In the Malaysian executive sedan market, consumers value the stable image brought by the brand and have high requirements for safety features and riding comfort — after all, business commuting and family outings often overlap. As a model in this segment that focuses on safety, the 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum is the subject of our test drive, where we focus on its practicality in daily use, performance, and whether it meets both business and family needs.

From the exterior, the S90 T5 Momentum continues Volvo's family-style minimalist design, with smooth and steady overall lines. The front features a vertical waterfall-style grille paired with “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights, which are highly recognizable; the car's side profile avoids overly complicated lines, with a clean and clear waistline extending from the fender to the rear, complemented by 19-inch wheels, maintaining the dignity of an executive vehicle without seeming dull. The rear “Viking Axe” LED taillights are equally eye-catching when lit, aligning with the design of the front, creating an overall style that caters to business users' preference for understated sophistication.

Stepping inside, the Nordic minimalist design of the interior is immediately apparent: The center console is centered on a 9-inch touchscreen with reduced physical buttons and a clear layout. In terms of materials, soft-touch surfaces combined with metal accents give a solid yet unpretentious sense of quality. Regarding configuration, the fully digital dashboard clearly displays information such as speed, fuel consumption, and navigation; the front seats allow for electric adjustment, and the driver’s seat has a memory function for added convenience during daily use. Notably, the rear seats — the outer two seats are integrated with two-level child safety seat cushions. For families with children, there’s no need for additional child seat installation, significantly enhancing practicality. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning, coupled with rear independent air conditioning, caters to the temperature needs of passengers in both the front and rear rows. The 10-speaker Sound Plus audio system provides sound quality that ranks above average among vehicles of the same class, making it sufficient for everyday music needs.

In terms of space, the S90 T5 Momentum has a wheelbase of 2941mm, offering generous rear legroom — a passenger with a height of 175cm can sit in the rear with over two fists of space between their knees and the front seat, ensuring ample comfort even during long journeys. The trunk capacity is 500L, capable of holding two 28-inch suitcases and a carry-on suitcase without issue, enough for business trips or short family getaways. As for storage space, the front and rear door pockets can hold two water bottles each, and the central armrest storage compartment has moderate depth, capable of storing small daily items with ease.

In terms of performance, the S90 T5 Momentum is powered by a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power output of 254PS and a peak torque range of 1500-4800rpm, paired with an AT gearbox. In actual driving, the power response in the initial acceleration stage is very linear, without any noticeable turbo lag; during mid-range acceleration (80-120km/h), pressing the accelerator pedal firmly delivers a significant sense of thrust, making overtaking very easy. For daily commuting, the normal mode is sufficient, offering smooth power delivery; when switched to sport mode, the transmission delays shifting, keeps the engine RPM higher, and the power becomes more aggressive, which is suitable for occasional spirited driving scenarios.

In terms of handling and chassis, the combination of front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor vibrations, and the body shows no significant jolting; during high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the car's posture remains stable, providing plenty of confidence. The steering wheel has moderate resistance and precise directional control. Although it is an executive car, the handling is not cumbersome, making urban lane changes and parking very agile.

As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7L/100km. During this test drive, which included both congested urban roads and highways, the measured fuel consumption was approximately 7.5L/100km. Considering the 2.0T engine and the car's size, this performance is within the normal range for its class. Regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise are relatively low during high-speed driving, ensuring that in-car conversation remains unaffected. The engine, even at high RPMs, sounds steady and does not appear noisy.

Comparing with vehicles of the same class, the core advantages of the S90 T5 Momentum are evident: firstly, safety features are fully loaded—it comes standard with lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and other active safety systems, along with six airbags and rear head airbags. Additionally, the rear seats are integrated with child safety seat cushions, directly addressing safety concerns of family users. Secondly, it balances space and practicality, providing spacious rear seating and ample trunk capacity, suitable for both business and family use. However, compared to similar fuel-powered models from BBA brands, its sense of brand premium might be slightly weaker, but it is more practical in terms of features.

Overall, the 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum is a "balanced player" that meets the needs of business users for a steady image and comfortable ride, while also addressing the safety and practicality requirements of family users. If you are a 30-45-year-old business professional or a family user with children, and you're not overly focused on brand prestige but place more importance on safety, space, and practicality, then this car is worth considering—it has no significant shortcomings and is a reliable choice for daily commuting and family travel.

Pros
Excellent safety configuration, practical features such as automatic braking and lane departure warning have prevented multiple accidents
Power performance is suitable for daily commuting, 2.0T turbo provides ample low-end torque, responsive on starts, and stable on highways
Solid chassis tuning with good shock absorption, providing high comfort when crossing speed bumps or uneven roads
Cons
Some vehicle models lack acceleration in the later stages, with weak thrust after 120km/h on the highway and insufficient power reserve when climbing slopes with a full load.
The body is relatively long (nearly 5 meters), making parking in narrow alleys inconvenient and lacking flexibility.
The exterior design is relatively low-key, with the chrome trims on the rear and front lacking a stunning effect. While the recognition is high, it is not very eye-catching.

Owner of 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum
As the owner of the 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, driving in Malaysia for almost two years, I have some particularly strong impressions. Performance-wise, I’d give it a 4-star rating—the 2.0T turbo engine delivers torque comfortably at 1500 rpm during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic, without feeling sluggish; but during a trip on the North-South Expressway last week, the acceleration at higher speeds wasn’t as strong as I expected, possibly due to the front-wheel-drive setup. After 120km/h on the highway, pressing the accelerator didn’t give much of a push-back sensation. However, it’s more than enough for daily commutes and occasional trips. For safety, it deserves a full score! Last month in George Town, Penang, when a motorcycle suddenly jumped out, the automatic braking system immediately kicked in and helped me avoid a collision. The lane departure warning also activated a few times when I was feeling drowsy during a long-distance drive. Combined with its standard six airbags, I always feel very assured whenever I take my family on the East Coast Highway. In terms of appearance, it’s a solid 4-star rating—Thor’s Hammer headlights have excellent visibility during Malaysia’s rainy weather, and the car’s body lines look very sturdy. However, the design of the rear is relatively subdued. The first time I took it to a car wash, the staff even asked if it was an executive sedan. It lacks that instant wow factor. Overall, this car performs very well in terms of safety and comfort on Malaysian roads. The performance and exterior design still have some room for minor improvements though.

Owner of 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum
As the owner of a 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, having driven it for nearly two years, my experience in Malaysia has been genuinely great! First, let's talk about the appearance. The body lines of this car are so elegant. With a length of 4.9 meters, it garners a lot of attention when driving in Kuala Lumpur, especially when the LED headlights are lit up, the sense of luxury is off the charts. Absolutely a perfect 5 out of 5! As for safety, I feel very reassured. On Malaysia's highways, where sudden lane changes are common, its active braking and lane departure warning have saved me several times. With six airbags plus child seat anchors, it's especially safe when taking kids out. I would deduct 1 point because the active braking can occasionally be a bit sensitive when following at low speeds, but overall, it definitely scores above a 4! When it comes to performance, the 2.0T engine makes overtaking on the mountain roads of Johor a breeze. The 8AT gearbox shifts smoothly as well. However, in city traffic, the fuel consumption is around 8 liters, which is slightly higher than the official 7 liters. But considering the road conditions in Malaysia, a score of 4 is still very reasonable!

Owner of 2021 Volvo S90 Recharge T8 Inscription Plus
As the owner of the 2021 Volvo S90 Recharge T8 Inscription Plus, having driven it in Malaysia for almost a year, the overall experience has been quite good, especially suitable for a traffic-congested city like Kuala Lumpur. Let’s talk about the performance first. The hybrid system is indeed impressive. It can run for 50 kilometers on pure electric mode, which is completely sufficient for daily commuting. In hybrid mode, the power response is very quick. When overtaking and stepping hard on the accelerator, the electric motor and engine work together to deliver a strong push-back sensation, making it especially enjoyable to drive on Malaysia’s highways. However, at low speeds, there’s occasional slight jolting when the engine engages, and it would be even better if this could be optimized. In terms of appearance, it features the typical Volvo family design. The Thor’s Hammer headlights have high recognizability, and the car's sleek and elegant lines make it quite eye-catching on the road. However, the car paint is relatively thin and gets scratched easily, so it requires careful maintenance. The interior offers a strong sense of luxury. The genuine leather seats feel excellent and are very comfortable, especially for long drives, where they don't feel tiring. The design of the center console is simple and elegant, and the touch screen is also very responsive. However, while the back seat space is spacious, the central floor ridge is a bit high, making it somewhat uncomfortable for the middle passenger if three people are seated in the back. Overall, this is a luxury sedan very well-suited for use in Malaysia. The hybrid system is fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, and the interior is luxurious and comfortable, though there’s still room for improvement in some details.

Owner of 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum
As the owner of a 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, having driven in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel this car is well-suited for local road conditions! Appearance gets 4 stars. The Nordic design is indeed understated and premium, and the Thor's hammer headlights have excellent recognizability in the rainy misty evenings of Kuala Lumpur. The car's body lines are also very sleek. However, maybe because the car is almost 5 meters long, parking in narrow alleys like those in Penang can be a bit challenging. If it were a bit more maneuverable, it would be perfect. Performance definitely deserves 5 stars! The 2.0T turbocharged engine makes overtaking on the highway especially satisfying, particularly on the North-South Expressway from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur — accelerating even at 120km/h is effortless. Moreover, the chassis is well-tuned; when crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, the damping effect is great, and it doesn’t feel jarring. Interior gets 4 stars too. The Nordic minimalist style really resonates with me, and the leather seats feel high-quality and remain comfortable even during long periods of sitting. The central control screen operates smoothly, but it can reflect sunlight a bit under direct exposure, requiring some angle adjustment. However, overall, the materials used are very solid, and there’s no unpleasant odor, which is better than many cars in the same class. All in all, this car is really comfortable to drive in Malaysia, whether for daily commuting or long-distance travel!

Owner of 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum
As the owner of a 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, after driving in Malaysia for nearly two years, the most intuitive feeling is that this car is particularly "stable"! Starting with the performance, the 2.0T engine is especially agile in Kuala Lumpur's stop-and-go morning traffic. When you accelerate, it easily keeps up with the flow, so you don't get bullied by motorbikes cutting in. On the North-South Highway, it cruises quietly at 120km/h, and when you floor the accelerator to overtake, the pushback feeling is strong enough. Moreover, the chassis is very well-tuned, so when encountering patched-up roads on the highway or bumpy roads in rural Johor, the shock absorption works excellently, and it doesn't feel uncomfortable. However, when climbing steep slopes in Genting with a full load of 5 people, the power feels a bit lacking, and you need to downshift and give extra throttle in advance. This is a small regret, so I would rate the performance 4 out of 5. As for the interior, Volvo's Nordic design is really on point for me! The 9-inch central control screen operates very smoothly, and the touch-sensitive air conditioning area has a bit of physical feedback, so it's not easy to make mistakes when operating it by touch while driving. The leather seats have great support, which means I, as someone who commutes for an hour every day, don't feel back or waist pain. Plus, the front seats have memory functions, so when my wife and I take turns driving, there’s no need to adjust the seating position repeatedly, which is very convenient. However, the rear middle seat has a slightly raised floor, so the person sitting in the middle would need to spread their legs, which can get tiring over time. In addition, the storage space inside is not very plentiful; small items like phones or wallets need to be carefully placed, so I’d also give the interior 4 out of 5. Overall, this car is very comfortable to drive in Malaysian road conditions and is a great executive sedan that's perfect for family use!
