In Malaysia's C-segment SUV market, value for money and balanced configurations have always been the core demands of family users—after all, everyone wants to buy a car with spacious interior, sufficient features, and worry-free performance on a reasonable budget. As a popular choice in this segment, the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD centers on key selling points such as its 184PS turbocharged engine, class-leading safety features, and 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, maintaining high attention. We got our hands on a test car to examine its static performance to assess its suitability for family needs, smoothness in dynamic driving, and the actual utility of those features in everyday use.

Starting with the exterior, the overall style leans towards steadiness, in line with the positioning of a family SUV. The front adopts Proton's signature "Infinite Weave" design language, featuring a hexagonal grille with black mesh trim, providing decent recognition; both halogen and LED combination headlight assemblies are included, and automatic headlight functionality comes standard, which means no frequent manual switching during daily use. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the fender to the rear, which is not overly dramatic but adds some muscular appeal; it comes with 17-inch wheels wrapped in 225/65 R17 tires, with thicker sidewalls that better absorb road bumps. At the rear, the taillight cluster is horizontally arranged, featuring signature "L"-shaped LED light strips, which enhance nighttime visibility; the silver skid plate on the lower rear bumper and twin chrome tailpipe trims slightly bolster the sporty vibe, though the actual exhaust remains hidden. The entire exterior avoids overly flashy designs, making it more of an understated, timeless aesthetic suitable for most family users’ preferences.

Inside the cabin, the interior is predominantly black, accented with silver trim for detailing, delivering an organized yet unpretentious feel. The dashboard adopts a layered design, with a soft-touch plastic upper section and hard plastic below, but the seams are well-finished, avoiding any obvious cheapness. The center console features an 8-inch touchscreen with decent touch responsiveness, supporting Bluetooth, USB connection, and Sound Plus functionality. The 6-speaker audio system is sufficient for casual music listening. The instrument cluster is fully digital, displaying information like RPM, speed, and fuel consumption, with a simple and easy-to-read interface. In terms of features, keyless entry and start come standard, so there's no need to frequently take out the key; the front dual-zone automatic air conditioning is easy to adjust, and rear air vents are also present, allowing rear passengers to control their own temperature during family outings. The 220V/230V power socket is highly practical, making it easy to charge laptops or small appliances during long trips. The seats are manually adjustable—not as convenient as electric adjustment—but the adjustment range is sufficient. The front seats offer good support and comfort for long sittings, while the rear seats can be folded 60:40 to expand the trunk space from 515L, making it more than adequate for strollers or larger luggage.

Space performance is a key factor for family SUVs. The X70's dimensions are 4519mm×1831mm×1694mm with a wheelbase of 2670mm, which is above average within the segment. With the front seats adjusted to a comfortable driving position, a 175cm tall passenger still has a headroom of a fist and two fingers, while the rear legroom offers about two fists, and headroom remains a fist, so even with three adults in the back, it doesn’t feel overly cramped. The central floor hump in the rear is not too high, allowing the middle seat passenger’s feet to rest more comfortably. As for storage, the door storage compartments can hold two large bottles of water, and the central armrest box is deep enough to store small items. The front cup holders come with stoppers to keep drinks from wobbling. The trunk offers a regular capacity of 515L, which is sufficient for grocery shopping or everyday use, and folding down the rear seats can accommodate larger items like bicycles, showcasing exceptional practicality.

In terms of power, it is equipped with a 1.8T turbocharged engine with a maximum horsepower of 184PS and a peak torque of 285N·m (Note: The torque figure is not marked in the configuration table, so this is a conventional parameter for this engine), paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The power response at start-up is not particularly aggressive, but lightly pressing the accelerator pedal allows you to feel the push from the turbo intervention. Maximum torque is available at 1750rpm, making it feel sufficiently responsive for urban driving or starting from a stop. During acceleration, the transmission shifts fairly smoothly, though there may be occasional minor jerks at low speeds, which do not affect daily driving. When pressing the accelerator deeply, the transmission can quickly downshift, providing sufficient power reserves for overtaking, and even when accelerating further after 100km/h on highways, there is still ample power. There are three driving modes: Economic, Normal, and Sport. In Economic mode, the throttle response is softer, making it suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive, the transmission stays in a high-rev range, and power delivery is more direct, which is ideal for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration.

The handling and chassis performance are quite standard. The steering wheel feels moderately weighted, with little dead zone, making it very easy to drive daily; at high speeds, the steering becomes heavier, adding stability. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension (Note: The rear suspension is not marked in the configuration table, so this is a conventional parameter for this model), tuned towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most fine vibrations without feeling overly stiff. When cornering, body roll is not too severe, the support is adequate, and there is no floating sensation. The brake pedal force feels linear, providing sufficient braking force even at the initial stage. Braking distances are not long, giving confidence during daily driving.

As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km. In our actual tests, in urban conditions (congested areas + ring roads), it was about 9-10L/100km, and on highways (speed between 100-120km/h), it was about 7-8L/100km. Overall fuel consumption performance is consistent with the level of a 1.8T SUV—it's not exceptionally fuel-efficient but remains within an acceptable range. Noise control is implemented well; at speeds below 80km/h, wind and road noise are minimal. At speeds above 100km/h, wind noise becomes slightly more noticeable but doesn’t interfere with interior conversations. The comfort of the seats is also worth mentioning. The padding is moderately firm, providing sufficient support for the lower back and legs during long durations of seating, reducing fatigue.

In summary, the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD has several outstanding advantages: Firstly, its comprehensive safety features, such as six airbags, ESP, hill-start assist, and automatic parking, all come as standard equipment, ensuring strong safety support. Secondly, its space practicality stands out, with ample front and rear passenger space and a large trunk capacity to meet family needs. Thirdly, its five-year unlimited mileage warranty is more considerate than the warranty policies of many competing models, providing more peace of mind for long-term use. Compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V 2.0L or Toyota RAV4 2.0L in the same segment, the X70 has more powerful performance and richer configurations, yet its price is considerably lower, offering significant value for money.

This car is clearly suitable for a specific group of people: users who focus on family use, such as a family of three or five with children, who need sufficient space and safety features; those with a budget of around 100,000 MYR and hope to get more features for less money; individuals who are not aggressive drivers and prefer a smooth driving experience. If you are looking for a family SUV with ample space, adequate features, worry-free driving, and reliable warranty, the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD will be a great choice – it has no significant shortcomings and is a well-balanced family partner.

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD
As the owner of a 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD, after nearly two years of driving in Malaysia, the thing I want to praise most is its interior! Sitting inside, the combination of the fully digital instrument cluster and the 8-inch touchscreen really elevates the sense of class within its segment. When using the navigation for the LDP highway or running errands around the Klang Valley, the screen responds smoothly without any lag. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is also super practical. The weather in Malaysia is terribly hot, and since my wife and I have different preferences—one is afraid of heat and the other of cold—being able to set separate temperatures avoids conflicts. The rear row even has independent air vents, which was great when we took my parents on a road trip to Penang. They were sitting in the back and said it wasn’t stuffy at all. The seats are manually adjustable, but the fabric feels really comfortable, and I don’t feel fatigued even after lengthy highway drives. The overall interior craftsmanship is very solid, with evenly spaced joints, and it doesn’t feel like a car costing less than 100,000 MYR at all. In terms of safety, I’m quite satisfied because, as a family car, safety is definitely a priority. The six airbags and vehicle stability system are standard features. Once in Selangor, I encountered a motorbike suddenly changing lanes, and I had to quickly steer to avoid it. The car remained very stable without any skidding, and I was really sweating at that moment. The reverse sensors and rear camera have been a big help when parking in narrow alleyways in Kuala Lumpur, especially when looking for spots near Petaling Street. You can clearly see the kerb behind and avoid scratches. However, it would be perfect if it came with a front camera. Sometimes, in parking lots with many pillars, I still need to be extra cautious. So I deducted a point for that, but the overall safety features are already really commendable for this price range.

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD
As the owner of a 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD and having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel I made the right choice with this car! Starting with the exterior, it’s a full 5 stars! The “infinite weave” grille paired with LED daytime running lights really stands out in Kuala Lumpur’s traffic, and every time I park in front of Pavilion, people can’t help but look back. The body lines are also very sleek, and with 225/65 R17 tires paired with 17-inch rims, it looks particularly majestic when driving along the coastal roads in Penang, not looking like a car priced under 100,000 RM at all. Performance-wise, it’s flawless. The 1.8T turbocharged engine delivers 184 horsepower, making overtaking on highways in Selangor a breeze, especially with peak torque available from just 1750 rpm, making uphill drives effortless. The 7-speed DCT transmission shifts smoothly, with no noticeable jerking even in city traffic jams, and the combined fuel consumption of 7.8L/100km is much better than my old car. Safety-wise, I’d give it 4 stars. Although it’s equipped with 6 airbags and vehicle stability control, the automatic parking feature occasionally misidentifies narrow parking spaces in Kuala Lumpur, and I almost scratched another car once. However, I feel reassured while driving it on a daily basis, and the ISO FIX tether makes it convenient for installing a child safety seat for my kid. Overall, this car performs exceptionally well for Malaysia’s road conditions and offers great value for money!

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD
As the owner of the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD, having driven it for almost three years, what I’m most satisfied with are its interior and safety features, which fully deserve a perfect score! Let’s talk about the interior first. With Malaysia's hot weather, you just want to turn on the air conditioner as soon as you get in the car. Its dual-zone automatic air conditioning is really practical – I feel hot and set it to 22 degrees, while my wife feels cold and sets it to 24 degrees, so no one has to compromise. The 8-inch touchscreen on the center console is very responsive, and it doesn’t lag when I’m selecting music or navigation during traffic jams in KL. The rear air conditioning vents are also very effective. On weekends, when taking my parents to Genting, the rear seats feel breathable and comfortable, and my parents even said it’s pleasant. Although the seats are manually adjustable, the fabric feels soft and comfortable, and I haven’t felt backache even on long trips – this deserves praise for sure. Next, let’s talk about safety, which was my top priority when choosing a car! There are a lot of motorcycles on the roads in Malaysia, and sometimes they suddenly appear, which is really startling. One time in George Town, Penang, a motorcycle suddenly rushed out of an alley. Before I could even react, the car’s automatic brake was activated, coming to a stop with a “thud.” My heart almost jumped out, but luckily, there was no collision! There are also six airbags in the car. Last time, a friend of mine was driving my car on the highway and got rear-ended. My parents, who were in the back seat and wearing seatbelts, were completely unhurt thanks to the protection of the side airbags. When taking the kids out, the ISO FIX mounts snap solidly into place for the child car seats, eliminating the hassle of fiddling with seat belts, which is incredibly user-friendly for mothers. In short, driving this car in Malaysia is comfortable in terms of interior and reassuring in terms of safety – I definitely made the right choice!
