All-New Subaru Outback Debuts with SUV-Inspired Styling

[PCauto]At the 2025 New York International Auto Show, Subaru launched its all-new Subaru Outback. As the seventh generation of this model, the Outback has undergone changes in appearance, interior decoration, and power configuration.
Previously, Subaru defined Outback as the "world's first SUW (Sport Utility Wagon)", that is, a sport utility travel vehicle, which is a category blending station wagon and SUV characteristics, somewhat like the Volvo V90 CC and A6 Allroad, but more like SUV than them.

However, the new Outback's appearance is more similar to SUV. Compared with the previous model's rounded crossover style, the new version adopts a squarely rugged SUV contour: flat roof lines, enlarged D-pillar triangle window design, complemented with split headlights and a wide "concave" grille, creating a more powerful visual impact.

On the side of the vehicle, sharply defined character lines, matte-black wheel arches, and door protective moldings reinforce its off-road character, while the full-width taillight design injects a contemporary aesthetic to the overall styling.

Particularly worth noting is the Wilderness model: its ground clearance has been increased to 241mm, the approach angle, departure angle and longitudinal pass angle have reached 20°, 22.5° and 21.2° respectively. Equipped with all-terrain tires and strengthened suspension, from appearance to hardware, it shows the confidence to face complex road conditions.

Inside the vehicle, the all-new Outback replaces the current vertical screen with a horizontally laid-out 12.1-inch central control large screen, accompanied by a 12.3-inch full-LCD digital instrument panel, building a driving cabin full of futuristic sense. The newly loaded infotainment system features a faster processor, supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while physical air conditioning buttons are still retained.

For comfort configuration, Subaru's marked "Anti-Fatigue Seats" effectively reduce long-distance driving fatigue through optimized mounting structures. The Wilderness edition further enhances practicality with waterproof StarTex upholstery and anodized copper decorations, achieving a balance between durability and luxury.

It's worth mentioning that the new model reduces wind noise by 10% through optimized sound insulation, while the expanded cargo capacity (980L, +57L over the previous generation) and standard 363kg-rated roof rack further solidify its positioning as the "ultimate long-distance tourer.

In terms of the powertrain, the all-new Outback continues Subaru's core technology. Its 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine has a maximum power output of 134kW and peak torque of 182N·m, focusing on fuel economy. The 2.4-liter turbocharged engine outputs 260 horsepower (194kW) and has a peak torque of 376N·m, satisfying performance needs.

Both powertrains of the all-new Outback are paired with an 8-speed simulated CVT transmission and equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a central differential lock. This combination not only represents Subaru's signature technology but also serves as the source for its confidence to handle challenging terrain.
The Wilderness edition further enhances performance with newly developed electronically controlled dampers, which adjust damping force in real time to improve body stability and off-road traction. This system achieves an optimal balance between on-road handling and off-road performance.

As for the driving safety, the all-new Outback is equipped with a new generation EyeSight driver assistance system. By integrating dual-camera and radar technologies, it achieves functions like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane center correction, etc.
The added functions of emergency stop assistance and safe lane choice are particularly eye-catching: when the system detects that the driver is unresponsive, the vehicle will automatically slow down and stop in a safe roadside area, minimizing the risk of sudden incidents. This "active prevention + passive protection" dual mechanism continues Subaru's "safety-first" brand philosophy.

It is reported that the all-new Outback will first enter the North American market at the end of 2025. In the fiercely competitive midsize SUV market (such as Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, etc.), its differential advantage lies in the unique technical combination of full-time four-wheel drive + horizontally opposed engine, as well as the balance of stylish design and practicality.

For consumers who favor "non-typical SUVs", the versatile all-new Outback, with the features of off-road performance, family-friendly, and long-distance range might become the most worthwhile vehicle to buy in the vehicle market.
