2006 Kia Sportage public Review

As the penetration rate of urban SUVs among family users gradually increases, vehicles that balance daily commuting and light outdoor needs have become a key consideration for most consumers. Among these, the 2006 Kia Sportage Public opened up a unique market space in its class with its square and pragmatic positioning. In this review, we mainly focus on two cores: first, whether its practicality as a family SUV can meet daily demands; and second, whether its design from over 10 years ago still has notable points today. Next, we will dissect it one step at a time, from static to dynamic aspects.
In terms of exterior design, the 2006 Sportage Public follows the typical rugged compact SUV style, with overall square and tough lines and no overly complicated decorations. The front face features Kia's early family-style vertical grille, paired with well-structured halogen headlights on both sides, providing decent recognition. A silver skid plate was added below the front bumper, adding a touch of off-road character, though its actual protective capability is limited. The waistline on the side of the body runs straight from the front fender to the rear of the car, paired with 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, giving a relatively stable visual impression. At the rear, the vertical taillight assemblies echo the front face, and the rear bumper is also equipped with a silver skid plate. The overall design is simple and practical, well-suited for household use.
Upon entering the interior, the style is predominantly dark, with a conventionally laid-out center console that uses a lot of hard plastic materials, which was a common level for vehicles of the same class at the time. The center console is equipped with a single-disc CD player and a manual air conditioning system. The layout of the operational buttons is clear and easy to use. The seats are wrapped in fabric material, with average support and wrapping but relatively soft padding, making long-term sitting not overly tiring. In terms of configuration, it comes with electric exterior mirrors, dual front airbags, ABS + EBD, and other basic safety features. Unfortunately, it lacks a central touchscreen and a reversing camera, which gives it a lack of technological appeal.
For space performance, the 2006 Sportage Public has body dimensions of 4350mm × 1800mm × 1695mm, with a wheelbase of 2630mm, which fits the standard size for compact SUVs. The front row space performs decently, with about a fist's worth of room for a 175cm tall passenger's head and legs. The rear row space is comparatively tight, with the same height passenger having only three fingers’ worth of legroom and four fingers’ worth of headroom; seating three people can feel slightly cramped. In terms of storage space, the front door panel storage slots, central armrest box, and cup holders are relatively spacious, meeting the needs for storing daily small items. The trunk has a regular capacity of 364L, which can be expanded to 1248L by folding down the rear seats, making it more practical for carrying large items.
As for power, the 2006 Sportage Public is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum power of 104kW (141Ps) and a maximum torque of 184N·m, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission in the drivetrain. During actual driving, the power output at the start is relatively smooth, and the throttle response is not very sensitive, requiring a deep press on the accelerator to achieve noticeable acceleration. Mid-to-late stage acceleration capability is average, and overtaking requires sufficient distance to be reserved in advance. It provides economic, normal, and sport driving modes, but the differences between the modes are not particularly noticeable; in sport mode, the throttle response is only slightly more proactive.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel has a heavier feel, average directional precision, a noticeable dead zone, and lacks a sense of precise control. The chassis features a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned more for comfort, effectively absorbing minor road bumps. However, when crossing speed bumps or larger potholes, the suspension's rebound feels somewhat sluggish, and the vehicle experiences noticeable body roll. When cornering, the body leans significantly, with insufficient support, instilling a lack of confidence.
In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 100km each on urban roads and highways. The average fuel consumption in urban roads was 11.2L/100km, while on highways, it averaged 8.5L/100km. The combined fuel consumption is approximately 9.8L/100km, indicating a middling performance in fuel efficiency. As for braking performance, the brake pedal travel is relatively long, the initial braking force is soft, and sufficient braking power requires deeper pedal engagement, resulting in relatively long braking distances. For daily driving, you’ll need to anticipate and brake earlier.
Regarding ride comfort, the noise control in the cabin is average. When driving over 80km/h, engine and wind noise become more apparent, intruding into the interior space and affecting the ride experience. As previously mentioned, the fabric seats offer decent breathability, but the support could use some improvement. Notably, the air conditioning performs well, capable of quickly cooling the cabin even in Malaysia’s hot weather.
Overall, the 2006 Kia Sportage Public’s primary advantages lie in its practicality and chassis comfort. While its features and performance are average, as a compact family SUV, it meets basic needs for daily commuting and family trips. Compared to contemporaries like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, it is more affordable, offering decent value for money.
This car is more suitable for families with limited budgets who prioritize practicality, especially those who occasionally need to carry large items or go on short road trips. If you don’t place a high priority on tech features or engine performance and simply need a reliable family SUV, the 2006 Sportage Public is a worthwhile choice.
In conclusion, the 2006 Kia Sportage Public is a compact SUV built on the philosophy of practicality. While it lacks a flashy exterior and extensive features, its performance in terms of space and comfort meets the basic needs of family users. Though its design and features might feel outdated by today’s standards, as a second-hand vehicle, it still offers significant value for money.
