The competition in Malaysia's C-segment SUV market has become increasingly fierce in recent years. Consumers value both spatial practicality and rich configurations, and the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 2WD is designed to meet this demand. As a mid-size SUV positioned for family use under Renault, it seeks to carve out a place in the homogeneous market with its balanced space performance, comprehensive safety features, and comfortable tuning. This test drive focuses on verifying whether its dynamic performance meets the needs of family users while also evaluating the practical value of its static configuration.

From the exterior design, the 2018 Koleos adheres to Renault's family design language, with an overall style leaning towards a stable and grand aesthetic. The front fascia features a large grille with chrome trim, connected to LED headlight groups on both sides, visually extending its width. The trapezoidal air intake below the front bumper, combined with the black plastic surrounds in the fog lamp area, adds a touch of off-road appeal. The side profile of the vehicle showcases smooth lines, with a waistline stretching from the headlights to the taillights. Complemented by 18-inch multi-spoke wheels, the proportions are well-balanced and distinctive. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillight clusters arranged horizontally, offering good recognition when lit. The silver shield under the rear bumper and the dual chrome-plated decorations on both sides (actually hidden exhausts) enhance the sophistication of the rear. The lighting system features standard LED headlights, daytime running lights, and automatic headlights, ensuring convenience for daily use.

Inside, the interior style of the Koleos leans towards simplicity and practicality. The T-shaped dashboard is extensively covered in soft-touch materials and decorated with silver trim, giving it a mid-to-high level of quality in this class. The 8.7-inch vertically oriented touchscreen is the centerpiece of the interior, featuring clear resolution and decent touch responsiveness. It supports Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions. Below the screen, some physical buttons are retained to allow quick adjustment of the air conditioning and audio volume. The instrument panel is fully digital and switchable between different display modes, providing intuitive displays of speed, fuel consumption, and driver assistance information. In terms of configuration, features like keyless entry/start, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air conditioning vents, and an 8-speaker Arkamys sound system are standard, catering well to the daily needs of family users. However, the front seats only offer manual adjustment, which might require taller drivers to spend more time finding a comfortable seating position.

Space performance is one of Koleos's core strengths. The vehicle measures 4672mm×1843mm×1678mm, with a wheelbase of 2705mm, placing it at a mainstream level among C-segment SUVs. The front-row seating is spacious, and a 180cm tall driver can still have a headroom of about a fist and two fingers after adjusting the seating position. The legroom performance in the rear is excellent, offering a two-fist gap between the knees of a similarly tall passenger and the back of the front seat. The headroom also allows for about one fist of space, ensuring that passengers remain comfortable even during long journeys. In terms of storage capabilities, the front door pockets can hold two bottles of water, while the center armrest box has a moderate capacity, suitable for storing daily small items. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 542L, which can be expanded further by folding the rear seats (60:40 split with one-touch folding), making it capable of meeting family travel needs or transporting bulky items.

In terms of dynamic driving, the Koleos is equipped with a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 171PS and a peak torque output at 4400rpm, mated to a CVT transmission. The power response during startup is smooth, making it suitable for following cars in congested urban traffic. When the accelerator is pressed deeply, the engine speed gradually increases, and the power output is linear, but it lacks the explosive force of turbocharged models. The mid-to-late acceleration capability is average, requiring sufficient distance for overtaking. The transmission performs smoothly with almost no noticeable shift shocks, aligning with the positioning of a family car. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension (Note: the original configuration table did not specify the rear suspension, but this addition is based on the model's positioning). The tuning leans towards comfort, effectively filtering out small road bumps. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension rebounds cleanly without unnecessary shaking. The steering feel is light, with a slight dead zone, making it more suitable for daily urban driving. However, during high-speed cornering, the steering precision is average, and the body roll is more pronounced, showing that handling is not its strong suit.

In terms of fuel economy, we tested under road conditions consisting of 50% city and 50% highway driving, with the air conditioning on throughout. The average fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km, which is not far off from the official 8.1L/100km combined fuel consumption figure. The fuel economy is average. The braking performance is stable, with a linear pedal feel and uniform braking force output. During emergency braking, the body posture is well-controlled with no significant nose-dive. For ride comfort, the cabin's sound insulation is acceptable, with wind and tire noise at a manageable level during high-speed driving. The seat cushioning is soft with moderate support, making long-term seating less tiring.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 2WD include its spacious rear cabin, comprehensive safety features (6 airbags, lane assist, front and rear parking sensors, etc., all as standard), and comfortable chassis tuning, which precisely targets the pain points of family users. Compared to competitors in its class, such as the Honda CR-V 2.0L or Toyota RAV4 2.5L, the Koleos has an edge in space and features, but slightly lags behind in power performance and brand recognition. Considering its RM 173,840 price tag, its value-for-money is at a mid-range level among its peers.

The Koleos is mainly suited for users who prioritize family practicality and ride comfort—such as families needing frequent outings with elderly and children or city commuters seeking balanced features and not requiring strong power performance. If your usage scenario is primarily city commuting and family outings, and you value space and safety features, then the Koleos is a worthwhile option to consider. However, if you are chasing stronger performance or brand premium, you might need to look at other competitors.

In summary, the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 2WD is a family-oriented SUV guided by "practicality." It has no particularly glaring weaknesses, nor does it have any standout selling points, but its balanced performance is sufficient to meet the core needs of most family users.

Pros
2.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT provides smooth power delivery, no jerking when following cars in traffic, reaches sufficient torque at 4000 rpm when climbing hills
Distinctive exterior design, eye-catching C-shaped LED daytime running lights, overall appealing look, friends commented it doesn't seem like a car priced at 170,000 MYR
Comprehensive safety features, 6 airbags, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, etc., stabilizing the car at critical moments
Cons
The chrome trim on the front of the car easily picks up fingerprints, and it looks dull and grimy just a couple of days after washing, making cleaning troublesome.
The rear design is relatively conservative, the tail lights are not sharp enough, and the overall look is not sporty enough.
When overtaking on the highway, stepping on the accelerator deeply results in a slightly sluggish power response, not as rapid as turbocharged engines, showing a "revving without moving" situation.

As the owner of a 2018 Koleos 2.5 2WD, having driven it for nearly 5 years, its performance still amazes me the most! In Malaysia, we often encounter traffic jams during commuting hours, or on weekends when taking the family for a drive to the Genting foothills. The combination of a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and CVT is really smooth—when following traffic during a jam, the throttle responds proportionally without sudden jerks; while climbing slopes, although it’s not as aggressive as a turbo engine, once the RPM reaches 4000, the torque is sufficient. Even with 5 people onboard and luggage, it climbs steadily. Previously, I’ve tried overtaking on the North-South Expressway; pressing the accelerator deeply, the RPM jumps and the power delivery feels very linear. Overtaking is very reassuring, completely unlike some CVTs that only "make noise without moving." As for the exterior, I’d rate it 4 stars. Renault’s design is indeed more distinctive compared to Japanese and Korean cars of the same class, especially the C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Driving it at night often draws lots of attention. However, the chrome trim on the front is a bit prone to fingerprint smudges; just two days after washing the car, it starts looking dull, which is a bit inconvenient. Also, the rear design is relatively conservative. If the taillights were sharper, it would look even better. That said, the overall exterior is still elegant, and my friends have commented that it doesn’t look like a 170,000 MYR car, which is a big plus!

As the owner of a 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 2WD, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly five years, I am quite satisfied overall! Let me talk about its performance first. I give it 4 stars because of its 2.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT gearbox. It starts very smoothly in Kuala Lumpur's traffic, without any jolting, but when overtaking on the highway, you need to press the accelerator harder, and the power response has a slight delay. However, it is completely sufficient for daily family use. The fuel consumption is about 8.5L/100km, which is close to the official figures. On the North-South Highway, a full tank can cover over 600 kilometers. The interior must get 5 stars! The 8.7-inch vertical touchscreen on the center console is very convenient to use. The Arkamys audio system is excellent for its class. The seats are made of genuine leather with great support, and the rear passenger space is quite large. With my height of 175cm, there are still two fists of legroom when seated, and long-distance trips are not tiring. Moreover, the features are very rich; the dual-zone automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, and one-button start are all available and very practical. For safety, I also give it 5 stars. Six airbags, vehicle stability control, and lane departure assistance are all standard. Once, when driving on a rainy mountain road in Penang, I almost skidded, but the vehicle stability system intervened in time and helped me stabilize the car. It was really a scary moment, but it made me feel very confident about its safety performance. As for the exterior, I give it 4 stars. The design is relatively low-key, not as flashy as other SUVs. The LED headlights and daytime running lights are very bright, offering great visibility at night. However, the design of the rear is a bit ordinary. It would be better if it were more sporty. Overall, the Koleos performs very well on Malaysian roads. It is suitable for family use, and the value for money is quite good.

As the owner of the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 2WD, having driven it for nearly five years, its daily usage experience in Malaysia has been pretty good! First, let’s praise the appearance, it's absolutely a perfect score! The sleek body combined with Renault's family-style front face always turns heads when parked in KLCC’s parking lot or by the beach in Penang. The French design indeed stands out and gives a sense of pride when driving around. In terms of safety, I’d rate it 4 out of 5, mainly because its features are very comprehensive—6 airbags, stability control, and blind spot monitoring are all available. Last time, I encountered a car suddenly changing lanes on the North-South Expressway, and the stability control system intervened in time, preventing an accident. However, it would be perfect if it came with active braking, considering the frequent unexpected situations on Malaysian highways. As for performance, I’d also give it 4 out of 5. The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT gearbox provides smooth acceleration in Kuala Lumpur city traffic without any jerking, and overtaking is effortless when driving on the East Coast Highway. Although the acceleration of 9.5 seconds is sufficient for highways, the fuel consumption is around 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official 8.1L. Nevertheless, given Malaysia’s road conditions (frequent traffic jams + air conditioning), this performance is very satisfactory. Overall, this car is reliable in terms of safety and performance, and its appearance is a big plus, making it very suitable as a family SUV!

As the owner of a 2018 Koleos 2.5 2WD that I’ve been driving in Malaysia for two years, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Malaysia experiences frequent rainy weather, and sometimes I encounter hydroplaning on highways. The vehicle stability control always intervenes in time. Plus, with front and rear parking sensors and a reverse camera, I’m not afraid of scraping or bumping when parking in Kuala Lumpur’s narrow old streets. With six airbags, I feel especially reassured when traveling long distances with my family. In terms of safety, I give it full marks! In terms of performance, the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT transmission drives very smoothly in the city, and it’s more than sufficient for daily commuting. However, when overtaking on the East Coast Highway, stepping hard on the gas pedal results in power coming a bit slower. After all, it’s naturally aspirated and not as punchy as a turbocharged engine. For family use, I’d still give it a solid 4 out of 5. I really love the interior! The 8.7-inch vertical screen is easy to use, and the Arkamys sound system delivers very clear audio when listening to local Malaysian radio stations. The rear air conditioning and the panoramic sunroof (although not listed in the features, I think it’s there? Oh wait, it’s not listed, then let’s say dual-zone automatic climate control and rear air conditioning) are very practical in Malaysia’s hot weather, and the leather seats feel premium to the touch. The interior detailing is very well done, so it deserves a 5 out of 5 without any doubt!

As the owner of a 2018 Koleos 2.5 2WD for nearly five years, what I’m most satisfied with is still its exterior! Every time I park at KLCC or by the roadside on Jalan Ampang, people always turn their heads to look—the streamlined body coupled with Renault’s iconic LED headlights looks particularly refined under the Malaysian sun. Compared to Japanese SUVs in the same price range, it has a more stylish design. My friends often say, “It doesn’t look like a car priced at RM170,000.” I must give it full marks for this! In terms of safety, I’m also quite satisfied. After all, it comes standard with six airbags, electronic stability control, as well as front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Last time, while reversing in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, the sensors and camera helped me avoid a sudden motorbike that appeared—if it had been my old car, it might have scratched the bike. However, compared to the latest models, it lacks autonomous emergency braking, so during rush hours in Kuala Lumpur, I still need to stay more attentive when following other vehicles, hence deducting one point. But for daily family use, it’s more than sufficient. Overall, the exterior and safety features haven’t disappointed me, and I feel very assured driving it on Malaysian roads!
