2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT Review

In Malaysia's C-segment performance car market, the Subaru WRX STI has always been a representative of "pure driving pleasure"—even though the 2017 model has been on the market for years, its combination of a 2.5T boxer engine, manual transmission, and all-wheel drive still captivates driving enthusiasts who seek precise handling. This time, we tested the 2017 WRX STI 2.5 MT, aiming to verify whether this traditional performance car still delivers mechanical appeal in the era of electrification, and whether it could meet light family-use practicality needs.
In terms of appearance, the 2017 WRX STI maintains the classic performance car stance: with body dimensions of 4595×1795×1475mm and a wheelbase of 2650mm, its low-slung profile combined with 18-inch wheels (front tire specs: 245/40 R18) delivers an intense visual impact. The hexagonal front grille paired with signature "hawk-eye" LED headlights gives it a highly recognizable look; the large air vent on the hood is not just for show, as it effectively cools the turbocharged engine. The muscular side lines extend from the fenders to the rear, complemented by a rear diffuser and quad exhaust outlets, maintaining a consistent sporty theme. The rear spoiler is moderately sized, striking a balance between not being overly ostentatious and providing some level of downforce, achieving a design that balances performance and timeless aesthetics.
Sitting inside, the interior leans more practical than luxurious: the dashboard mainly uses soft black materials, adorned with silver trim for contrast, with solid craftsmanship but lacking in technological sophistication. The 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat comes with a memory function and offers decent support, making long drives less tiring; the passenger seat is manually adjustable in 4 ways. The rear seats can be split and folded in a 60:40 ratio, expanding the trunk's capacity from 460L to accommodate larger luggage items. In terms of features, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and seven airbags are all standard; the rear seats are equipped with air vents and a 220V power outlet, covering most daily convenience needs for family use. However, the center console screen is relatively small, and its smart connectivity features are fairly basic, a common issue with older models.
The space performance meets C-segment standards: a 175cm tall front-seat passenger, after adjusting their seating position, has a fist’s worth of headroom remaining; in the rear, a passenger of the same height would have two fists' worth of legroom and one fist’s worth of headroom, without feeling cramped. As for storage space, the door pockets can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest box is deep enough, and there are two cupholders in the front. Everyday items can be stored easily. The minimum ground clearance of 135mm is slightly higher than that of conventional sedans, making it capable of handling Malaysia’s common speed bumps or light unpaved roads without issue.
Performance is the highlight of the 2017 WRX STI: featuring a 2.5T boxer four-cylinder engine with a maximum output of 300PS and maximum torque peaking at 4000rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. During startup, the clutch engagement point is clear, and coordinating the clutch and accelerator is not difficult. Pressing the accelerator deeply, the turbo kicks in and delivers power instantly, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.2 seconds. The real-world experience offers an intense pushback feeling, and mid-range acceleration is confidence-inspiring. The manual gearbox provides precise shift lever action with clear gear positions; each shift delivers a noticeable mechanical feedback that automatic transmissions cannot replicate.
In terms of handling, the full-time four-wheel-drive system is the essence: the body remains stable when cornering, the steering is precise with minimal play, and the road feedback is clearly perceptible. The front MacPherson + rear double-wishbone independent suspension is tuned on the stiffer side, making the ride bumpy when passing speed bumps, but it offers excellent support while cornering, with well-controlled body roll. For daily driving, the chassis' filtration of minor road irregularities is just average, and the road feel is very pronounced. It's less comfortable compared to family cars, but this is exactly what defines a performance car. In terms of fuel consumption, the actual measurement under mixed driving conditions is about 10L/100km, around 12L in urban traffic congestion, and can drop to 8L during highway cruising. This is a normal level for a 2.5T engine.
The noise control is average: at low speeds, tire noise and engine noise are not very noticeable, but at speeds over 120km/h, wind noise and tire noise can be heard in the cabin, though still within an acceptable range. The braking performance is excellent, with short braking distances and a linear response, and the vehicle does not veer during emergency braking.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT are clear: the pure joy of manual driving, powerful performance, stable full-time four-wheel-drive handling, while also meeting basic household needs. Compared with competitors like the Honda Type-R or the Golf GTI, its all-wheel-drive system holds an advantage on wet and slippery roads, and the mechanical texture of the manual transmission is more pronounced. However, its interior technological feel and fuel efficiency are slightly inferior.
This car suits two types of people: first, those who truly love driving and enjoy the mechanical feel of a manual transmission performance car; second, young families who occasionally need a family car but value handling and performance more. If you’re looking for a car that can handle daily commuting while allowing you to unleash your passion on mountain roads during weekends, the 2017 WRX STI 2.5 MT is worth considering—it may not be the most comfortable or the smartest, but it is definitely one of the most enjoyable to drive among C-Segment performance cars.
Finally, it's worth saying that the 2017 WRX STI 2.5 MT is a car that "those who understand will naturally appreciate": it doesn’t come with flashy features, nor does it aim for comfort. Instead, with its pure mechanical texture and strong performance, it upholds the essence of traditional performance cars. In the era of electrification, cars like this will only become rarer. If you're a fan of manual transmissions and all-wheel-drive performance, it’s still an option you shouldn’t miss.
