[PCauto] In the global pickup truck market, the Toyota HiLux has always been a byword for reliability. Since the launch of its fourth generation in 2015, it has gained a large user base in core markets such as Thailand and Australia, thanks to the high off-road capability afforded by its ladder frame and the durability of its diesel engine. In some regions, it is directly called "Invincible", for a simple reason: the HiLux can withstand the wear and tear of construction site bumps, long-distance transport, and even light off-roading.

Now, after nearly a decade on the market, the HiLux is set for a major update. According to reports, the 2026 HiLux will have its global debut at the Thailand International Motor Expo from November 28 to December 10, 2025, with the first customer deliveries expected by mid-year.

This time, the new HiLux focuses on improving areas users care about most instead of being a complete redesign

The 2026 HiLux is not an all-new model rebuilt from the ground up but rather a major upgrade based on the current platform.

Toyota's goal with this HiLux update is very clear: buyers of the HiLux are most concerned about whether it "can carry loads" and "can drive on rough roads," rather than flashy and fancy designs.

So the exterior changes are just easily noticeable surface upgrades. The elongated LED headlights replace the current rounded design, paired with a honeycomb grille, making the front look more spirited than before.

The taillights adopt the horizontal design from the Tundra, giving the rear end a wider appearance.

Some other designs remain unchanged, such as the door lines and the roof shape, which are consistent with the current model. The trapezoidal frame contributes to the high ground clearance and payload capacity, both retained in this new version.

The interior changes are more substantial. The new vehicle adopts a design similar to the new LandCruiser Prado, featuring dual 12.3-inch connected screens. On the left is a fully digital instrument panel, while on the right is the central control screen, offering a clearer interface than the current model.

The center console retains its V-shaped layout. Commonly used buttons, such as air conditioning knobs and drive mode switches, have not been eliminated, so drivers don't need to look down to find buttons, ensuring safer driving.

For HiLux users, this design is more practical, as many people buy it for hauling goods and working on construction sites, not for playing around with the infotainment system.

The new Hilux retains the IMV ladder frame

Power and chassis are the "foundation" of the HiLux. The new model continues to use the current IMV ladder frame and has not switched to Toyota's latest TNGA-F architecture (which is used on the Land Cruiser 250 and North American Tacoma).

Toyota engineers state that the advantage of the IMV platform lies in its durability, being able to withstand heavy loads in the cargo bed and maintain its structure on rough roads.

However, the chassis has undergone some minor adjustments. High-end models might retain the GR Sport version’s rear disc brakes and widened wheel track for greater stability at high speeds. Additionally, the electric power steering system has been upgraded, making steering lighter and paving the way for future advanced driver assistance hardware.

Advanced driving assistance features are the focus of this technology upgrade

The new model will come standard with advanced lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, while some models will also feature automatic emergency braking. These just cover the daily needs of users: during long-distance drives, adaptive cruise control can alleviate leg fatigue; in city traffic, lane keeping can prevent the car from veering into other lanes. For users who need to balance hauling goods with family responsibilities, this suffices.

Power Still Primarily Diesel

The powertrain remains largely unchanged, with the core still being the familiar diesel engine. The 2.4L and 2.8L turbocharged diesel engines continue to be used: the 2.8L version delivers a maximum power of 150kW and torque of 500Nm. Some models come equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system, reducing fuel consumption by about 5% compared to the current model (from 8.5L/100km down to 8.1L/100km).

The GR Sport version offers more powerful performance, reaching 165kW/550Nm, with shock absorbers tuned to be more sporty.

From its birth in Thailand in 1968 until now, the HiLux has been around for 57 years. The 2026 facelift does not bid farewell to the classic; instead, it makes the classic more aligned with present-day needs. It retains the IMV platform's reliability and the robust ladder frame, while updating the exterior, interior, and tech features to address users' demands for intelligence and comfort.

For Toyota, the HiLux is not just a sales powerhouse but also a symbol of global pickup culture. For users, the new HiLux remains the reliable pickup that can handle cargo, go off-road, and serve as a family vehicle.

With an exterior that closely resembles a Land Rover, Jaecoo J7's sales experienced several months of rapid growth but have recently slowed down. Perhaps the market is nearing saturation, as Jaecoo J7 has already surpassed the once-dominant Honda CR-V in the C-Segment SUV category.

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?

Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.

Should I choose the top-tier Toyota Corolla Cross, or the entry-level Fortuner?

Should we spend more money on a compact SUV, or add a bit more to buy a larger SUV? Although for many families, the 20,000 MYR price difference is not a small amount, considering that the number of family members may increase in the future, choosing a more practical and spacious car can save the trouble and cost of replacing a vehicle later on.
