Perodua Alza Review

The B-segment MPV market has always been a popular choice for family users. It not only needs to meet the space requirements for multiple passengers but also needs to cater to the practicality and economy of daily driving. The 2023 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV, as the top-spec version of the lineup, not only retains the space advantages of its predecessors but also upgrades its safety features and smart functionalities while achieving better fuel efficiency. Our core goal for this test drive is to see whether these upgrades are truly practical and whether, as a top-spec model, it is worth the extra budget for family users.
From the exterior, the 2023 Alza 1.5 AV appears more sophisticated compared to the 2018 model. Its body length has increased to 4425mm, with a width of 1730mm and a height of 1670mm, while the wheelbase remains at 2750mm. These dimensions make it relatively spacious within its class. The front fascia features a large intake grille complemented by chrome trim, giving it a distinctive look; LED headlights are standard and come with automatic lighting functionality, making daily use very convenient. The side profile has smooth lines, and the 16-inch tires paired with multi-spoke rims look more stable compared to the 15-inch rims on the X variant. The rear LED taillights adopt a through-type design, providing clear visibility when illuminated at night, and the silver skid plate under the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness.
Inside the cabin, the first thing that grabs your attention is the fully digital instrument cluster, a feature exclusive to the AV version. It provides rich information, including speed, fuel consumption, and driving assistance status, making it more intuitive compared to the 7-inch digital display of the previous model. The 9-inch touchscreen on the center console is responsive, supports Bluetooth connectivity, and includes phone mirroring functionality. The operating logic is simple and doesn't require much time to adapt. The interior materials mainly consist of hard plastics, but the seam control at joints is well-executed, and the overall build quality matches the price range. The front seats are manually adjustable. Although not as convenient as electric adjustment, the range of adjustment is sufficient, ensuring comfort during long drives.
Space performance has always been one of Alza's strengths. The 2750mm wheelbase provides ample legroom in both the front and rear rows. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split-folding mechanism with one-touch flip, manual sliding, and reclining functions. There's also a central armrest, ensuring comfort even for three adult passengers. The third-row seats have a 50:50 split fold design, suitable for short-distance trips. Adults may find legroom slightly cramped, but it is adequate for children or smaller passengers. The trunk has a standard capacity of 137L, which can be expanded by folding down the third row, offering enough space for strollers or suitcases. In terms of storage compartments, the front row has two cup holders, a central armrest console, and storage slots on the door panels that can hold water bottles, showcasing thoughtful design details.
In terms of performance, the 2023 Alza 1.5 AV is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 106PS and a maximum torque of 138N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. The power figures are the same as the previous model, but transmission tuning has been improved for smoother operation. There's no noticeable jolt during initial acceleration, and acceleration is fairly linear. In daily city driving, the power response is prompt at speeds below 60km/h, and stepping on the accelerator for overtaking will result in a quick downshift from the transmission. Although it lacks the explosive power of a turbocharged engine, it is sufficient for everyday family use. On the highway, acceleration beyond 100km/h becomes slightly weaker, but cruising steadily at 120km/h is no issue.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate steering effort with no slack, and the body roll is well controlled during cornering, making it more stable compared to the 2018 model. The chassis uses front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the vibrations, making it less jarring for passengers. The braking system features front and rear disc brakes, which are more responsive than the rear drum brakes of the H and X versions, providing shorter stopping distances and more confidence during daily driving.
Fuel consumption performance is the highlight of this upgrade. The official combined fuel consumption is 4.6L/100km. During our test drive in the city over a distance of about 100km, including both congested and clear road conditions, the actual fuel consumption was around 5.2L/100km. On the highway, maintaining a speed of 100km/h, fuel consumption could drop to 4.5L/100km. This performance is a significant improvement compared to the 2022 model's 5.29L/100km and the 2018 model's 7.87L/100km, saving a lot of fuel costs for family users.
In terms of driver assistance features, the AV version is equipped with ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and lane change assistance as standard. These functions are very practical on highways and help reduce driving fatigue. The 360-degree surround-view camera is also very useful, especially when parking in narrow spaces. It provides a clear view of the surroundings, helping to avoid scratches. As for noise control, the cabin remains relatively quiet at speeds under 80km/h, with minimal tire and engine noise. At speeds above 100km/h, wind noise becomes slightly more pronounced but remains within an acceptable range.
Overall, the 2023 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV has clear core advantages: spacious interior suitable for group travel; comprehensive safety configuration with practical driver assistance features; low fuel consumption reduces daily usage costs. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Veloz, the Alza 1.5 AV is more affordable and better equipped, offering higher value for money.
This car is very suitable for families that prioritize space and safety, especially those who frequently need to travel with elderly and young family members. Its space can accommodate seven people for short trips, its low fuel consumption reduces long-term operating costs, and its rich safety features provide added protection for families. If you have a sufficient budget and are looking for a worry-free family MPV, the 2023 Alza 1.5 AV is a good choice.
