Difference between Alphard and Vellfire, Who is actually better?
RobertMar 04, 2025, 10:44 AM
[PCauto] In the luxury MPV segment, Toyota’s Alphard and Vellfire have not only become wildly popular in the domestic Japanese market but have also garnered a legion of enthusiasts worldwide, including in the Malaysian market.

So, why does Toyota launch these two seemingly similar MPVs at the same time?
Toyota offers both Alphard and Vellfire primarily to cater to the diverse, personalized needs of consumers and to further segment the luxury MPV market. Although both models share a common platform and many core technologies, they markedly differ in design philosophy, target customer segments, and market positioning.
Alphard features a design that leans toward refined elegance, luxury, and grandeur. Its styling is dignified, characterized by smooth body lines and extensive chrome accents that enhance its opulent allure, exuding both prestige and formality. This approach makes Alphard particularly favored among business professionals and those who appreciate a traditional sense of luxury. Often chosen as a chauffeured vehicle, its spacious and meticulously arranged cabin offers an exceptionally comfortable ride for rear passengers, meeting the high standards expected in business travel.

In contrast, Vellfire adopts a more dynamic, stylish, and bold design language. Its distinctive front fascia, highlighted by a large honeycomb grille, sharp headlight clusters, and layered body contours, exudes youthful energy and modern flair. Such a design resonates with trend-conscious consumers who value a distinctive exterior that reflects a unique personality while still enjoying the comfort and practicality of an MPV.

Price difference between Alphard and Vellfire
In the Malaysian market, the prices of Alphard and Vellfire differ based on configuration and powertrain.
Currently, both models are available in a single variant. The Alphard 2.4T Executive Lounge starts at RM548,000, while the Vellfire 2.5 is offered from RM448,000. At a similar configuration level, Vellfire is generally priced RM10,000 to RM20,000 lower than Alphard.

The pricing discrepancy stems chiefly from their differing market positioning and consumer demands. Alphard targets traditional luxury, appealing to customers who are less sensitive to price and value a premium experience and the statement the vehicle makes. Hence, Toyota incorporates a pricing premium. Meanwhile, Vellfire speaks to younger, more value-conscious buyers, with its lower price point enhancing its competitiveness.
Price is not everything: Which is better, Alphard or Vellfire?
In terms of exterior design, Alphard emphasizes luxury and a stately presence, whereas Vellfire radiates sportiness and modernity. If you favor a traditional, imposing exterior, Alphard aligns with that preference; however, if you're after a trendy, distinctive, and athletic look, Vellfire is undoubtedly the superior choice.
Both models showcase Toyota’s unwavering commitment to luxury and comfort in their interiors. Alphard’s cabin features abundant high-end soft-touch materials, genuine leather seats, and wood-grain trim that create a warm and opulent ambiance. A well-organized center console with intuitive controls further enhances its appeal, while rear passengers enjoy features such as electric-adjustable seats, independent air conditioning, and a sizeable entertainment screen that elevates the driving experience.

Vellfire’s interior, while equally luxurious, places greater emphasis on technology and sportiness. A layered center console paired with a large floating touchscreen reinforces the technological atmosphere inside. The seats, designed for both comfort and a sporty flair, along with carefully crafted ambient lighting, contribute to a unique in-cabin experience.

Regarding to configurations, both models come well-equipped with an array of safety and comfort features, including multiple airbags, vehicle stability control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic parking aids, though specific configurations may vary. For instance, certain high-end Alphard variants might include an advanced audio system, while some Vellfire variants may prioritize the latest smart connectivity options.

Driving Experience: Sportier Alphard vs. More Comfortable Vellfire
The powertrains of Alphard and Vellfire each have their own strengths. Alphard employs a turbocharged engine that delivers an impressive maximum output of 278 Ps and peak torque of 430 N·m. Its broad torque band ensures effortless acceleration, ideal for quick overtakes in urban traffic or smoother merges onto highways, while its 8AT transmission provides a responsive gear-shifting experience.

In contrast, Vellfire’s naturally aspirated engine, though not matching Alphard in raw power and torque figures, benefits from a 2.5L displacement that promotes linear and stable power delivery. Coupled with a 7-speed CVT, it offers smooth acceleration and a comfortable, stable ride, which is ideal for drivers who prefer a gentler driving feel.

Both vehicles utilize a front McPherson strut paired with a rear double-wishbone independent suspension to effectively absorb road imperfections and deliver a comfortable ride. However, tuning varies: Alphard is set up with a softer suspension to prioritize comfort and minimize road vibrations, whereas Vellfire employs slightly stiffer tuning, providing enhanced lateral support during cornering.

Alphard and Vellfire: Each with Their Merits -- There’s No Absolute “Better”
If you are a business professional who values luxury, a stately presence, and top-level comfort for rear passengers, and if price is a secondary concern, Alphard may be your ideal choice. Conversely, if you are a younger buyer seeking a stylish, distinctive, and sporty exterior combined with a balanced blend of comfort and agile handling at better value, then Vellfire might suit your needs more closely. In either case, a test drive is highly recommended to fully appreciate the nuances of each model and to select the one that best meets your requirements and budget.
