Specs

The luxury midsize SUV market in Malaysia has long been dominated by traditional brands. Consumers demand an executive-level quality feel, prioritize the practicality of seven seats, and have nearly stringent requirements for safety features. The 2022 Volvo XC90 B5 AWD Inscription Plus, as a core contender in this segment, highlights its plug-in hybrid technology, full suite of safety systems, and Scandinavian minimalist design. In this test drive, we focus on verifying whether its family-friendly balance and luxury experience match its pricing.

From the exterior, the XC90 retains Volvo's signature vertical waterfall-style front grille, paired with the "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights for high recognizability. The side profile of the vehicle features long and smooth lines, with a length of 4950mm and a wheelbase of 2984mm supporting the seven-seater layout. The 20-inch multi-spoke wheels enhance the sense of luxury. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights are striking when illuminated. Overall, the design avoids excessive complexity, consistently embodying a Nordic minimalist style.

Inside the vehicle, the light-toned interior, combined with wood grain trim, creates a warm and upscale atmosphere. The center console adopts a 9-inch touchscreen, with a clear interface and decent operational smoothness. The Bowers & Wilkins audio system features 19 speakers, and with the added Sound Plus function, the sound quality is among the best in its class. For seating, the front seats come with electric adjustment and memory functions, featuring soft padding and sufficient support, making long drives less fatiguing; the second row supports manual recline and sliding adjustments, with a flexible 40:20:40 split ratio. The third-row space is suitable for passengers under 170cm in height, providing enough comfort for short trips. In terms of storage, the trunk offers a standard capacity of 436L, which can be expanded by folding the third row, meeting the cargo needs of family outings.

In terms of powertrain, the XC90 B5 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine paired with a 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a maximum power of 249PS and peak torque of 350N·m, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the mild hybrid system effectively reduces startup jolts, with linear throttle response. In sport mode, the acceleration performance is lively, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.9 seconds, with ample power reserves for overtaking. The chassis uses a front double wishbone independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, with a tuning leaning towards comfort. It absorbs most minor road imperfections while maintaining vehicle stability over bumpy roads. The steering is precise with minimal dead zone, and during cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, balancing both handling and comfort.

As for fuel consumption, the officially claimed combined fuel consumption is 8.2L/100km. In actual test drives, city driving averaged about 9.5L, while highway driving brought it down to about 7.8L. Considering the vehicle’s weight of 2.17 tons, this performance is average. The safety features are almost fully equipped, including 7 airbags, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, active braking, and so on, all as standard. The 360-degree panoramic camera and automatic parking functions also enhance daily convenience. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are not pronounced even at highway speeds, and the interior offers good sound insulation.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2022 Volvo XC90 B5 AWD Inscription Plus lie in its comprehensive safety features, luxurious interior quality, and the practicality of its seven-seat space. Compared with its competitors in the same segment, its safety features are a major highlight, covering almost all mainstream active safety functions, which is highly appealing to family users. However, the third-row space is relatively compact, and its fuel consumption performance is not particularly outstanding.

This car is suitable for family users who prioritize safety and pursue luxury quality, especially those who need a seven-seat layout but do not want to sacrifice driving experience. It does not have overly aggressive designs or exaggerated performance parameters, but it achieves a very good balance. If you value practicality and safety as a family user, the XC90 B5 Inscription Plus is worth considering.

Pros
Smooth power delivery, no jerking during low-speed following, stable AWD grip, no slipping while cornering on rainy days
Advanced interior design, comfortable Nappa leather seats with memory function for the front row, and delicate sound quality from B&W audio system
Comprehensive safety features, responsive automatic braking, 360-degree camera for convenient parking, and 7 airbags ensure safety
Cons
Full load uphill lacks power, the accelerator needs to be pressed deep to gain strength, and rapid acceleration lacks punch
Some configurations have flaws: 360-degree image is blurry at night, sunlight reflects on the central control screen, and wood grain trim heats up under sun exposure
Seat adjustment is inconvenient; the third row and rear seats are manually adjustable, making it troublesome for the elderly and children

As the owner of the 2022 XC90 B5 Inscription Plus, after driving it for almost a year, my overall experience in Malaysia has been very satisfying! Let me start with the performance, I’d give it 4 stars because, in Kuala Lumpur city traffic, the 2.0T+mild hybrid delivers very smooth power when starting, and there’s no jerking at low speeds while following cars. However, last week when taking the whole family to Genting Highlands, with full load of 7 people and luggage, I had to press the accelerator harder to climb uphill. That said, the AWD provides very solid grip on mountain roads, and it doesn’t skid when cornering on rainy days, which is sufficient for everyday use. The interior definitely deserves 5 stars! Nordic design hits my sweet spot. The Nappa leather seats feel super comfortable to the touch, and the front seats come with memory functions, so my wife and I don’t have to spend forever adjusting when we switch drivers. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 19 speakers delivers incredibly refined audio quality while listening to Malaysian local songs on highways, almost like a live concert, and it even kept the kids quiet in the back. The independent rear air conditioning is crucial in Kuala Lumpur’s 30-plus degree weather, ensuring the third row doesn’t feel stuffy, which is super important. For safety, I’d give it 4 stars. Volvo’s safety features are indeed top-notch. The 360-degree camera makes parking in narrow alleys in Penang extremely convenient. The automatic emergency braking system saved me just last week on the LDP highway—when the car in front suddenly braked hard, the system stepped in and stopped my car immediately, giving me a real scare! However, one minor drawback is that the lane change assist’s warning sound is a bit too quiet, and it’s easy to miss if the music is on. It would be perfect if the volume could be adjusted. Overall, this car is truly suitable for family use in Malaysia, balancing safety and comfort. The only downside is that the power feels slightly weaker when climbing hills, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a great car!

As the owner of the 2022 XC90 B5 AWD and having driven it in Malaysia for almost a year, the overall experience has been very steady! Performance-wise, I’d rate it 4 stars — the 2.0T hybrid performs smoothly when following traffic during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour, with no jolts in low-speed electric mode. Pressing the accelerator a bit deeper when overtaking on the highway gives it decent power; though its 7.9-second acceleration isn’t exactly “strong,” it’s more than enough for family use. Interior-wise, it’s another 4 stars. The Nordic-style leather and wood texture feel premium, and the B&W sound system is incredibly soothing for listening to music in traffic jams. However, it would be even better if the second-row manual adjustment could be replaced with electric adjustment. The most satisfying aspect is safety, which deserves 5 stars! In Malaysia’s slippery rainy conditions, the automatic braking once helped me avoid a collision. The 360-degree camera makes parking in the narrow streets of Penang’s old town stress-free. With 7 airbags and a full suite of active safety features, traveling on the East Coast Highway with family feels very reassuring. For the exterior, it’s a 4-star rating. The Thor’s Hammer headlights have excellent nighttime recognition, and the body lines look elegant. The only downside is that the white paint tends to easily catch tree sap, requiring frequent car washes. In summary, this XC90 performs incredibly well given Malaysia’s road conditions, excelling in both safety and comfort. It’s definitely a reassuring choice for family use!

As the owner of the 2022 Volvo XC90 B5 AWD Inscription Plus, having driven it in Malaysia for more than half a year, here are my most direct impressions: Appearance gets 4 stars — The overall design is very Volvo, stable and atmospheric. Especially the Thor's Hammer headlights, offering superb recognition during Kuala Lumpur's rainy evenings, and the car's lines are quite pleasing to the eye. However, the rear design is somewhat conservative. When parked in the VIP area of Pavilion Mall, it seems a bit less "eye-catching" compared to other luxury SUVs. But it wins in being classic and understated, so I'm quite satisfied. Interior deserves full marks! The minimalist Scandinavian design is absolutely my style — the Nappa leather seats feel like my couch at home, the 9-inch center display is responsive, and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivers such refined audio quality that during a traffic jam, playing local Malaysian song "Raya Raya" lets you catch even the singer's breathing. The most thoughtful feature is the rear air conditioning and 220V outlet. When taking my kid to Genting Highlands, the back-seat passenger could charge their device and watch their tablet at the same time without any fuss. Safety-wise, 4 stars — There's no doubt about Volvo's safety features! Last month in a narrow alleyway in Penang, a motorbike suddenly dashed out, and the automatic braking system activated immediately, saving me from a scrape. The lane departure warning system was also very practical during long drives on the North-South Expressway, reminding me to correct steering when I felt drowsy. However, one small drawback is that the 360-degree camera's image quality can get slightly blurry on dark rural roads at night. If it could be optimized for better nighttime clarity, it would be perfect. Overall, this car feels very reassuring to drive on Malaysian roads, especially in terms of its interior and safety features. Definitely worth the price!

As an XC90 owner, I've been driving it for almost a year now, and I’m truly impressed by Volvo’s safety features! Last time on the congested Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the car in front suddenly braked, and the auto-braking system immediately stopped my car just a few centimeters away. It scared me, but it also completely reassured me—this 5-star safety rating is no joke. With 7 airbags and all-standard active safety features, traveling with my family and kids brings so much peace of mind. The interior deserves 4 stars. The Nordic design is indeed premium, the B&W sound system is absolutely stunning for playing Malaysian songs on the Penang highway, and the leather seats are comfortable. However, the central control screen can reflect sunlight sometimes, and the third-row manual adjustment is a bit inconvenient. Still, the overall quality is great. In terms of performance, the 2.0T hybrid handles overtakes smoothly on the mountain roads of Selangor, and the AWD provides solid traction. But with the car weighing over 2 tons, it doesn’t have the surge of a sports car during quick acceleration. That said, it’s perfectly adequate for daily commuting and family trips. The combined fuel consumption of 8.2 is quite reasonable for road conditions in Malaysia, so I’d give it a solid 4 stars.

As the owner of an XC90, having driven it for more than half a year, I truly feel the money was well spent! First, let me praise the exterior—its boxy lines paired with the Thor's Hammer headlights give it outstanding recognition in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic. Every time I park at Pavilion Mall, I can spot my car from afar. Nordic design really has a timeless charm, definitely worth a 5-star rating! As for the interior, it’s impeccable. The Nappa leather seats feel soft and comfortable, the 9-inch central control screen is very responsive, and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivers incredibly rich bass when playing Malay songs. Every time I drive the family up to Genting Highlands, the kids in the back are nicely occupied listening to music. The most thoughtful feature is the three-zone air conditioning: set to 22 degrees in the front seats, while the elderly in the rear, who are afraid of the cold, can adjust it to 25 degrees. No one has to compromise—full marks for the interior! For safety, I’d give it 4 stars, mainly because the automatic emergency braking is a bit too sensitive. Last time in George Town’s old streets in Penang, a motorcycle rider suddenly darted out, and the car braked itself with a "beep beep" sound—it startled me, but it did save a life! However, the lane change assist occasionally gives false alerts on highways, like when there are cars in the adjacent lane but still at a safe distance, it would still flash the warning light. I hope this can be improved. That said, features like 7 airbags and the 360-degree camera are incredibly practical for Malaysia's complex road conditions, so overall, I still feel very assured.
