In Malaysia's business travel and multi-family car market, 10-seater MPVs are always a rigid demand. These types of vehicles need to balance passenger comfort while meeting the stability requirements for long-distance travel—this is where the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB stands out as a popular choice in this niche segment. In this test drive, we primarily evaluate its space practicality, the actual performance of its diesel engine, and whether its "luxury" configurations truly enhance daily usability.

At first glance, the 2024 HIACE SLWB gives an impression of a square and majestic design, with a typical commercial vehicle silhouette but refined details. The front features Toyota's signature family-style design, with a trapezoidal grille paired with horizontal chrome strips, showcasing a high degree of recognition with the iconic brand logo in the center; the halogen headlights on both sides are square-shaped, and the standard daytime running lights and front fog lights enhance practicality, maintaining good visibility even in rainy or foggy weather. The side profile displays straight lines, with the 3860mm long wheelbase clearly reflected in the length of the doors, and the sliding rear door design allows easy access for rear passengers; the rear part is clean and sharp, with vertically integrated taillights that blend seamlessly with the body, equipped with rear fog lights and high-mounted brake lights. The overall design leans towards stability, fitting its commercial positioning.

Opening the cockpit, the interior design focuses on practicality, with a symmetrical layout on the dashboard and durable plastic materials that are well-assembled. A multifunctional steering wheel comes as standard, with buttons for volume control and phone answering on the left side, making operation convenient; the instrument panel is a Multi-information Display (MID), clearly showing data like RPM, speed, and fuel level, making the readings intuitive. The 7-inch central control screen is positioned at the top of the dashboard; though not particularly large, its interface is simple and supports basic multimedia functions. Notably, the vehicle is equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, which is quite convenient for business users to charge laptops on the go. Regarding seating, the driver’s seat supports 6-way adjustments, allowing a comfortable driving position for extended periods. The second-row passenger seat is 4-way adjustable, while the third-row and subsequent seats support a recline function and are equipped with headrests, enhancing comfort during long-distance rides. With a 10-seater layout, it accommodates multiple passengers conveniently.

Space performance is one of the core advantages of the HIACE SLWB. The front driver’s seat offers ample headroom; with a height of 175cm, occupants still have about two fist-widths of space above their heads. The legroom for second-row and third-row passengers is also reasonably spacious, ensuring that even a full load of passengers won't feel overly cramped. In terms of storage, there is a storage compartment below the dashboard, cup holders and storage slots on the door panels, allowing convenient placement of items such as phones and water bottles. The trunk space, even when fully loaded with passengers, can still accommodate several carry-on suitcases, and folding down the rear seats further enhances the loading capacity, meeting the needs of business transport or family luggage storage.

In terms of power, the 2024 HIACE SLWB is equipped with a 2.8L turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 177PS and a peak torque of 450N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response at the start is smooth, and once the turbo kicks in, the power output is strong. When driving in urban areas, even with full loads, overtaking or accelerating is effortless; on highways, gear transitions are seamless, and the engine maintains about 2000 RPM to keep a speed of 100km/h, showcasing good fuel efficiency during cruising. The official combined fuel consumption is 8.2L/100km. During our test drive, the fuel consumption was about 9.5L/100km in city traffic and dropped to 7.8L/100km on highways, in line with the characteristic low fuel consumption of diesel vehicles.

The handling and chassis performance are tuned more towards comfort. Both the front and rear suspensions are MacPherson independent suspensions, which can filter out most of the small vibrations when dealing with bumpy roads. Even when passing over speed bumps or potholes, passengers inside the car will not feel obvious jolts. The steering wheel has moderate weight and decent accuracy. Although the vehicle body is relatively large, it does not feel bulky during urban turns or parking. In terms of braking, both the front and rear are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, providing responsive braking and a linear pedal feel, giving enough confidence to the driver. When it comes to noise control, the diesel engine produces slight vibrations and noises at idle; however, while driving, wind noise and tire noise are well suppressed and do not interfere with normal conversations inside the car.

Overall, the core highlights of the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB are clear: a spacious 10-seat layout, ample diesel power, practical features, and a reliable brand reputation. Compared to other vehicles in its class, its price (RM 169,000) is at a moderate level among luxury MPVs. Features such as the 220V power outlet and rear sliding door are more tailored to the needs of business users. This car is suitable for two types of users: business users who frequently need to transport clients or employees and families with more members who require long-distance travel. All in all, it is a model that balances practicality and reliability, and it can effectively meet the demands of group travel.

Pros
The appearance is atmospheric and exquisite, with smooth body lines, a blackened grille paired with chrome trim adds a touch of class, suitable for both business and family use.
The 2.8T diesel engine is powerful, with ample torque, making climbing hills and overtaking easy, even when fully loaded.
Fuel consumption is economical, with an average fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km, lower than the official data, resulting in low usage costs.
Cons
The number of airbags is limited to only 3, with no rear side airbags, offering incomplete protection.
The front air conditioning is manually controlled, and when carrying 10 passengers, the cooling in the rear row is slow, making it inconvenient to use.
The interior feels plasticky, with limited soft-touch materials, and some details lack a premium feel.

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB, after three months of driving, I most want to talk about its appearance and safety. First, let’s praise the appearance! A perfect 5 out of 5—the bodylines of this long-wheelbase version are so classy, especially the smoked front grille paired with Toyota’s signature chrome trims. Every time I park at the KLCC parking lot, people always turn their heads to look. The streamlined design of the body sides doesn’t feel as bulky as traditional vans; instead, it exudes the elegance of a luxury MPV. When I drove it to Sabah to pick up clients, their first reaction was, “This vehicle looks so high-end,” which really made me proud. As for safety, I would rate it 4 out of 5. It performs well overall but has room for improvement. Since Malaysia has frequent rainy days, water often pools on highways, and the vehicle stability control system along with ABS always kicks in promptly. Once, when I was on the North-South Expressway avoiding a suddenly lane-changing motorbike, I had to brake hard, and the car didn’t skid at all. This aspect is very reassuring. However, there are only three airbags, and if side airbags could also be installed for rear passengers, it would be even better—after all, I often drive my family to Genting Highlands, and having more airbags just feels safer. Overall, the appearance is definitely a highlight, and the safety features are adequate for daily use, but improving some finer details would make it even better!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB, having driven it for almost half a year in Malaysia, the overall experience has been quite satisfying! Starting with the interior, while it's not luxurious to the point of being dazzling, its practicality is top-notch—the 7-inch central control screen operates smoothly, the MID instrument panel displays information clearly, and the front row 6-way adjustable seats ensure comfort on long trips (like from Kuala Lumpur to Penang). The 10 reclining seats in the back make it a pleasure for family and friends on trips to Genting Highlands, and they always praise the comfort. The only minor regret is that the front air conditioning is manual, and it would be perfect if it were automatic. A 4-star rating is quite reasonable. When it comes to safety, I feel pretty assured. ABS and vehicle stability control come as standard; with Malaysia’s frequent rains and occasional unexpected situations on highways, these features keep the vehicle steady. While 3 airbags may not seem like a lot, they’re sufficient for everyday city commuting and interstate driving. Last time, when I had a minor rear-end collision on the North-South Expressway, the vehicle’s rigidity did not let me down. Another solid 4-star rating. As for the exterior, it embodies Toyota’s typical commercial vehicle style—boxy but with sleeker lines compared to older models. The halogen headlights combined with daytime running lights offer excellent visibility during those foggy Penang mornings. The 16-inch wheels paired with 235 tires perform well even on rural roads (like when driving to Ipoh for bean sprout chicken on bumpy roads). While it may not turn heads in the KLCC parking lot like a luxury car, it’s practical and pleasantly understated. A solid 4-star rating as well. All in all, at this price point, being able to get such a spacious and reliable vehicle makes it perfect for Malaysian families or small businesses!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB and after driving it in Malaysia for nearly half a year, I’d like to talk about two main points: the interior and the performance. Let’s talk about the interior first. I’d rate it a 4 because while it’s practical overall, it’s not exactly stunning. I usually take my family or friends along (10 seats are just perfect). The 6-way adjustable driver’s seat in the front is quite comfortable, and the rear seats can recline, making long trips less tiring. There’s also a 220V power socket, which makes it very convenient for rear passengers to charge their devices. However, the infotainment touchscreen is only 7 inches, which feels a bit small compared to the current trend of larger screens. The front air conditioning is still manual, requiring you to turn the knob to adjust the temperature; if it were automatic, it would save even more hassle. Now let’s praise the performance, which definitely deserves a 5! Highways in Malaysia often have steep slopes, and sometimes I carry the full capacity of people and luggage. The 2.8T diesel engine’s 450N·m torque is really powerful. You can feel its strong pull every time you step on the accelerator, making overtaking easy. The 6-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, and even when cruising on the highway at 120km/h, the RPM is just over 2000. Fuel consumption is around 8.5L/100km, which is actually a bit better than the official rating. The most surprising aspect is the suspension. The MacPherson independent suspension handles Malaysia's bumpy roads (like the potholes on rural roads) effortlessly, and the rear passengers won’t feel too much discomfort. This is a big plus when carrying people. In conclusion, while the interior does have minor shortcomings, they don’t affect its usability. The performance is truly exceptional. As a family or commercial MPV, the HIACE SLWB performs superbly under Malaysia’s road conditions!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB who has been driving it in Malaysia for nearly half a year, I sincerely feel that I made the right choice with this car! Let me first praise its exterior. Although it’s a van, the design is very stylish, with smooth body lines. Whether I’m using it to pick up clients or take the family out on trips, it still turns heads. My friends say it doesn’t look as "utilitarian" as the traditional Hiace, full marks with no complaints! The interior is even more surprising. Even with a 10-seater layout, it doesn’t feel cramped, especially the space in the second row. My family doesn’t feel tired even on long trips. The seat materials feel very comfortable, and the central control screen is easy to operate. Given the hot weather in Malaysia, the air conditioning cools super fast, which definitely deserves praise. I would give the interior a full 5 stars. As for performance, I’d give it 4 stars. The 2.8T diesel engine feels very steady when overtaking on the highway, and even running at 120km/h on the East Coast Highway, it doesn’t feel floaty. However, when driving in Kuala Lumpur’s city traffic, the initial acceleration feels a bit sluggish. But considering the vehicle’s weight, this performance is already quite good overall, so I’m still very satisfied!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota HIACE SLWB, I’ve been using it for nearly half a year in Malaysia, and the overall experience has been excellent! Let’s start with the exterior – the silver body paired with the sleek and atmospheric design always catches the eye whenever I park at KL Sentral or George Town in Penang's historic areas. My friends often comment that it looks like a “high-end mobile office,” and it definitely deserves a 5 out of 5 rating! The performance is an even bigger surprise. The 2.8T diesel engine handles the start-stop traffic of Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour with incredible stability. Tap the accelerator, and you can feel the 450N·m of torque. Even when fully loaded with 10 family members going to Genting Highlands, climbing steep roads is effortless. The gearbox shifts smoothly, defying expectations for a vehicle of this size. Performance gets a perfect 5 out of 5 – no doubt about it! In terms of safety, I’d rate it 4 out of 5. The standard ABS and vehicle stability control prove very practical on rainy days when driving on the North-South Expressway. Last time, I had to brake suddenly on a slippery road near Ipoh, and the vehicle remained stable without veering. However, there are only three airbags; if it could have two more side airbags, it would feel safer. Overall, I’m still quite satisfied!
