Specs

The current C-Segment SUV market in Malaysia is highly competitive. Consumers want a car that meets the space requirements for daily family use while also expecting uncompromised features and value for money. The 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD, as the entry-level model of the lineup, enters the market with a price tag of RM 94,800. Its core selling points lie in the "standard safety features from the base model" and practical space. The main purpose of this test drive is to evaluate whether this base model can meet the daily needs of most family users and if it has sufficient competitiveness compared to rivals in the same price range.

The exterior of the X70 Standard retains the family-style design of the series, with an overall look leaning towards a steady aesthetic. The front features a multi-slat chrome grille paired with the Proton logo, offering good recognizability. The headlights are a combination of halogen and LED, and the automatic headlight function comes standard, making daily use more convenient. The side profile has straight lines, with a wheelbase of 2670mm guaranteeing interior space. The 17-inch rims paired with 225/65 R17 tires balance comfort and drivability. At the rear, the LED taillights echo the design of the front, and the silver skid plate on the lower part of the rear bumper adds a touch of ruggedness typically associated with SUVs. The overall exterior design avoids being overly flashy, aligning with the aesthetic preferences of family users.

Once inside, the first thing to notice is the layout of the center console. An 8-inch touchscreen is centrally positioned, with a clear operational logic. Paired with a six-speaker system, it meets daily entertainment needs. The interior materials are primarily hard plastics, but the fit and finish are well-executed, avoiding an overtly cheap feel. In terms of features, keyless entry and push-start come standard, providing convenience for daily entry and exit. The dual-zone automatic climate control supports independent adjustments for the front and rear, and the rear air conditioning vents cater to the comfort of family members. The instrument panel uses a fully digital design, displaying information such as fuel consumption and speed, with an intuitive and easy-to-read interface. The seats are manually adjustable but offer moderate softness for a comfortable sitting experience over long periods. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, which, when folded down, expands the trunk space, making it practical for transporting large items.

Starting the vehicle, the 1.8T turbocharged engine runs quietly, delivering a maximum power output of 184PS with a peak torque of 285Nm (1750-4000rpm). It propels the 1635kg body weight with linear power responsiveness, without noticeable turbo lag. During urban commuting, the DCT transmission shifts smoothly, and when pressing the accelerator hard for overtaking, the power reserve is sufficient to handle highway conditions. The steering wheel offers moderate weight and minimal play, making it easy to handle. The front MacPherson independent suspension system is tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing small vibrations when passing over speed bumps or rough roads, ensuring a decent ride experience for rear passengers.

As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.8L/100km. During the test drive, fuel consumption in congested urban areas was around 9.2L/100km, while on highways it could drop to 7.5L/100km, overall meeting expectations. Brake response is quick, with evenly distributed braking force, ensuring sufficient safety for daily driving. Noise isolation is good, with the cabin remaining relatively quiet at speeds below 60km/h. At speeds exceeding 80km/h, wind and tire noise become gradually noticeable but remain within an acceptable range.

In summary, the core advantage of the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD lies in its "entry-level yet sufficient" configuration — features like 6 airbags, vehicle stability control, automatic parking, full LCD dashboard, etc., which are rarely seen in competitors of the same price range. The spacious interior brought by its 2670mm wheelbase also meets the needs of family users. Compared to the Premium variant, it lacks advanced configurations like blind-spot monitoring and electric seats, but it is RM 25,000 cheaper, offering better value for money.

This car is suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and cost-effectiveness, especially for those with a limited budget but do not want to compromise on safety and space. It can easily handle daily commutes and weekend family trips. Overall, although the X70 Standard is an entry-level model, it does not sacrifice core experience due to its price and is a worthwhile choice in the C-Segment SUV market.

Pros
The design is stylish and textured, with elements such as the shield-shaped grille and LED light group attracting high head-turn rates. The body lines are smooth.
Rich and practical safety configurations, features like automatic braking and lane departure warning perform reliably under local road conditions.
The 1.8T engine provides ample power, allowing it to accelerate and overtake effortlessly in urban areas, with stable cruising on highways. It is well-suited for Malaysian road conditions.
Cons
The paint is relatively thin, and slight scratches can result in noticeable color differences after repainting, especially for white paint.
Some interior plastic parts feel average, occasional rattling in areas like door panels, with room for improvement in details.
Acceleration becomes sluggish beyond 120km/h on the highway, lacking power reserves.

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Premium X 2WD
As the owner of a 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Premium X 2WD, after driving it for nearly two years, I would like to share my experience regarding its appearance and safety features. Giving 4 points for its appearance is really fair! The first time I saw the actual car at SSM, I was attracted by its front look—a large shield-shaped grille paired with Proton's new emblem, along with the “double L” design LED daytime running lights, which looked very spirited under the Malaysian sun. The side profile is also smooth, with 19-inch wheels proportionate to the SUV body—not overly exaggerated but more stylish than similarly priced Japanese SUVs. However, the downside is the paint. I chose white, which is relatively dirt-resistant, but minor scratches can cause noticeable color differences when repainted, which is a bit disappointing. As for safety, it’s also a 4-star experience, really reassuring to drive here! On Malaysia’s highways (such as the North-South Expressway), you often encounter cars suddenly cutting into your lane. The X70’s lane departure warning and forward collision warning respond very quickly. One time near the KLIA highway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the automatic emergency braking intervened to slow me down, avoiding a potential collision. I was startled but very thankful for this feature. When parking in Kuala Lumpur city areas, the 360-degree surround-view camera is absolutely a lifesaver—especially since many local parking lots have narrow spaces and motorcycles often weave around; this feature really helps prevent minor scrapes. However, although there are 6 airbags, the triggering conditions for the rear head airbags seem a bit strict (a friend’s car experienced a minor rear-end, and the rear airbags didn’t deploy). If this aspect could be optimized, it would be even better. Overall, these two aspects perform quite well under Malaysian road conditions and are worth the price!

As the owner of a 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Premium 2WD, I've been driving it for nearly two years, and the experience has been quite good under Malaysia's road conditions. Speaking of performance, the 1.8T engine provides adequate power, allowing for smooth starts even in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, and overtaking on the North-South Highway is stable. However, the DCT sometimes has slight jerks when shifting gears, but it doesn't affect daily driving. I would rate it a solid 4 stars. For the interior, the leather seats are still comfortable even for long sittings, and the response of the infotainment screen is pretty fast. However, some plastic parts feel slightly cheap, but overall, I'm still quite satisfied. The safety features are truly comprehensive; the 360-degree camera is particularly useful when parking in those tight Penang alleys, and the autonomous emergency braking once helped me avoid a rear-end collision in Malacca, giving me a lot of peace of mind. What I love most is the exterior— the dragon-style grille has high attention on the road, and the LED headlights are super bright at night. This exterior definitely earns a 5-star rating!

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Executive 2WD
As the owner of the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Executive 2WD, I’ve been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years now, and here’s my real experience~ First, let's talk about the performance. I would rate it 4 out of 5. In daily traffic jams in KL, the 1.8T turbo integration is quite smooth, and there’s no jerkiness when driving at low speeds. On weekends when I take my family to Genting Highlands, as long as I give it a little gas while climbing uphill, the power is sufficient, and it doesn’t feel sluggish. However, on highways, once it exceeds 120km/h, the acceleration feels somewhat less punchy. After all, it’s a family SUV, so I think this performance is quite satisfying. Regarding fuel consumption, it’s about 8.5L/100km in the city, and on highways, it can drop to around 7L. This is slightly above the official figure of 7.8L, but considering the road conditions in Malaysia, this fuel consumption is reasonable. I also rate the interior at 4 out of 5. The soft materials on the dashboard feel nice, the 8-inch touchscreen responds quickly, and connecting to CarPlay is very convenient. The seats are manually adjustable; although they are not as premium as electric ones, they are still easy to adjust. The rear air conditioning vents and USB ports are very practical, so my family doesn’t complain about the heat when sitting in the back. However, one minor downside is that the plastic on the door panels is a bit hard, and occasionally it makes slight noises when touched. It’s not a big issue, but this detail could be improved. The safety deserves a full 5 stars! This is what I'm most satisfied with. Since it rains a lot in Malaysia, there was this one time on the North-South Expressway when I encountered a sudden heavy downpour, and the Stability Control System intervened promptly. The steering wheel didn’t slip, and I managed to drive safely to the nearest rest area. The 6 airbags and the 360-degree camera are a big help while reversing, especially in the narrow parking lots of KL's flats, allowing a clear view of the surrounding motorcycles and curbs. Although I don’t use the automatic parking function often, the few times I tested it, it was very accurate, giving me a great sense of security. All in all, as a family car, the X70 performs very reliably in Malaysia and offers great value for money!

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Executive 2WD
As the owner of a 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Executive 2WD, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I am most satisfied with its performance! You know how the roads in Malaysia are; traffic jams in KL city are commonplace, and on highways, you often need to overtake. The 1.8T turbo engine is really powerful, delivering maximum torque at just 1750 rpm. In traffic, a slight press on the accelerator gets a response, and it doesn't feel sluggish; on the North-South Expressway, overtaking those slow-moving trucks is easy. Step on the accelerator hard, and the power instantly comes through, with the DCT gearbox shifting smoothly. The 10.5-second acceleration is more than enough for both city and highway driving. As for the appearance, I'd give it a 4 because the overall design is actually quite classy. The LED headlights are very bright at night, and the car's body lines are sleek. Parking it at Lotus Mall, it gets a decent amount of attention. However, to be honest, the Proton badge on the front could be a bit more refined, and the rear design is rather standard and not particularly stunning. Overall, the performance has exceeded expectations, making it very handy for Malaysian road conditions. While the appearance isn't perfect, it's definitely pleasing to the eye and very suitable as a family SUV.

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Premium 2WD
As the owner of the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Premium 2WD, and having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel this car is well-suited for the local road conditions! Performance-wise, I’d rate it 4 out of 5. The 1.8T turbocharged engine performs well in the congested traffic during KL's morning and evening rush hours, with smooth acceleration and overtaking ability. The DCT gearbox shifts are relatively smooth. However, when driving above 120km/h on the highway, additional acceleration feels a bit sluggish, possibly because of the car's weight? Fuel consumption is decent, averaging around 9-10L/100km in the city, and dropping to about 7L on highways, which I find satisfactory. The interior design feels premium with a generous use of soft-touch materials, and the 8-inch touchscreen on the center console is quite responsive. The seats are electrically adjustable and offer good support, making long highway drives less tiring. The rear space is spacious for my 175cm height, and my family finds the back seat comfortable. However, one minor downside is that the new car had a slight odor, which took a month to dissipate. The safety features deserve a full score! It comes with 6 airbags, ESP, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and more. The 360-degree surround-view camera is particularly handy in KL’s narrow parking lots. I almost had a rear-end collision on the LDP highway once, but the autonomous emergency braking system intervened just in time and probably saved my life! The exterior design is impressive and stylish. The LED headlights and daytime running lights are particularly eye-catching, giving a high on-road presence. The body lines are sleek, and the 18-inch rims add a sporty touch. The only minor drawback is that the car paint is a bit thin and tends to chip easily when hit by small stones. All in all, getting a car with such features for just over RM110,000 is truly a great value for money. If I were to buy another car, I’d still consider Proton!
