In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment electric vehicle market has become increasingly intense. Consumers not only focus on range and performance but also value safety features and daily practicality. As the core model of Volvo's pure electric series, the 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge has not only upgraded its power parameters but also optimized its range and charging efficiency with this facelift, while maintaining the same price of RM 288,888 as the 2023 model, making its cost-performance advantage worth exploring. This test drive focuses on evaluating its dynamic performance, range achievement rate, and practical features to provide a reference for potential buyers.

In terms of appearance, the 2024 C40 Recharge continues the coupe SUV's sloping roofline design, with smooth and sporty lines. The front features Volvo's signature closed vertical waterfall-style grille, paired with "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, offering high recognizability. On the side, the 20-inch two-tone wheels (235/45R20 front, 255/40R20 rear) appear more prominent and stylish compared to the 19-inch wheels of the 2023 model, while the black plastic cladding on the side skirts and wheel arches enhances its crossover characteristics. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights remain a design highlight, featuring vertical light bar patterns when lit, providing excellent nighttime visibility. The diffuser-like design at the bottom of the rear bumper further accentuates its sporty aesthetics.

Inside, the interior features a light color scheme, complemented by metallic trims and soft-touch materials, offering a more premium feel compared to the 2023 model. The center console layout is simple, featuring a 9-inch touchscreen equipped with built-in Google system for smooth operation and voice control support, a significant improvement over the standard touchscreen in the 2023 model, enhancing the smart interactive experience. The 12-inch fully digital instrument panel displays information clearly and allows for customization of different driving information interfaces. In terms of configuration, the front seats are equipped with power adjustment and memory functions, while the passenger seat also has power adjustment. The dual-zone automatic climate control system includes rear air vents, and the car is equipped with 8 speakers throughout. For storage, the central armrest box in the front row offers moderate space, door panel storage compartments can accommodate large water bottles, and the trunk provides 404 liters of capacity. The rear seats can be folded in a 60/40 split to accommodate larger items.

The space performance is consistent with the positioning of a C-segment SUV, with a wheelbase of 2702mm ensuring ample rear legroom. For passengers with heights of 175cm, there are still two fists of space between their knees and the front seatback, though the headroom is slightly constrained due to the sloping roofline, it does not affect daily usability. The rear central floor is almost flat, providing a comfortable seating experience for passengers in the middle. The inclusion of ISO FIX child safety seat anchors is standard, making it convenient for family users.

During dynamic driving, the dual-motor system of the 2024 C40 Recharge delivers a combined power output of 308kW (419PS) and torque of 670N·m, slightly improved compared to the 300kW (408PS) and 660N·m of the 2023 model. In daily driving, switching to comfort mode provides smooth starts and a responsive throttle, and when the accelerator pedal is pressed deeply, its 0-100km/h acceleration in 4.7 seconds is evident, making overtaking effortless. In sports mode, the power delivery becomes more aggressive, and the steering wheel feels heavier, catering to users seeking driving excitement.

The chassis adopts a front MacPherson + rear multi-link independent suspension, with tuning inclined towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, and the body shows no significant swaying. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides sufficient support, keeping body roll within a reasonable range. The all-wheel drive system performs stably on slippery roads, with no slipping during starts and acceleration.

In terms of range and charging, the 82kWh ternary lithium battery pack offers an official range of 550km. Road tests under mixed driving conditions with the air conditioning set at 24℃ achieved about 85% of the claimed range, with a power consumption of 16.5kWh per 100 kilometers, slightly higher than the official 15.1kWh figure. In fast-charging mode, it takes 0.46 hours to charge up to 80%, a significant improvement in charging efficiency compared to the 10-hour fast-charging time of the 2023 model. Slow charging takes 8 hours, suitable for overnight charging via home charging stations.

Details of driving comfort are well-executed. The cabin offers excellent sound insulation, with wind and tire noise well-controlled during high-speed driving. The seat cushions are soft yet supportive, making long drives less fatiguing. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels; in the highest setting, releasing the pedal provides noticeable deceleration, reducing the need for braking. In the lowest setting, it closely mimics the coasting experience of fuel cars, catering to different driving habits.

Safety features have always been a traditional strength of Volvo. The 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge comes standard with seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and more. The 360-degree panoramic camera + automatic parking system enhances parking convenience. Compared to the 2023 model, the newly added ACC adaptive cruise control automatically follows the car ahead during highway cruising, reducing the burden on the driver.

Overall, the 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge surpasses the 2023 model in terms of performance, range, and smart configurations, while maintaining the same price, making it highly cost-effective. Compared to its competitors in the same class, such as the Tesla Model Y (starting at RM 199,000), the C40 Recharge offers richer safety features and more superior interior quality; compared to the BMW iX3, it has an edge in performance and smart systems.

This car is suitable for family users focused on safety, range, and comfort, while also meeting the demands of younger consumers for sporty performance and technological features. Its well-rounded capabilities give it strong competitiveness in the C-segment electric SUV market, making it an ideal choice for those pursuing quality and practicality.

Pros
Comprehensive safety configuration, active braking, lane-keeping system, etc., have repeatedly avoided accidents, providing a strong sense of security
Excellent performance, fast acceleration (0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds), agile start in urban areas, and effortless overtaking on highways
Advanced exterior design, coupe-style silhouette + Thor's hammer headlights with high recognition rate, attracting attention
Cons
The rear space is cramped, legroom is insufficient, and the high center floor affects the riding experience.
The car paint is prone to dirt or relatively thin; black paint gets stained with tree sap, white paint gets dirty easily, and the paint surface is prone to leaving marks.
Some functions need optimization; the central control screen occasionally lags, and the adaptive cruise control has few following distance settings.

Owner of 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge
As an owner who has been driving the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge in Kuala Lumpur for half a year, the overall experience has been quite satisfying! In terms of performance, the electric vehicle is really enjoyable in city traffic jams, with quick response at startup and greater flexibility in maneuvering through traffic compared to petrol cars. However, I went to Genting Highlands last week, and I felt the power wasn't as strong in the later stages of climbing; perhaps it's due to the battery draining faster on mountain roads? The interior reflects Volvo's quality, with seats that provide good support. Kuala Lumpur summers are long, and the ventilated seats are incredibly practical! The only issue is that the central control screen occasionally responds a bit slowly, taking two seconds to adjust the air conditioning. The safety features are very comprehensive. Last month on the LDP Highway, I was almost cut off, but the automatic braking system stopped timely, and the lane-keeping feature makes long drives on the North-South Expressway less stressful. As for the exterior, the fastback design gets a lot of attention; however, black paint tends to attract tree sap, and with the frequent rain in Malaysia, the car gets dirty just two days after a wash… In summary, as a city commuter car, the C40 Recharge is still very suitable for use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge EV
As the owner of the 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge EV in Malaysia for almost half a year, let’s talk about my experience with its performance and interior. Giving a score of 4 for performance feels reasonable. Its 4.7-second 0-100 km/h acceleration is really impressive. During morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur, as long as there’s a gap ahead, just a light press on the accelerator allows you to catch up quickly, with no delays. However, being an electric vehicle, weighing 2.6 tons, driving on Penang’s hilly roads with frequent ups and downs, although the four-wheel drive is very stable, you can still slightly feel the “heaviness” during rapid acceleration, lacking the lightness of a fuel car. Hence, I deducted one point. For the interior, I also give it a 4. The minimalist Nordic design is very much to my taste. The 12.3-inch touchscreen operates smoothly, and the HUD head-up display is super convenient for checking navigation on highways without looking down. The seats are electrically adjustable, and the leather feels very comfortable, keeping me from experiencing backaches even on long drives. However, the rear space is just right for my 175cm height, but my parents always complain about the limited legroom when sitting in the back. Additionally, although the interior feels premium, there aren’t many storage compartments, leaving small items like phones and keys without a place to go. Improving this aspect would make it even better. Overall, both these aspects performed well and met my expectations.

Owner of 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge
As a 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge owner, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost a year, and I think its interior and safety features are quite impressive! The interior has a kind of understated luxury feel. The woodgrain trim on the center console feels very high-quality to the touch, and the seats are made of eco-friendly materials but still comfortable even during long use—not to mention that Malaysia is over 30 degrees year-round, so this is crucial for someone like me who commutes an hour every day. If I had to point out a minor flaw, it would be the damping feeling of the glove box on the passenger side, which feels a little loose and sometimes makes a "pop" sound when closing. It's not a big deal, but if it were more refined, it would be perfect. A reasonable 4 stars. As for safety, there's no need to say much—it's Volvo's signature, and they definitely live up to it. Last month in George Town, Penang, I encountered an emergency situation where the car in front suddenly braked hard. My C40 activated the automatic braking system and came to a steady stop without rear-ending the car ahead. Considering how narrow and crowded streets are in the old town area, with pedestrians and motorbikes weaving through traffic, this active safety system really saved me. However, there was one instance on the highway using adaptive cruise control where the system kept a relatively far following distance when driving alongside large trucks. Cars behind kept honking to rush me, so it would be nice if there were more distance settings available. Overall, it's still a solid 4 stars—plenty of safety assured!

Owner of 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge
As a 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge owner, after driving for three months in Malaysia, I truly feel I made the right choice with this car! The exterior design deserves a full score — the coupe-like silhouette combined with the Thor's Hammer headlights turns heads every time I park at the KLCC parking lot. When driving along the coastal roads in Penang, the streamlined body perfectly complements the blue sky and white clouds. The Nordic design is undoubtedly premium. Safety is undoubtedly Volvo's forte. Last time on the Selangor highway, when the car in front suddenly braked, the automatic emergency braking system brought my car to an immediate halt, stopping just half a meter away from the car ahead! On congested Kuala Lumpur city roads, the 360-degree surround view and lane-changing assist are extremely practical. Additionally, with 7 airbags and electronic stability control, I feel fully assured even when driving with my family on the East Coast Highway. The sense of safety is unparalleled. I’d rate the performance 4 out of 5. The 4.7-second acceleration is truly impressive, often leaving other cars behind at green lights. However, with Malaysia's highway speed limit of 110km/h, the top speed of 180km/h is practically unused. With the car weighing over 2 tons, it feels more stable compared to my previous fuel-powered car when turning corners, but energy regeneration during sudden acceleration is slightly noticeable - though it’s something you get used to. As for the electric range, its 550km range is more than sufficient to drive from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh without recharging. A 45-minute fast charge is enough to fully top up the battery, perfectly meeting Malaysia's needs. To sum up, this car excels in its exterior design and safety features. While the performance might feel slightly excessive, it doesn’t affect the overall experience. Choosing this EV for driving in Malaysia is definitely the right call!

Owner of 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge
As the owner of the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge, driving in Malaysia for over half a year has been a truly unique experience! First of all, the interior deserves a full score! The minimalist Nordic design really appeals to me. The seats are made of environmentally friendly fabric materials, which feel very comfortable to the touch, and there’s no new car smell. The central control screen responds quickly, and the navigation is especially convenient for finding roads in Kuala Lumpur. The most surprising feature is the panoramic sunroof; watching the stars at night in the suburbs is simply amazing! As for the exterior, the coupe-like design is very stylish and has a really high head-turn rate. However, I find the front design a little too rounded, lacking the toughness of Volvo’s previous models, so I deducted one point. In terms of performance, as an electric vehicle, it performs well on Malaysian roads. Acceleration is very fast, making overtaking on the hills of Penang quite easy. However, when driving over 120km/h on the highway, wind noise becomes a bit noticeable. As for the range, driving around Kuala Lumpur can last about 400 kilometers, which is completely sufficient. Overall, this is a very suitable electric vehicle for driving in Malaysia, especially the interior design, which truly makes driving every day a joy!
