In Malaysia's D-Segment sedan market, consumers have always had clear demands for space, comfort, and value for money—they need a practical vehicle for daily family commuting without compromising on features and quality. The 2017 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Elegance, as one of the mainstream choices in this segment, emphasizes spaciousness, abundant safety features, and a well-balanced driving experience. This time, we conducted a thorough test drive to see if it truly meets the core needs of local consumers.

From the exterior design, the Sonata 2.0 Elegance leans towards a mature style, but it features several distinctive elements in its details. The front adopts the brand's signature wide grille, paired with halogen+LED combination headlights on both sides. Automatic headlights and daytime running lights come standard, which is very convenient for daily use. The smooth lines on the side of the body extend from the hood to the rear. The 17-inch tire specification is well-proportioned to the body, not appearing too understated. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights that are highly recognizable when illuminated. The rear fog lights are included as well. Overall, the style is enduringly appealing, not overly aggressive, and suits the aesthetic preferences of family users.

Sitting inside, the interior layout prioritizes practicality. Although luxury materials are not abundant, the combination of soft-touch plastics and fabric appears decent. The center console is slightly tilted toward the driver, making it more convenient to operate. In terms of core features, a multifunction steering wheel comes standard. The instrument cluster adopts an Electroluminescent Analogue design, which is clear and intuitive. The front row is equipped with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and the rear row also has independent air conditioning vents, ensuring passenger comfort in the back. The addition of a 220V/230V power outlet is user-friendly for those who need to connect external devices. Regarding the seats, the driver's seat has a 12-way power adjustment with sufficient range to find a comfortable position, while the passenger seat is manually adjustable. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, offering good space flexibility. Furthermore, features like keyless entry and start, parking camera systems for both the front and rear, enhance convenience in daily use.

Space performance is one of Sonata's major advantages. The car's dimensions measure 4855mm in length, 1865mm in width, and 1475mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2805mm—this places it in the upper-middle range among its peers in the segment. Front-row seating is spacious, with plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers around 180cm tall. The rear-seat performance is even more impressive, with legroom exceeding two fist widths and comfortable headroom. It can accommodate three adults without feeling cramped. The trunk capacity is 510L, which is adequate for daily needs such as carrying suitcases or baby strollers. Furthermore, with the rear seats folded down, even larger storage space can be created.

In terms of performance, the Sonata 2.0 Elegance is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 154PS and a peak torque output at 4000rpm, paired with an AT transmission. During the actual driving experience, power delivery feels linear, and the car accelerates smoothly without sudden jerks, making it suitable for steady driving. During acceleration, the transmission's shift logic is inclined towards smoothness with no noticeable jerks. However, overtaking requires pressing the accelerator harder because of a slight lag in power response. Nevertheless, the car is fully adequate for daily commuting and family use. It offers two driving modes: Normal and Economy. In Economy mode, the throttle response is softer, making it more suitable for congested urban roads.

The handling and chassis performance are tuned for comfort. The steering wheel has moderate weight, with minimal play, making daily driving relatively easy. The chassis uses a front MacPherson strut and a rear multi-link independent suspension, which can filter out most of the small vibrations when dealing with the commonly bumpy roads in Malaysia. The impact when driving over speed bumps is not too harsh, ensuring the comfort of rear passengers. When driving on curves, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, without any noticeable swaying feeling, and overall stability is quite good.

In terms of fuel consumption, we drove half of the trip in the city and half on the highway, with an average fuel consumption of around 8.2L/100km, which is not far from the official figure of 7.9L/100km. Considering the local traffic conditions, this fuel economy is at a medium level among the same class. It’s not particularly fuel-efficient but also won't impose a significant fuel cost burden on users. As for braking performance, the vehicle maintains a stable posture during emergency braking. The braking force is linear, sufficient in deceleration, and provides confidence for daily driving.

The details in ride comfort are done quite well. Noise levels inside the cabin are well-controlled, and wind and tire noise are not too obvious during highway speeds, allowing passengers to communicate without much disturbance. The seats offer good support, making long rides less tiring. The rear air conditioning vents and power outlets cater to the needs of rear passengers.

To sum up, the core advantages of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Elegance are clear: spacious interior, comprehensive safety features (6 airbags, stability control, front and rear parking sensors, and parking camera), and balanced ride comfort. Compared to competitors in the same class, its spaciousness and warranty policy (5 years/300,000 km) are notable advantages. Although its power output is not particularly strong, it is fully sufficient for daily family use. This car is more suitable for families who value practical interior space, safety features, and long-term reliability. Whether for daily commuting or weekend family outings, it performs well. If you're looking for a mid-sized sedan with no obvious shortcomings and decent value for money, the Sonata 2.0 Elegance is worth considering.

Last week's heavy rain during the morning rush hour, the car remained steady on the road with a single press of the accelerator, the sense of security was instantly maxed out!

This Sonata has been driven for a few years, and the best part is that the seats can be adjusted in 12 directions during traffic jams, making it easy on the back; the rear row can fit three large men without feeling cramped, and the air conditioning is strong both in the front and back. The only downside is that acceleration is a bit sluggish, so overtaking trucks on the highway requires giving gas in advance, but the safety features are top-notch, giving peace of mind for family trips.

I've been driving the Sonata 2.0 Elegance for a few years, and it's truly stable! The dual-clutch transmission is smooth and without jerks during traffic jams. On the highway, it’s got great power when you step on the gas for overtaking. The back seat can comfortably fit three friends without feeling cramped, and the trunk has room to spare even after fitting a stroller and a backpack. The safety features are fully loaded, and it feels reassuring driving in the rain. The only downside is the halogen headlights, which are a bit lacking at night and need an upgrade.

This Sonata has been driven for a few years, and the most satisfying aspects are the interior texture and space—after work, picking up the kids, you can fit two child safety seats in the back row and still have room for backpacks. The dual-zone air conditioning is excellent for dealing with the afternoon heat. However, with a 1.5-ton car paired with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, overtaking during rush hour requires stepping on the gas early. That said, it's stable enough for family use. Plus, the 5-year or 300,000-kilometer warranty ensures peace of mind.
