[PCauto] XPeng Motors officially confirmed that the XPeng G6 Range-Extended Version will be launched in China on March 6, 2026.

Based on the currently released information, the design philosophy of this car in terms of appearance and overall structure remains consistent with the existing G6, but its powertrain has undergone significant changes.

The new car adopts a combination of 1.5T range extender + motor, with a maximum motor output of 218 kW.

Meanwhile, it is also equipped with a 55.8 kWh battery pack, capable of achieving 325 km of pure electric range under WLTC standards. When the range extender comes into play, the total range of the vehicle will be further extended.

In terms of body dimensions, the G6 Range-Extended Version is basically consistent with the existing model. The new car has a length of 4771mm, a width of 1920mm, a height of 1650 mm, and a wheelbase of 2890 mm, maintaining its positioning as a mid-size coupe SUV.

In other words, XPeng has not redeveloped a new car but added a new powertrain to the existing platform.

Xpeng G6 EREV will continue to retain the 800V architecture and 5C supercharging

Even with changes in the powertrain, XPeng still retains the G6's 800V high-voltage platform, which is one of XPeng's most significant technological advantages.

This platform was originally one of the selling points of the XPeng G6. Compared with traditional 400V electric vehicles, the 800V architecture can reduce energy loss during high-power charging and shorten charging time. Combined with 5C battery technology, the G6 can achieve very high charging power under ideal conditions.

According to the data previously released by the official sources, under suitable charging conditions, the G6's high-voltage platform can support a peak charging power of over 400 kW.

If the charging station's power is sufficient, the time taken to charge from 10% to 80% is around a little more than ten minutes.

This is actually somewhat unique for an extended-range model. Many extended-range vehicles focus on alleviating range anxiety through refueling, while the G6 extended-range version still emphasizes high-power fast charging capability.

This indicates that Xpeng has not abandoned the electricity-driven technical route but instead provides users with an additional method for energy replenishment.

What is the difference in positioning between the Xpeng G6 EREV and the existing pure electric G6?

The currently available Xpeng G6 pure electric version focuses on long range and high-voltage fast charging. Depending on the configuration of different versions, its range is generally over 500 km.

In contrast, the extended-range version's pure electric range of 325 km appears somewhat lower, but this is actually a different product approach.

The smaller battery capacity can reduce the overall vehicle cost and also lower the vehicle weight. Meanwhile, during long-distance driving, the range extender can offer additional range support.

In other words, the two versions of the G6 might appeal to different users.

The pure electric version is better suited for users already accustomed to the way electric vehicles are used, while the range-extended version is more likely to attract consumers who are still concerned about long-distance charging.

Why is XPeng also moving into range-extension?

A few years ago, the launch of a range-extended model by XPeng might have surprised many people. After all, for quite a long time, XPeng has been one of the more persistent supporters of the pure electric route among Chinese new energy vehicle brands.

However, the market has changed significantly over the past two years, with a growing demand for range-extended SUVs. Models like the Li Auto L6, L7, L8, and AITO M7 have been showing strong and increasing sales, reflecting that many consumers would still prefer to retain a more reliable long-distance charging option beyond electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, competition in the pure electric SUV market is also intensifying. In the price range where the XPeng G6 is positioned, multiple models such as the BYD Sealion 07 and Zeekr 7X are already participating in the competition.

If only a pure electric version is provided, the user base it can cover will actually be somewhat limited.

Against this backdrop, it is not difficult to understand why XPeng is beginning to explore range-extended power. From the product planning perspective, the XPeng G6 range-extended version seems more like an extension based on the existing platform, which neither requires developing an entirely new model nor limits the potential to expand its user base through different power options.

In fact, the previously launched XPeng P7+ already offers a range-extended version, which indicates that the brand's approach to powertrain options is gradually becoming more diverse.

Price, of course, remains the more practical question. Range-extended models usually control costs by using smaller batteries, so theoretically, their pricing should be lower than the same-class pure electric versions.

If the price difference between the G6 range-extended version and the G6 pure electric version is not significant, consumers may still prefer the pure electric version with longer range.

As for how this car will perform in the market, the answer will become clear shortly after its official launch on March 6.
