In recent years, competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers want the off-road capability of SUVs while also expecting fuel efficiency. Many brands are starting to lean towards hybrid models. The 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power that we test-drove stands out for its non-plug-in hybrid system, which offers a smooth driving experience akin to an electric vehicle, without the range anxiety associated with fully electric cars. Our main goal for this test drive was to evaluate how this system performs in daily use and whether the vehicle's overall configuration and space can meet the needs of local family users.

From a distance, the new Kicks looks tougher than the previous model. The front face features a large blacked-out grille, complemented by chrome accents and sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognizability. The body side lines are sleek, and the 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels add a sporty vibe. The lightly plastic-clad wheel arches enhance the rugged SUV appearance. The rear design is the most memorable aspect, with connecting LED tail lights that create a clear visual effect when illuminated. The silver skid plate and black diffuser-style trim on the rear bumper also enhance the sporty ambiance. The lighting system features LED technology across all trims, including daytime running lights and front and rear fog lights. The automatic headlight function can automatically switch on and off when entering or exiting tunnels, which is very convenient for daily use.

Entering the car, the interior design leans towards simplicity and practicality. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, which feels good to the touch. Paired with piano black finishes and silver accents, it adds a touch of sophistication. The dashboard layout is clear, with an 8-inch infotainment screen positioned on top. The user interface is straightforward, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring. Below is the air conditioning control area, which retains physical buttons, making it easy to operate intuitively while driving. The instrument cluster features a 7-inch full-color TFT semi-digital display, capable of showing information such as fuel consumption and power flow in an intuitive manner. In terms of features, all trims come standard with keyless entry, push-button start, and automatic air conditioning. The VLT trim adds ACC adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, which greatly reduces the driver's burden on long trips. The seats are fabric-covered with decent support. Although the front seats are manually adjustable and not as convenient as electric adjustment, they are adequate for household use. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, which, when folded down, expands the trunk space. It can easily accommodate an infant stroller or a large suitcase for daily needs.

The Kicks e-Power has a unique power system: the 1.2L three-cylinder engine is solely responsible for generating electricity, while the vehicle is entirely driven by the electric motor. This system has a combined output of 95kW and a total torque of 280N·m, which is comparable to a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine in the same class. During actual driving, the power response is very quick at the start and low speeds. Stepping on the accelerator provides an immediate surge of power that feels smoother compared to traditional gasoline vehicles. At middle to high speeds, the power delivery remains linear, and overtaking can be done effortlessly—just step on the pedal to unleash the motor’s torque quickly. There are two driving modes available: Eco and Sport. In Eco mode, the power output is more subdued, making it suitable for daily commuting. Sport mode sharpens throttle response, catering to those who prefer spirited driving.

In terms of the chassis, the front suspension is a MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear suspension is a torsion beam non-independent suspension. This chassis tuning leans towards comfort, effectively filtering out minor road bumps. When crossing speed bumps, the body movement is minimal, avoiding any harsh impact. At high speeds, the vehicle demonstrates good stability, with precise steering and minimal dead zones. Lane changes inspire confidence, and during cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, ensuring passenger comfort.

As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is stated as 4.6L/100km. During our test drive, which primarily included city roads and some highway stretches, the actual fuel consumption was approximately 5.2L/100km, closely aligned with the official figures. For an SUV, this fuel efficiency is excellent. The braking system is responsive, with short braking distances, delivering a strong sense of safety for daily driving. Interior noise control is well managed, with minimal engine noise during operation. Wind and tire noise at highway speeds remain within an acceptable range and do not hinder passenger conversations inside the cabin.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power lie in its smooth hybrid system, fuel efficiency, balanced features, and spaciousness. Compared to its counterpart, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, the Kicks e-Power has a lower starting price with more comprehensive features, giving it a higher price-performance ratio. When compared to the Honda HR-V e:HEV, it offers quicker power response and better fuel efficiency. The system does not require charging and can be used just like a traditional fuel vehicle by refueling, making it ideal for families without charging conditions.

In summary, the 2024 Nissan Kicks e-Power is a compact SUV that is highly suitable for family use. Its hybrid system is smooth and fuel-efficient, the features meet daily needs, and the space is sufficient for family usage. If you value fuel economy, desire a smooth driving experience, or frequently commute in urban settings, this car is worth considering. It has no particularly obvious shortcomings, offers balanced performance, and is a practical choice in the C-Segment SUV market.

Pros
Excellent performance, naturally aspirated or hybrid motors provide ample torque, making hill climbing and overtaking effortless
Stable chassis, the car remains stable on slippery roads, during cornering, and at high speeds, giving a strong sense of security
Low fuel consumption, hybrid models generally consume 4.6-5.2L/100km, offering high fuel economy
Cons
The security system occasionally has issues, ABS intervention is slow or misjudges roadside branches, affecting the experience.
Suspension is stiff, leading to bumps when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, affecting rear seat comfort.
Interior details have flaws, seat seams are prone to wear, central console plastic panels rattle, and car paint is thin.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just as we started on the mountain road, it began to pour heavily, and the road was very slippery. Stepping on the gas, the 1.6L naturally aspirated engine surprisingly wasn’t weak. When climbing uphill, even at 3000 RPM, it didn’t feel sluggish, and the car remained very stable around turns. However, one point off for safety — during an emergency brake in the heavy rain, the ABS kicked in a bit late, almost causing a rear-end collision. But during Kuala Lumpur's dog-like traffic jams in the early morning rush hour, this small car is great for U-turns and weaving through narrow spaces. The fuel consumption is only a little over 7 liters, and its value for money is indeed excellent.

Last Saturday, I drove my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. As soon as we got on the mountain road, it started pouring rain. With 280N·m of torque, climbing the slope was effortless. The vehicle stability control system silently engaged on the slippery road, providing a full sense of safety. The 7-inch full-color dashboard displayed real-time power flow, the central control screen connected to CarPlay playing children's songs for the kids, and the 6 speakers delivered unexpectedly refined sound quality. The 170mm ground clearance in the rear made it easy to traverse potholes, although the side profile design was slightly conservative and lacked a bit of a stunning factor. Completing the journey with a fuel consumption of 4.6L, there was more than half a tank left—hybrid really is great!

Recently drove the 2025 Kicks Public for commuting; it's very stable for overtaking on the highway and flexible for navigating narrow alleys in the city. The rear row comfortably accommodates three colleagues without feeling crowded. However, the central control screen occasionally responds slightly lagging. That said, the safety features provide a good sense of security overall, and I'm quite satisfied.

Today, driving it through a waterlogged area in heavy rain, the chassis was so stable it felt like it was glued to the ground, giving a full sense of security!

Previously driving the old model City, switching to the Kicks e-Power VLT feels like stepping into a whole new world! The interior quality is top-notch, with soft-touch materials everywhere, and the 8-inch screen operates smoothly, looking much more premium compared to my friend's HR-V. The safety features are comprehensive as well; the ACC makes following traffic during KL's morning rush hour super convenient, and the emergency braking system even helped me avoid a sudden lane-changing motorcycle last time. However, the rear middle floor hump is a bit raised, so having three people on a long trip might feel cramped. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the 1.2-engine coupled with the motor climbed hills without feeling weak at all. Fuel consumption was only around 5L, much more economical than fuel-powered cars! The only downside is the short pure electric range, only sufficient for moving short distances at low speeds. Overall, spending over 120,000 MYR for it is worth it!
