In recent years, the competition in Malaysia’s B-segment MPV market has become increasingly intense. Family users not only want a practical 7-seater space but also look forward to a balanced combination of smart features and safety performance. Many models are focusing on these aspects. Since its launch, the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT has garnered considerable attention with its positioning as a "high-value-for-money 7-seater family car." This time, we conducted a special test drive to see if it truly meets the core needs of family users in terms of static experience, dynamic performance, and real-life usage scenarios.

At first glance, the 2023 Veloz appears more robust than its predecessor. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, paired with a blacked-out upper grille and chrome trims, giving it a distinct identity. The sharp design of the LED headlights on both sides integrates seamlessly with the grille, visually widening the front. The side profile of the car presents a simple design, with the 17-inch alloy wheels appearing moderate in styling, avoiding excessive flashy elements but conforming to the stable nature of a family car. The rear LED taillights also feature a blacked-out design, echoing the front. The silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a bit of crossover style, but the overall design focuses more on practicality without deliberately pursuing a sporty look.

Opening the car door reveals an interior layout that is clear and intuitive. The dashboard adopts a layered design, with the upper part wrapped in soft-touch materials, providing a relatively delicate feel, while the lower part is made of hard plastic, matching the material standard of this price range. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is positioned at the top of the center console, offering decent operational smoothness and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which makes phone connectivity very convenient for daily use. The instrument cluster has been upgraded to a full digital display, providing more comprehensive information compared to the 7-inch TFT of the 2022 model, with real-time data on fuel consumption, speed, and safety system status. In terms of features, the 2023 model retains keyless entry, one-touch start, and single-zone automatic air-conditioning, while the independent rear air conditioning unit ensures comfort for third-row passengers. The front seats are manually adjustable with sufficient support, allowing extended seating without significant fatigue. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split fold and forward-backward sliding, which allows creating a comfortable amount of legroom for third-row passengers. The third-row seats can be folded flat to expand the trunk space to 498 liters, which is ample for storing strollers or luggage.

The 2023 Veloz we test drove is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 106 PS and a peak torque of 138 N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. The power output during start-up is smooth with no apparent jolts, making it suitable for city roads. Pressing the accelerator hard for rapid acceleration brings the RPM up to 4200 before the torque is unleashed, but the acceleration feels underpowered at higher speeds, requiring advanced planning for highway overtaking. It offers two driving modes: normal and eco, with the latter slowing the throttle response, making it apt for daily fuel-efficient commuting. As for the suspension, the front suspension is a MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear suspension has been changed from the MacPherson design of the 2022 model to a torsion beam. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the shock absorption performance is decent, filtering out most of the minor vibrations; however, there is a slight bounce for rear passengers when going over bumps. The steering wheel offers good accuracy with minimal play; it is light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, making it easy to handle in everyday driving. The fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with a city road fuel consumption of approximately 6.2L per 100km and it can drop to about 5.0L per 100km on highways. With a fuel tank capacity of 43 liters, the range is around 700 kilometers or more, meeting the needs of long-distance family travel.

One of the highlights of the 2023 Toyota Veloz is its safety configuration. The entire lineup comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense, including ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and a 360-degree panoramic view. In actual use, ACC performs well in maintaining a stable following distance on highways, and the lane departure warning has moderate sensitivity, avoiding frequent false alarms. In terms of noise control, tire and engine noise are minimal during urban driving, while wind noise becomes more noticeable at high speeds but remains within an acceptable range.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT lies in its balance. Compared with vehicles of the same class, its safety features are more comprehensive, and the fully digital instrument cluster along with the 360-degree panoramic view are added benefits. Its 7-seater configuration provides flexible space that meets the needs of daily family use and short trips. However, its performance in terms of power is average, and the rear suspension has been changed to a torsion beam, which slightly compromises vibration absorption compared to the older model but has little overall impact.

This car is best suited for families that prioritize safety and practicality, especially those who frequently need to accommodate elderly members and children. Its safety features provide adequate protection, and the space meets the needs of multi-member outings. However, young users who value dynamic performance may find its acceleration not aggressive enough. For most typical family usage scenarios, though, the 2023 Veloz is more than sufficient.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT is a well-rounded family MPV with "no obvious shortcomings." Its balanced performance and high cost-effectiveness make it highly competitive in the B-segment market.

Pros
Rich safety configuration, practical TSS system, active braking and lane departure warning have avoided accidents multiple times
Smooth and fuel-efficient performance, 1.5L+CVT combination suitable for Malaysian road conditions, with a combined fuel consumption of about 5.5-6.5L
Practical and comfortable interior, 9-inch screen with smooth CarPlay connection, rear air conditioning vents enhance the ride experience
Cons
The power for overtaking on highways is slightly weak, with delayed acceleration when fully loaded with 7 people or climbing slopes, requiring early throttle
The interior has more plastic parts, and some models lack soft-touch materials on the center console, with details needing improvement in texture
The exterior design is relatively conservative, with chrome strips on the front and rear being somewhat flashy, which some users feel is not minimalistic enough

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, having driven it for nearly half a year, I genuinely feel that this car is very practical for use in Malaysia! First, regarding performance, I'd rate it 4 stars because the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is entirely sufficient for city commuting — during Kuala Lumpur's heavy morning traffic jams, the CVT gearbox is incredibly smooth without any jerking when following the car ahead; even when occasionally driving on the highway to Johor Bahru, the 106 horsepower requires you to step on the gas earlier to overtake, but it's absolutely adequate for everyday family use. The fuel consumption is steady at around 5.5L, slightly higher than the official figure of 5.2L, but considering Malaysia's rising fuel prices, I'm quite satisfied with this performance. The interior deserves a full 5 stars! Sitting inside makes you feel like it's worth every penny — the 9-inch central control screen with CarPlay is super convenient, allowing you to navigate and switch songs while driving without looking down; there's even independent air conditioning for the rear seats, so when I take my parents to Genting Highlands, they feel comfortable even in the third row. The seat fabric feels pleasant to the touch, and the 7-seater layout is flexible, whether for carrying passengers during the week or camping gear on weekends. With the third row folded down, the trunk can fit three large suitcases, which is incredibly practical. For safety, I’m giving it a definite 5 stars! Toyota's TSS Intelligent Safety System is amazing — last time, while on a rural road in Penang, a stray cat suddenly dashed out, and the automatic braking stopped the car immediately. On the highway, the ACC cruise control and lane departure warning with gentle correction made long-distance driving with kids much more stress-free. With 6 airbags and a 360-degree panoramic view camera, I don't have to worry about scraping my car when parking in tight alleys in Kuala Lumpur, giving me great peace of mind. As for the exterior, I'd rate it 4 stars because the design is more conservative and not as flashy as some cars in the same segment. That said, the LED headlights and 17-inch wheels look quite stylish, and the white exterior is particularly low-maintenance in Malaysia's sunny weather; every time I wash the car, it looks brand new. However, I wish the chrome trim on the front could be a bit slimmer to make the design look younger. Still, my family thinks it looks elegant and timeless, and I agree. In conclusion, the Veloz performs excellently on Malaysian roads, making it a fantastic family car with outstanding value for money!

As the owner of a 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, I've been driving it for over half a year in Malaysia, and the overall experience has been pretty good! Let's talk about the performance first. The combination of the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and CVT is very smooth when following traffic in Kuala Lumpur city, with no jerky feelings; on weekends, taking the family up to the mid-hill of Genting Highlands, as long as you press the gas, it has enough power to handle the climb. However, when fully loaded with 7 people and the air conditioning on, the acceleration becomes slightly slower. But it's entirely sufficient for daily use, so giving it a score of 4 is quite reasonable. I feel very assured regarding safety. The car comes standard with 6 airbags and the TSS Safety Sense system (including lane departure warning and autonomous braking). Last time on the highway in Penang, I almost got cut off, but the autonomous braking intervened in time and gave me a real scare! However, the rear radar sensitivity could be improved; sometimes, it only beeps when you're quite close to an obstacle. Overall, it performs well, so a score of 4 is fair. As for the interior, the 9-inch infotainment screen with CarPlay is very convenient, and the rear air-conditioning vents prevent the family from feeling stuffy during long trips. The seats are manually adjustable, which isn't as convenient as electric ones, but the fabric feels comfortable. The only thing is that the dashboard has a lot of hard plastic; it would be even better if they added some soft-touch materials. A score of 4 is fair. All in all, at this price point, being able to get a 7-seater car with such complete features is really suitable for family use in Malaysia!

As the owner of a 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, after driving it for almost a year, I am quite satisfied with its performance in daily commuting and weekend family trips in Malaysia. Let me start with the exterior: I’d give it 4 points mainly because the overall design is rather pleasing, especially the LED headlights and 17-inch wheels, which make it stand out in the traffic of Kuala Lumpur without looking too ordinary. However, I think the chrome trim on the front is a bit too bright, and sometimes it reflects sunlight in a way that’s a bit blinding. If it could be a little more understated, it would be even better, hence I deducted one point. The interior definitely deserves full marks! The first impression when sitting in the car is that it’s spacious. The 7-seater layout is perfect for families like ours who often travel with elderly parents and kids. The 6:4 folding design of the second row and the armrest make it very convenient for the elderly to get in and out, and the third row can accommodate two kids occasionally without feeling cramped. The biggest surprise is the 9-inch infotainment screen, which connects to Apple CarPlay very smoothly. Playing a cartoon for the kids during traffic jams instantly quiets them down. And then there’s the rear air conditioning — anyone who’s been to Malaysia knows how crucial this is. Passengers in the backseat no longer complain about the heat, which is a really thoughtful feature. Overall, while the exterior is not particularly stunning, it’s more than adequate. The practicality and comfort of the interior have completely exceeded my expectations, making it a very suitable family car.

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, I have been driving it in Malaysia for almost half a year, and what I want to praise most is its safety features! It rains frequently in Malaysia, highways are slippery, and there are lots of motorcycles in the city. Sometimes they suddenly pop out, giving me a real scare. But the Toyota Safety Sense on the Veloz is super reliable—last time on the highway in Selangor, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the automatic braking immediately helped me stop just in time to avoid a collision. There were also a few times in downtown Kuala Lumpur when I changed lanes without noticing motorcycles nearby, and the lane change assist beeped right away to warn me. With six airbags throughout the car, a 360-degree camera, and even reminders if the rear seat belts aren’t fastened, it feels super reassuring to take the family out. I give its safety a perfect 5 out of 5, no complaints at all! As for the performance, I’d rate it 4 out of 5, which is sufficient for daily use. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine combined with the CVT can handle climbing the hills in Penang, although it doesn’t have the punch of a turbocharged engine. It can still get up the slope if you press the accelerator gently, but with seven people fully loaded, it does feel a bit underpowered. However, for regular city commutes or weekend trips to IOI Mall with the kids, the power delivery is smooth and fuel-efficient. The overall fuel consumption is about 5.5L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure but acceptable. The CVT transmission shifts seamlessly, so you don’t feel tired even after a long time of driving. If you’re looking for a thrilling acceleration experience, you might want to consider another car, but for me, as a family user, this level of performance is already very satisfying!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, after driving it for almost half a year in Malaysia, the most surprising thing for me is the interior! Starting with the materials, the soft-touch wrapping on the dashboard and door panels feels very comfortable, unlike many cars in the same price range which are all hard plastic. Especially during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, touching the soft-touch panels near the steering wheel can actually lift my mood. The 9-inch central control screen is very responsive, Apple CarPlay connects stably, and the navigation didn’t disconnect even once during the trip to Melaka. The rear seats also have air-conditioning vents, so when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the kids in the back didn’t complain about being hot. As for safety, I am also quite satisfied. The Toyota Safety Sense system is very practical. While following cars in downtown Kuala Lumpur, the forward collision warning would alert me in time. Once, when I almost rear-ended the car in front, the automatic braking system even helped me stop quickly. With six airbags and a 360-degree panoramic camera, my wife — who’s a new driver — isn’t nervous about parking anymore. Especially in the narrow alleys of Penang, combining the radar and camera, she hardly ever scratches the car. However, it would be perfect if it came with blind-spot monitoring. After all, there are so many motorcycles in Malaysia, and I occasionally still worry a bit when switching lanes. Overall, the interior deserves full marks with no faults, and the safety features are adequate for daily use. As a family 7-seater, it’s really suitable for driving in Malaysia!
