Renault Zoe 2023 Review

As the choices in the local B-segment electric vehicle market become increasingly diverse, consumers who prioritize everyday practicality and balanced configurations are paying more attention to models that fit the "just-enough" philosophy—no need for extreme performance, but safety and comfort features are essential, and the range should meet the requirements of a week's commute. The 2023 Renault Zoe R110 targets this demand, with a pricing of RM164,000 paired with standard Level 2 driving assistance, power seats, and a HUD head-up display across the range, positioning itself as a "highly-equipped entry-level" competitor. In this test drive, we primarily aim to verify its actual range performance, everyday driving quality, and whether the configurations truly meet the usage scenarios of family users.
The exterior of the Zoe R110 falls into a typical European small hatchback design, with smooth and streamlined overall lines, without overly aggressive contours. The most striking feature on the front is the full-width LED daytime running lights, connecting to the rectangular LED headlights on both sides, which are highly recognizable when lit; the lower grille adopts a honeycomb design, paired with black trim in the front fog light area, giving the front a layered look. The body side maintains compact proportions, featuring 16-inch alloy wheels with a simple design, and tire specifications of 195/55 R16, balancing grip and comfort. The rear design is relatively minimalist, with horizontally arranged tail lights that also use LED light sources internally. The lines of the trunk lid blend naturally with the rear window, giving the overall appearance a harmonious and pleasant aesthetic.
Once inside the car, the practical orientation of the interior becomes immediately apparent. The center console adopts a T-shaped layout, with a 9.3-inch touchscreen at the center. The screen has good resolution, and its operating fluidity meets mainstream standards. Below the screen, there are still some physical buttons to control air conditioning temperature and airflow, making blind operation more convenient. In terms of materials, the upper part of the center console is covered in soft plastics, while the inner sides of the door panels combine fabric and plastic. Although there is no leather wrapping, the craftsmanship is fairly solid. The feature highlights are quite prominent: the HUD head-up display clearly shows speed and navigation information, eliminating the need to frequently look down. Both the driver and front passenger seats are electrically adjustable, with a sufficient range to easily find a comfortable seating position. The digital instrument panel displays a wealth of information, such as range and power output, which can be toggled. For rear space, a passenger with a height of 175cm will have about one fist's worth of legroom and sufficient headroom without feeling cramped. The rear seats come with air conditioning vents and ISO FIX connectors, and the low floor tunnel makes it comfortable to temporarily accommodate three people. The trunk has a capacity of 338L, and by folding down the 60:40 split rear seats, the storage space can be expanded to accommodate items like baby strollers or folding bicycles, making it suitable for daily use.
In terms of powertrain, the Zoe R110 is equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a maximum power of 81kW (110PS) and a maximum torque of 225N·m, paired with a single-speed gearbox. The power response is very direct when starting; a light press on the accelerator results in a noticeable surge, making 0-60 km/h acceleration brisk enough for city commutes and enabling agile overtakes or lane changes. When switched to Eco mode, the power output becomes smoother, more suitable for energy-efficient driving in congested streets. The chassis uses a front MacPherson independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most of the bumps, avoiding a jarring impact. During high-speed cornering, the vehicle’s body roll is well-controlled within a reasonable range, providing a stable driving experience. The steering feels light and precise, making daily parking or U-turns very effortless.
Range testing is a key focus this time. The official WLTP range is 395km. During our test under mixed driving conditions (60% urban, 40% highway), with air conditioning and music on throughout, the actual range achieved was about 320km, approximately 81% of the stated range — a performance that is completely sufficient for daily commuting. With a daily journey of 50km over a five-day workweek, you only need to charge it once over the weekend. The fast-charging time is 9.5 hours, which isn't very fast, but if you use a home charging station for slow charging, plugging it in before bed means it will be fully charged by morning, minimizing any inconvenience. As for energy consumption, it is around 16kWh/100km under mixed driving conditions, increasing to 18kWh/100km on highways, which is within the normal range for its class.
The comfort details during driving are also worth mentioning. The noise control inside the car is excellent; below 60km/h, there is almost no noticeable motor noise, and wind and tire noise at high speeds remain within an acceptable range. The seats provide good support, so you won't feel back pain during long drives. The regenerative braking has two adjustable levels; when switched to the higher level, releasing the accelerator generates significant deceleration, essentially replacing the need for brakes and reducing foot movement.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2023 Renault Zoe R110 are clear: in the B-segment electric vehicle category, it is one of the few models that includes features such as L2-level assisted driving, electric seats, and HUD as standard across the range. With a price of RM164,000, it offers higher configuration levels than entry models of competitors in the same category. Compared to other vehicles at the same price point, such as the BYD Dolphin or MG4 Electric, the Zoe R110 may not have the longest range, but it excels in terms of its rich features.
This car is ideal for family users who value balanced configurations — it meets daily commuting needs and short family trips on weekends, offers robust safety features, sufficient space, and doesn't require frequent charging. If you don't need extreme acceleration performance and prefer to avoid paying for unnecessary features, and simply want a “hassle-free, adequate, well-equipped” daily commuter, the Zoe R110 is an excellent choice.
In summary, the 2023 Renault Zoe R110 is a “feature-first” practical electric car. It doesn't boast flashy designs, but it fully meets the safety and comfort needs of family users. With its well-rounded performance, it's a noteworthy option among 16K-level B-segment electric vehicles.
