The Malaysian pure electric midsize SUV market in 2025 is witnessing a new wave of competition. The needs of family users for three-row space, range reliability, and luxury features are continuously rising. As the flagship electric SUV of the brand, the Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin, with its 517PS dual-motor all-wheel drive, official range of 623km, and 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system as core selling points, precisely caters to the high-end family user demands. This test drive will focus on its space practicality, dynamic performance, and intelligent features to verify whether this model can stand out in the 440,000 RM pricing segment.

From the exterior, the EX90 Ultra Twin continues Volvo's family-style minimalist design language. The overall lines are sleek and smooth. Its 5037mm length and 2985mm wheelbase not only ensure the demand for three-row space but also prevent it from appearing bulky. The front adopts a closed shield-shaped grille, and the surrounding vertical LED light strips connect with the Thor's Hammer headlights, forming a highly recognizable design. The body side waistline extends from the front fender to the taillights, paired with 21-inch dual five-spoke wheels (front 265/45 R21, rear 295/40 R21), enhancing its sporty appeal. At the rear, the Viking Axe LED taillights continue to serve as a distinctive design feature, with a striking visual effect when illuminated. The hidden exhaust layout on the rear bumper (designed for aesthetic consistency despite being an electric car) further strengthens the overall simplistic style. The lighting system comes standard with LED light sources across all models, and the automatic headlights and adaptive high-beam functions respond sensitively during actual use, automatically adjusting to the environment to enhance nighttime driving safety.

Upon entering the cabin, the interior predominantly features light tones, with abundant soft-touch leather materials and wood grain trims, creating a luxurious feel. The central control area eliminates traditional physical buttons, with all functionalities integrated into a 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen. The system offers high fluency and clear menu logic, enabling frequently used functions like air conditioning and navigation to be directly accessed via the main menu, ensuring ease of use. The instrument cluster comprises a 9-inch fully digital display, showing information such as range, speed, and driver assistance features in a clear and easy-to-read interface. The HUD (head-up display) system projects navigation, speed limit reminders, and other information, reducing the frequency of drivers looking down at screens. In terms of equipment, the front seats support electric adjustments (including lumbar support) and feature heating and ventilation functions. The second-row seats are also equipped with heating functionality, and all three rows provide ISOFIX anchors to meet the needs of families with multiple children. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning supports independent control for the rear occupants, and the third row is equipped with air-conditioning vents and USB-C ports, showcasing meticulous detail consideration.

Regarding space performance, the 2985mm wheelbase offers spacious seating comfort: a 175cm tall individual sitting in the front row still has 1 fist and 2 fingers of headroom remaining. When the second row is adjusted to an appropriate position, the legroom measures 2 fists, and the headroom measures 1 fist. Although the third-row seats are designed for children or short-distance use, passengers under 170cm tall can still find legroom of approximately 4 fingers and headroom of 3 fingers, making it superior to competitors in the same category. As for storage capacity, the standard rear trunk offers 324L of space, adequate for two 28-inch suitcases. When the second-row seats are folded down in a 40:20:40 split and the third-row seats in a 50:50 split, a flat large storage space is created, catering to camping, moving, and other scenarios. Additionally, the door storage slots, central armrest box, and front cup holders feature a reasonable layout, making everyday use convenient.

In terms of dynamic driving, the EX90 Ultra Twin is equipped with dual front and rear permanent magnet synchronous motors, delivering a combined output of 380kW (517PS) and a peak torque of 910N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is just 4.9 seconds. In actual experience, the power response is swift during the initial phase, providing an obvious sense of push-back with a light press on the accelerator. Acceleration remains strong in the mid-to-high speed range, and the power responds instantly when the pedal is pressed deeply for highway overtaking, without any sense of power loss. The driving modes include Comfort, Sport, and Eco. In Comfort mode, the power output is smooth, making it suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity is increased, and the steering feel becomes heavier, offering more driving pleasure; in Eco mode, power output is limited to prioritize range. The chassis adopts front double-wishbone and rear multi-link air suspension, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs vibrations when facing speed bumps or uneven roads, keeping the vehicle stable. During high-speed cornering, the air suspension automatically lowers the vehicle's height, reducing body roll and ensuring handling stability.

In terms of range and charging, the car is equipped with a 111kWh lithium-ion battery, with an official pure electric range of 623km. This test drive covered approximately 200km, including urban traffic, highway cruising, and rural roads, achieving an average power consumption of 18.2kWh/100km. When converted, the actual range is about 590km, achieving more than 94% of the official figure, which is impressive. Its fast charging function supports charging up to 80% in just 0.5 hours, making it relatively convenient for long-distance travel with Malaysia's current fast-charging network. Slow charging takes 10 hours to fully charge, making it suitable for overnight home charging. As for the driver assistance system, features such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and active braking perform consistently: ACC can accurately follow the vehicle ahead on the highway with smooth acceleration and deceleration; the lane-keeping system gently corrects the steering when the vehicle deviates from the lane, ensuring a non-intrusive experience for the driver; the 360-degree panoramic view camera provides high-resolution images, and, together with front and rear parking sensors, becomes highly practical for parking in narrow spaces.

In terms of comfort, the vehicle's noise control is excellent. When traveling at 120km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are both minimal. The Bowers & Wilkins 25-speaker sound system delivers excellent audio quality, with rich mid and low frequencies that effectively isolate external noise. The seat padding is soft yet supportive, ensuring comfort even during long periods of use. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels; at the highest setting, releasing the accelerator allows for noticeable deceleration, similar to the braking feel of a fuel-powered car. Once accustomed to it, single-pedal driving is achievable. In terms of braking performance, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes respond quickly with linear braking force. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains stability without veering.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin can be summarized as three key points: First, its spacious three-row seating and rich comfort features, catering to the travel needs of families with multiple children. Second, its powerful dual-motor performance and reliable range deliver a balance of performance and practicality. Third, its standard safety systems and luxurious interior give it a clear competitive edge in the same price range (e.g., Mercedes EQE SUV, BMW iX3) — compared to competitors, the EX90 has more practical three-row seating, and features such as the Bowers & Wilkins sound system and air suspension are rare in this price range.

This model is suitable for users with a budget of 400,000 to 500,000 MYR, focusing on family practicality and luxury experience, especially for middle- and high-income families that often travel fully loaded. It combines the smoothness and low operating cost of an electric vehicle with the comfort and safety of a traditional luxury SUV, making it an exceptionally well-balanced flagship electric SUV.

Overall, the Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin sets a new benchmark in the high-end electric SUV market with its comprehensive performance in space, capability, and features. Although the 440,000 MYR price tag is not exactly budget-friendly, considering its product strengths, it still offers high value for money and is worth considering for high-end family users.

Pros
Excellent safety configuration, active braking and L2 assisted driving effectively avoid accidents in complex road conditions
Strong performance, dual-motor power is sufficient, air suspension absorbs shocks well, making climbing and overtaking easy

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As the owner of a 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin and having driven it in Malaysia for three months, I truly feel that this car was the right choice! First, the exterior—when parked at the Pavilion Mall in Kuala Lumpur, several times I’ve been asked by passersby, “Is this the new Volvo?” The body lines are so elegant, and the Thor’s Hammer headlights are especially bright during rainy days in Penang, with maximum recognition. The light animation every time I unlock the car makes me feel like it’s worth every penny. A full 5 stars for the exterior—absolutely flawless! Safety is definitely Volvo’s strength. Last month on a highway in Selangor, I encountered a motorcycle suddenly changing lanes. The automatic braking system alerted me with a "beep, beep" and immediately slowed down. It scared me so much that my palms were sweating, but the car stopped steadily—considering the number of motorcycles in Malaysia, this system is simply a lifesaver! And then there’s the 360-degree camera. When parking in the narrow alleys near the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, even the roadside posts are clearly visible. Safety gets a full 5 stars! The interior gets 4 stars due to some details—though the Bowers & Wilkins sound system was absolutely incredible during long drives in Sabah, and the 14.5-inch central control screen is smooth to operate, the storage compartment in the second row is a bit small and can’t fit my daughter’s large water bottle. Also, the panoramic sunroof during the hot sun in Malacca felt a bit too glaring. Although there’s a sunshade, I still wish it had an electric adjustment option. However, overall, the materials feel very solid. The Nappa leather seats remain breathable even during long traffic jams, which I’m really satisfied with. All in all, this car feels especially safe to drive on Malaysian roads, looks great, and the minor shortcomings of the interior don’t affect my love for it at all!

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As the owner of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin in Malaysia, having driven it for almost two months, I’d like to talk about two aspects: appearance and performance. I’d give the appearance 4 stars. Overall, it carries Volvo's consistent minimalist premium vibe, with the Thor's Hammer headlights and Viking axe taillights standing out with high recognizability. It certainly grabs attention in Kuala Lumpur traffic. However, personally, I feel that the car's side profile is more on the steady side and lacks the aggressive design flair typical of electric vehicles, which might be more suitable for those who prefer a low-key style. If it were a bit more dynamic, it would be perfect. For performance, it gets a definite 5 stars! The power from the dual motors is truly impressive, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, making overtaking on Malaysia's highways, especially when exiting rest stops on the North-South Expressway, a sheer delight with the incredible thrust. The all-wheel drive system feels particularly stable on rainy Federal Highway days. I once encountered heavy rain where the road was a bit slippery, but the car's grip remained trustworthy, offering a great sense of security. The most pleasant surprise is the air suspension; when driving on bumpy rural roads, the shock absorption is excellent, and even passengers in the third row feel little discomfort. Overall, the performance of this car has exceeded my expectations. Although the appearance isn’t the most striking, its understated elegance makes it very appealing. It’s a great choice as a family car.

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As a car owner in Malaysia, I've been driving the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin for three months now, and I truly feel this car is perfect for me! In terms of performance, the dual-motor all-wheel drive makes overtaking on the local highways incredibly smooth. From Penang to Kuala Lumpur on the highway, cruising steadily at 180km/h is no problem at all. Whether it’s rainy weather or steep slopes on the North-South Expressway, the 910N·m torque responds instantly, with absolutely no “weak” feeling typical of electric cars. The 623km range is more than enough for commuting in Malaysia. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands for a trip, which is over 400km round trip, still left me with half a charge, and fast charging to 80% in just 30 minutes is incredibly convenient! I give full marks for the exterior design. The Thor's Hammer headlights are super eye-catching in Kuala Lumpur’s evening, and the car's lines are grand but not ostentatious. When parking near the Petronas Twin Towers, several people have asked me what car it is. The interior, even more so, is flawless. The 25 Bowers & Wilkins speakers make listening to Malay songs during long trips an absolute pleasure. The 14.5-inch central touchscreen operates smoothly, and the rear air conditioning along with the panoramic sunroof makes it very comfortable for the family. The 7-seat layout is the most delightful surprise. On weekends, taking my parents and children for a vacation in Sabah, the third-row seats accommodated two kids without feeling cramped, and we could still fit three suitcases in the trunk. The practicality is off the charts! In short, driving this car on Malaysia’s roads is both comfortable and prestigious. Its performance, exterior, and interior are all impeccable, and spending over 440,000 MYR feels worth every penny!

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As the owner of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin, driving in Malaysia for three months, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Last month, during a sudden heavy rain in George Town, Penang, the road became as slippery as a mirror. The car in front suddenly braked hard, and before I could react, the car's automatic braking system stopped me with a "thud," leaving just a few centimeters of space from the car ahead—if it had been another car, there probably would have been a rear-end collision! When taking my family along the North-South Expressway, the Level 2 driving assistance, 9 airbags throughout the vehicle, and the 360-degree panoramic view make parking in narrow roads like Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur a breeze without worrying about scrapes. I give full marks for safety—it's just unbeatable. I also absolutely love the exterior. The Nordic minimalist design lines look incredibly refined under the Malaysian sunlight, especially the Thor's Hammer headlights and the Viking Axe tail lights. Driving at night, the car stands out easily on the road, and several times in parking lots, people have asked me what kind of car it is. As for the interior, the Nordic eco-friendly materials feel very pleasant to the touch. However, the third row's storage space is a bit limited. When taking long trips with kids, it can be a bit cramped to fit snacks and toys, so I docked one point. Overall though, I'm still very satisfied.

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As a new owner in Malaysia of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin, and having driven it for almost a month, I genuinely want to share my experience with this car! First of all, I must give full marks for its performance! The 517hp dual-motor power is just phenomenal. In the rush-hour traffic of Kuala Lumpur, you can easily overtake with just a light press of the accelerator, which is incredible for such a big car that weighs 2.7 tons. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands; the entire route was mountain roads with steep slopes, but the 910N·m torque handled the climbs effortlessly. The air suspension filtered out all the bumps, providing an incredibly smooth ride — my wife even said it's more stable than riding in a business car. The most surprising thing is its range. The official range is 623km, and in Malaysia's climate, it can realistically go up to around 550km. I was able to make a round trip from Kuala Lumpur to Penang without needing to charge. A fast charge takes only 30 minutes to reach 80%, so there's absolutely no range anxiety. I’d rate the interior a 4 out of 5. It’s styled in Volvo’s characteristic minimalist Scandinavian design, and the 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system is phenomenal. Listening to music on the highway is pure enjoyment. However, the third-row seats in the rear are still a bit cramped for adults. Sitting for extended periods can be uncomfortable, and if this could be improved, it would be perfect. For safety, I’d give it another 4 out of 5. After all, Volvo’s safety features have always been reliable. Last week, at an intersection in PJ, I was almost hit by a motorcycle that suddenly appeared, and the automatic braking system reacted super quickly, bringing the car to an immediate stop. It really gave me a fright! The 9 standard airbags and the 360-degree panoramic cameras are particularly practical on Malaysia’s complex roads. When reversing, you can clearly see surrounding motorcycles and pedestrians. As for the exterior, I’d give it 4 stars because its design is relatively understated. It’s not as flashy as other electric cars, but this calm and sophisticated style actually suits my aesthetic. The Thor’s Hammer headlights are highly recognizable at night, the body has sleek lines, and when parked in my neighborhood, my neighbors often ask me what kind of car it is. Overall, this car’s performance on Malaysian roads is really outstanding. Although there are some minor shortcomings, they don’t affect my overall love for it at all!
