  • Overview of the Series

The history of Hyundai Sonata in Malaysia dates back to the second generation (Y2) model. By the time of the sixth generation (YF), it had gained immense popularity in Malaysia. It has now developed into its eighth generation, equipped with a brand-new design and power system, attempting to challenge formidable rivals such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat, and Mazda 6.

    Power System

It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5L SmartStream G2.5 MPI petrol engine, which can output 180 PS and 232 Nm, equipped with a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Although its power output is slightly inferior to some of its competitors, gear shifts are seamless and power delivery is smooth. It takes 9.6 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h, which is faster than the Camry's 10.5 seconds.

    Fuel Consumption

Under mixed driving conditions (approximately 50/50 highway and city driving), the average fuel consumption is 9.2 liters/100 km. This figure is better than the Camry's (10.5 liters/100 km), but inferior to the Accord's (8.8 liters/100 km) and Passat's (6.5 liters/100 km). Since the test vehicle's mileage is less than 1000 km, its fuel consumption performance is average.

    Interior Decoration

The interior continues the fashionable style, with a unique double-spoke steering wheel and slender air vent. It is equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Sonata in Malaysia has a full digital 12.3-inch digital dashboard, but its function set is relatively weak. A unique button-type gear solution is adopted, which saves space. The only dissatisfaction inside the vehicle is the fake seam on the dashboard, which feels cheap.

    Safety System

Priced at about 200,000 ringgit, but without ADAS functions. The only highlight is the Blind View Monitor (BVM) camera, whose function is similar to Honda's LaneWatch, however it works on both sides.

    Driving Performance

During driving, gear shifts are seamless and power delivery is smooth, making everyday driving easy. When accelerating rapidly, the engine noise has a sporty feel, but the suspension is not very sporty. The brake performance is excellent, better than the Camry, Accord, and Passat. In terms of comfort, the front seat is sufficiently supportive, while the rear seat lacks thigh support.
