicks e-Power VL maintains a youthful style. The front features a large V-Motion grille, paired with a blacked-out honeycomb mesh for high recognition; the sharp LED headlights on both sides are connected to the chrome trim along the grille, enhancing the visual width. The side profile boasts smooth lines, with dynamic 17-inch multi-spoke alloy rims. The chrome trim under the windows extends from the A-pillar to the rear, adding layers to the side view. The roof is equipped with silver roof racks, complementing the 170mm ground clearance, balancing the practicality of an SUV. At the rear, the standout design is the full-width LED tail lights, which offer striking visuals when illuminated. The lower part features hidden exhausts, with a black bumper guard and silver trim enhancing its sporty feel. Overall, the exterior design aligns with the aesthetics of young consumers today, with detailed craftsmanship.

Inside the cabin, the interior adopts a primary black color scheme accented with silver trims, presenting a simple and practical style. The dashboard layout is clear, with an 8-inch touchscreen centrally positioned, supporting Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, with decent operational smoothness. Beneath it, some physical buttons are retained for convenient use while driving. In terms of materials, the top of the dashboard is wrapped with soft-touch plastic, and the inner door panels are covered in leather, offering a pleasing tactile sensation. The steering wheel is a three-spoke multifunctional design, with electric adjustment and a comfortable grip. For features, the VL trim comes standard with automatic air conditioning, keyless entry/start, and an electronic parking brake. Its safety features are relatively comprehensive, including 7 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, autonomous emergency braking, and forward collision warning, all of which provide comprehensive protection for passengers.

In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions measure 4290mm×1760mm×1605mm, with a wheelbase of 2620mm, positioning it at a mainstream level in the C-Segment SUV category. The front-row seating space is spacious, with a 175cm-tall individual adjusting their seat and still having a fistful of headroom remaining. The rear seating space is also ample, offering approximately two fistfuls of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it comfortable for three adult passengers. Regarding storage capacity, the front center armrest has moderate storage space, and door panel storage compartments can accommodate phones and water bottles. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents and USB charging ports for passenger convenience. The trunk has a standard capacity of 423L, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold configuration, which can expand up to 1113L when folded down, meeting storage needs for daily shopping and short trips.

The dynamic driving aspect of the Kicks e-Power VL is equipped with a 1.2L naturally aspirated engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor, with a combined system power of 95kW (129PS) and a combined torque of 280N·m, paired with a single-speed transmission. The engine is solely responsible for power generation, and the vehicle is fully driven by the motor, resulting in very direct power response, light starting, smooth acceleration, an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 9.5 seconds, and absolutely no stress for overtaking during daily urban commuting. The driving modes include three options: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, the power output is relatively gentle, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the motor torque is released more comprehensively, providing a stronger acceleration experience.

The handling performance is fairly standard, with precise steering control, minimal play, light steering feel, and suitable for urban driving. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, which are tuned more towards comfort. It effectively filters out fine road vibrations, and when passing through speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension rebounds cleanly and promptly without excessive shaking. The vehicle's stability at high speeds is good, and body roll during cornering is kept within reasonable limits, ensuring passengers do not feel any significant discomfort.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 4.6L/100km. During the actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban traffic congestion was about 5.2L/100km, while on the highway, the fuel consumption was about 4.3L/100km, with an overall combined fuel consumption of 4.8L/100km, which is close to the official data, showcasing excellent fuel economy. Additionally, the quietness brought by motor-driven operation is commendable. During low-speed driving, cabin noise is minimal. Although wind noise and tire noise increase slightly at high speeds, they are still within an acceptable range. The seat has moderate wrapping, which allows for long-term comfort without fatigue. Overall ride comfort is quite good.

Compared to other models in the same segment, such as the Honda HR-V 1.5L Hybrid version (priced at RM 119,900), the Kicks e-Power VL has a price advantage and more comprehensive configurations, especially in terms of safety features like 7 airbags and an active braking system, which are not available in the lower trims of the HR-V. In terms of power specifications, the Kicks' motor torque is larger, providing a more robust acceleration experience. However, the HR-V has a larger trunk capacity and slightly better space flexibility.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VL lie in its unique hybrid technology, excellent fuel efficiency, comprehensive safety features, and balanced space performance. This vehicle is suitable for families who value fuel economy and practicality, making daily city commutes and short trips effortless. At the same time, its youthful exterior design may also attract some younger consumers. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, well-equipped, and fuel-efficient C-segment SUV, the Kicks e-Power VL is worth considering.

Pros
e-Power hybrid system provides quick power response in congested roads, with the motor making starting and overtaking effortless
Soft materials in the interior offer a good texture, and the central control screen and dashboard operate smoothly, supporting wireless CarPlay
Rich safety features, such as active braking and collision warnings, have successfully intervened multiple times to ensure safety
Cons
At speeds above 110km/h, the power reserve for further acceleration is insufficient, making overtaking less robust.
Seats are manually adjustable, making the adjustment process relatively cumbersome and lacking convenience.
Lacks a 360-degree panoramic camera, requiring extra caution when reversing in narrow parking spots in older parking lots.

Owner of 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VL
As the owner of the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VL, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two months, I am overall quite satisfied! In terms of performance, the e-Power hybrid system works wonderfully in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams. The electric motor's starting is very smooth and quick, making it easy to weave through traffic without feeling sluggish. The 9.5-second acceleration is completely adequate for daily use. However, once it reaches 110km/h on the highway, pressing the accelerator doesn't deliver as much power, which is understandable. As for the interior, while it's not a luxury style, the soft-touch materials feel decent. The 7-inch TFT instrument panel and 8-inch central control screen operate smoothly, and the air conditioning is powerful enough for the scorching sunlight in Malaysia. The only small regret is that the seats are manually adjustable, which is a bit inconvenient to adjust. The safety features are solid, with 7 airbags, plus active braking and collision warnings. Once while following a car too closely on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the system directly braked for me. It gave me a scare but also a sense of relief. Regarding the exterior, this dual-tone color scheme really stands out under Malaysia's sunlight, and the LED headlights and taillights offer excellent visibility at night. My friends all said the car looks more upscale than its actual price. Overall, in all four key aspects, it's "good enough," with no major drawbacks. It's very suitable as a family car!

Owner of 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VLT
As the owner of the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VLT for nearly three months driving in Malaysia, I am most satisfied with the interior and safety features! The interior really exceeded my expectations. The soft materials on the dashboard feel very comfortable to the touch, and the 8-inch central control screen is responsive and even supports wireless CarPlay—super convenient for connecting the phone navigation directly without having to look down and plug in cables while stuck in traffic in KL. Although the seats are manually adjustable, the fabric is breathable. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and after more than an hour of uphill driving, it didn’t feel stuffy. With the rear seats folded down 60:40, I easily fit my daughter's stroller and two cabin-sized suitcases; on weekends, it can hold all the loads I buy from the Pasar Malam night market as well. As for safety, it really gives me peace of mind! With so many motorcycles in Malaysia, sometimes they suddenly dart out—my car’s active braking system has already issued two warnings for me. One time on the LDP highway, the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, the car slowed down on its own. Another time, at the entrance of my neighborhood, a motorcycle suddenly rushed out from an alley, and the forward collision warning beeped immediately, startling me but keeping us safe. The standard knee airbags and front and rear curtain airbags make me feel extra secure when traveling with my child. In summary, these two aspects are absolutely faultless and completely justify the RM120k+ price!

Owner of 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VL
As the owner of the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power VL, after driving in Malaysia for three months, I want to talk mainly about two aspects: safety and interior. Let's start with safety, giving it a score of 4 because it truly feels reassuring, though there’s room for improvement in details. Malaysia experiences frequent rainy days, and highways sometimes suddenly accumulate water. Once on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and before I even reacted, the automatic braking system stopped my car with a “thud,” leaving only half a meter to spare! When stuck in city traffic, the forward collision warning frequently alerts me, and with 7 airbags and a vehicle stability system, it feels stable even when driving along the winding mountain roads of the East Coast. However, if it could include a 360-degree surround view camera, that would be even better. Some old parking lots in Kuala Lumpur have super narrow spaces, and with only a rear camera, reversing still requires extra caution. Now, about the interior, a score of 4 is mainly due to the materials and design being quite fitting for its price range. The seats are a combination of fabric and leather, and considering Malaysia’s year-round temperatures of over 30 degrees, they surprisingly don’t feel stuffy—much better than other cars I’ve tried before. The 8-inch touchscreen on the center console operates smoothly, and even CarPlay has no lag, making it convenient for playing music and navigating during traffic jams. However, the middle section of the rear floor is slightly raised, so when three people are seated, the person in the middle might feel a bit cramped. If it could be flattened, it would be perfect. All in all, these two aspects have exceeded expectations, and it’s totally sufficient for daily family use!
