Tesla Model 3 2022 Review

In recent years, Malaysia's electric vehicle market has grown rapidly, with household users gradually becoming the main consumer group. These users value both practical range and rich configurations. The 2022 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD targets precisely this niche market, with its core selling points including a WLTP range of over 600 kilometers, an all-wheel-drive system, and Tesla's signature smart features. The main purpose of this test drive is to see if it meets the practical needs of Malaysian families for daily commutes, weekend trips, and other routines.
In terms of appearance, the overall design of the Model 3 maintains a simple style, with the front face lacking the traditional grille of fuel-powered vehicles. Instead, it relies on a continuous front line and sharp LED headlights on both sides to create distinctiveness. The visual effect of the LED daytime running lights is clear when lit, aligning with current electric vehicle design trends. The side profile features smooth lines, with a clean and sharp waistline stretching from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 18-inch tires that are proportionate and understated. At the rear, the taillights are treated with a smoked finish and adopt Tesla's classic C-shaped design, which is highly recognizable when lit. The rear fog light is integrated below the bumper, keeping the overall design simple yet functional.
Entering the interior, the minimalist style is immediately apparent. The center console has almost no physical buttons, with all functions integrated into the 15-inch LCD central touchscreen. The steering wheel features a multifunctional design, with the left side incorporating controls for the driver-assistance system, while the right side manages multimedia and cruise control functions, offering clear operational logic. In terms of materials, the seats are made of leatherette material, with the front seats supporting 8-way electric adjustment. The driver’s seat is also equipped with 4-way electric lumbar support. The rear seats offer a 60:40 split-fold capability, allowing for an expanded trunk space, convenient for stowing strollers or suitcases. In terms of configuration, the standard HUD head-up digital display provides real-time speed and navigation information. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning supports independent adjustments for both front and rear seats, and a USB port is available below the rear air vents for rear passengers to meet their charging needs.
Regarding space performance, the Model 3 has a wheelbase of 2,875mm. For passengers 175cm tall, the front-row headroom has about one fist of allowance, along with ample legroom. Rear-row seating space is also notable; for a 175cm tall passenger sitting in the rear, there is two fists of distance between the knees and the front seat, and headroom also has a fist of allowance. Even with three passengers fully occupying the rear, it does not feel cramped. In terms of storage capacity, the front center armrest box has a deep internal space that can fit a laptop, and there is also a wireless charging pad located in front of the armrest box. The rear central armrest is equipped with cup holders. The trunk has a conventional capacity of 425 liters, which can be expanded to 1,580 liters by folding down the rear seats, ample for accommodating luggage for family trips.
In terms of power, the Model 3 Long Range AWD is equipped with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors at the front and rear, offering a combined system output of approximately 346 horsepower, with peak torque at 559 Nm. During daily driving, the starting response is swift, providing instant power delivery upon stepping on the accelerator. The 0-100km/h acceleration time is approximately 4.4 seconds. Deeply pressing the accelerator for overtaking ensures sufficient power reserves, maintaining strong acceleration even at high speeds. The all-wheel-drive system performs stably on rainy or slippery roads, effectively preventing slippage. There are three driving modes available: Comfort, Standard, and Sport. In Comfort mode, acceleration is more gradual, making it suitable for daily commuting, while Sport mode enhances power response, ideal for scenarios where driving pleasure is prioritized.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal dead angles, providing high agility when making U-turns or parking in narrow urban areas. The suspension system combines a front double-wishbone independent suspension with a rear multi-link independent suspension. It effectively absorbs most bumps when dealing with Malaysia's common speed bumps or uneven roads, keeping the body stable without noticeable jolts and maintaining a good level of comfort. When navigating curves, the suspension provides adequate support, resulting in minimal body roll and stable cornering. However, rear passengers may feel slight vibrations on continuously bumpy roads.
In terms of range and power consumption, the WLTP range is 614 kilometers. During actual tests, in city commutes (approximately 50% congested roads), the power consumption averages around 16.5kWh per 100 kilometers, achieving about 85% of the range. On highways (average speed of 90km/h), the power consumption is around 18.5kWh per 100 kilometers, with a range achievement rate of approximately 80%. This performance generally meets the needs of family users for a one-week charging cycle. For fast charging, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% using a supercharging station, while slow charging takes about 8 hours.
In terms of ride comfort, Model 3 performs well in noise control. Below speeds of 60km/h, no significant wind or tire noise can be heard inside the car. At speeds exceeding 80km/h, wind noise gradually increases but remains within an acceptable range. The lumbar support of the front seats is well-adjusted, making long drives less fatiguing. The heated rear seats are particularly practical during rainy or cool weather. The energy recovery system offers three levels of adjustment. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator pedal produces a distinct deceleration sensation, suitable for single-pedal driving, while the lowest level feels closer to the coasting experience of a traditional fuel car, catering to different driving preferences.
Overall, the 2022 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD's core advantages lie in its long range, powerful performance, and rich intelligent features. Compared to same-class models like the BYD Atto 3 Long Range version, the Model 3 offers longer range, better acceleration performance, and a more advanced driver assistance system. However, the Atto 3 has a more homey interior design and slightly more spacious rear seating. In terms of suitable users, the Model 3 Long Range AWD is ideal for families focusing on practical range and those who appreciate intelligent driving assistance features. It also caters to young consumers who occasionally seek driving fun. Whether for daily commuting, weekend family outings, or long-distance road trips, the Model 3 is well-equipped to handle it. In conclusion, this car strikes a good balance between range, performance, and features, making it a worthwhile family EV option in the Malaysian market.
