The competition in Malaysia's B-segment electric vehicle market has become increasingly intense in recent years. Consumers are not only pursuing practical range but also emphasizing a balance between smart features and value for money. The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), as the brand's entry-level model, enters the market at a price of RM 181,000. Its core selling points include an official range of 513km, standard ventilated and heated seats, and a complete active safety system. This test drive will focus on verifying its balance in daily use to see if it can become a pragmatic choice for family users or commuters.

Approaching the 2024 Model 3 RWD, the first impression is the cleaner and sharper exterior design. The body dimensions measure 4,720mm in length, 1,848mm in width, and 1,442mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,875mm. The overall lines are sleek and low-slung, maintaining Tesla's signature coupe stance. The front fascia eliminates the traditional front grille, using only a small intake vent below the front bumper to optimize cooling. Combined with the sharp LED headlight units on both sides, the vehicle displays a high level of recognition. The headlights support automatic on-off and daytime running light functions, offering adequate illumination at night. The sides of the car feature flush door handles, which reduce drag and enhance the tech-savvy look. The 18-inch wheels are paired with 255/45R18 tires, showcasing a simple design while promising commendable grip performance. At the rear, the LED taillights feature a smoked-through design, delivering a striking visual effect when illuminated. A small spoiler on the trunk lid adds a touch of sportiness to the car's appearance.

Opening the door reveals a minimalist interior, a consistent style for Tesla. The dashboard has almost no physical buttons, as all functions are centralized on the 15.4-inch touchscreen display. The screen has a high resolution and offers smooth operation. Common functions such as air conditioning, navigation, and media can easily be found. Soft-touch materials dominate the interior, complemented by small amounts of wood trim, resulting in an overall texture that aligns with the positioning of a B-segment vehicle. The front seats support electric adjustment and feature heating and ventilation functions. The seat padding is of medium firmness, ensuring comfort even during long periods of use. The rear seats are also equipped with heating functions and can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split. With a wheelbase of 2,875mm, a 175cm tall passenger would have about two fists of legroom in the rear and roughly one fist of headroom, offering a spacious experience overall. Regarding storage space, the front center armrest box is roomy enough to store daily small items. The trunk has a standard capacity of 682L, and folding the rear seats increases the available space significantly, meeting the needs for family outings or transporting goods. Additionally, the rear seats feature air vents and USB charging ports, offering great practicality.

For dynamic driving, the Model 3 RWD is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering a maximum power of 195kW (265PS) and maximum torque of 340N·m. Its official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.1 seconds. The motor responds quickly at startup, providing a noticeable push with light accelerator input. The car has ample power reserves for overtaking or merging in city traffic. When switched to Sport mode, the power output becomes more aggressive, catering to users seeking driving thrills. In Standard mode, the power output is relatively smoother, making it better suited for daily commuting. The steering is precise, with minimal play; it's light and easy to handle at low speeds, while at high speeds, it becomes more stable and inspires confidence. The suspension features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent setup, tuned for a sporty feel while retaining some comfort. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs most vibrations, avoiding any pronounced harshness. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the suspension provides solid support, showcasing excellent overall stability.

In terms of range and energy consumption, the vehicle is equipped with a 60kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, with an official range of 513km. This test drive primarily took place on urban roads, with the air conditioning and music turned on throughout the journey. The average speed was approximately 40km/h, and the actual range achieved was about 85% of the displayed range, with an energy consumption of roughly 13kWh per 100 kilometers. These results place it in the upper-middle level among vehicles in the same category. At highway speeds, wind noise becomes slightly more noticeable when the speed exceeds 100km/h, though it remains within an acceptable range. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels: high, medium, and low. When set to high, releasing the accelerator significantly slows the vehicle, approximating a one-pedal driving mode, which can effectively enhance range. The low setting provides a coasting feel closer to that of a traditional gasoline car, making it suitable for users transitioning from fuel cars. Additionally, the vehicle's sound insulation performance is commendable. Aside from the wind noise at high speeds, tire noise and motor noise are well-controlled, providing a high level of driving comfort.

Compared with vehicles in the same segment, the advantages of the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive version lie in its brand influence, smart features, and range performance. For instance, compared with other similarly priced midsize electric vehicles, it comes standard with a full suite of active safety systems such as lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking, as well as comfort features like heated and ventilated seats and the HEPA air filtration system, offering excellent value for money. However, its interior design might be considered overly minimalist by some users, lacking the sense of occasion found in traditional vehicle interiors, and it does not come with a spare tire, which may be somewhat inconvenient for long-distance travel.

Overall, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive version is a highly balanced model, capable of meeting the needs of both daily commuting and family trips. It is particularly suitable for users who value practical range, smart features, and driving experience, especially young families or those who frequently drive in urban areas. If your budget is around RM 180,000 and you are looking for a reliable, well-equipped electric vehicle from a reputable brand, the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive version is worth serious consideration.

During the morning rush hour, overtaking is never sluggish, 4.4-second acceleration gives you full confidence! No crowding even with three friends in the back row, 629km range is enough for a whole week of commuting. Ventilated seats are lifesavers in hot weather, HEPA filters out heat and dust from the road, maximizing the sense of security~

Previously, I drove a Japanese fuel car, and switching to the Model 3 is like switching to a whole new world! Crawling through Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur during the morning rush hour, the one-pedal mode is fantastic. There's no need to frequently step on the brakes, making my foot feel much more relaxed. Took the family to Penang over the weekend, and a full charge running 513km was more than enough. The highway ACC system follows cars super steadily, and the LFP battery didn’t lose much range even in the tropical climate. The safety features are truly reassuring. With 7 airbags and active braking, the system automatically stopped the car last time I almost rear-ended another vehicle in Malacca. The interior is minimalist yet premium, and the ventilated seats are a lifesaver in Malaysia's hot and humid weather. The HEPA filter is also excellent at filtering out haze. A small downside is that there’s no spare tire, so I had to call for roadside assistance when I ran over a nail last time; also, the rear air conditioning feels a bit weak. But overall, it’s fantastic! For RM180K, the configuration and experience beat similarly priced BBAs by a lot!

When the green light flashes and you step on the accelerator to zoom out, you can barely see the taillights of the gas cars next to you. This feeling of acceleration is absolutely thrilling!

Every time I accelerate quickly, it feels like being kicked, but the range drops faster than ice melts in bubble tea on a humid and hot day…

Previously, I drove a Japanese fuel car, but after switching to the Model 3 Performance, I was completely conquered by its performance—during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, a single press of the accelerator instantly overtakes slow-moving MPVs, and the 3.1-second acceleration is even faster than my friend's M3. The interior is minimalist yet practical, the 15-inch screen is easy to operate, but the piano black finish is too prone to fingerprints. Safety is impeccable with 7 airbags and active braking; last time on the Penang highway, there was a near-rear-end collision, but the system stopped the car directly. On weekends, it’s perfect for long trips to Ipoh, with a 528km range that covers a round trip, and there are plenty of supercharging stations. The only downside is the low ground clearance; you have to be careful with speed bumps in the old streets of Malacca. Overall, I'm very satisfied, and you won't regret choosing this electric car in Malaysia!
