In the local pickup market, vehicles that cater to both daily commuting and light off-road needs have always been the focal point for consumers. The 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 XL (A), as a popular choice in this segment, has attracted many family users and small business owners with its reputation for durability and balanced configuration. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether its practicality matches its market positioning and whether its dynamic performance can meet diverse usage scenarios.

In terms of exterior design, the 2018 Ranger 2.2 XL maintains the classic rugged style of Ford pickups. The front features a trapezoidal grille paired with sturdy chrome trim, flanked by square-shaped halogen headlights that echo the black protective panel below the front bumper, creating a high level of visual recognition. The side profile has straight lines, and the 5426mm length and 1860mm width create a broad outline. The 255/70 R16 tires paired with silver wheels ensure both excellent off-road capability and stability in daily driving. At the rear, the vertical taillights and practical rear bumper step design stand out. The cargo bed tailgate is easy to open, and the overall design focuses on functionality rather than ornate elements.

Inside the car, the interior adopts a dark color scheme, and the dashboard layout is simple and well-organized. The steering wheel features a three-spoke multifunction design, with volume adjustment and phone control buttons integrated on the left side and paddle shifters equipped on the right side, making operation convenient. The instrument panel has a backlit analog design, providing clear and intuitive information display. The center console comes equipped with a basic audio system, where the four speakers meet daily listening needs. Below that, single-zone manual air conditioning knobs provide adequate feedback and are easy to adjust. The seats offer manual adjustments, with the front seats providing good support, and the rear seats can be folded upward to reveal hidden storage space for tools or small items. There are ample storage compartments throughout the car, and the door panels and central armrest box offer practical space. The inclusion of a 220V/230V power outlet also facilitates outdoor electricity usage.

In terms of interior space, the 3220mm wheelbase ensures ample passenger space. The front row offers sufficient headroom, with a 180cm-tall individual still having about a fist of space above their head when seated. The legroom in the rear is also quite spacious, with two fists of space between the knees and the back of the front seat, making long-distance travel comfortable without feeling cramped. Although the size of the cargo bed is not specified, actual measurements show that it can easily accommodate two standard suitcases or small cargo, meeting everyday loading needs. The rear row is equipped with ISO FIX child seat interfaces, making it convenient for families to install child seats. Although there are no rear air-conditioning vents, the cooling effect of the front air conditioning is sufficient to cover the entire cabin.

As for dynamic performance, the 2.2L turbocharged diesel engine has a maximum power output of 160PS and a maximum torque that peaks at 1600rpm, ensuring a quick throttle response during takeoff. Even when fully loaded with cargo, it does not feel underpowered. The 6-speed automatic transmission offers smooth gear transitions, with clear upshift and downshift logic during city driving and almost unnoticeable jerks. Switching to sport mode increases the response speed of the paddle shifters, allowing for quick downshifting to enhance power delivery during overtakes. The chassis uses a double wishbone independent front suspension and a leaf spring rear suspension, tuned to be firm. It handles bumpy roads well, keeping vehicle body sway within a reasonable range without feeling loose. When driving on country roads, the minimum ground clearance of 237mm ensures excellent passability, easily handling ordinary potholes and dirt slopes.

The fuel consumption performance aligns with the advantages of diesel vehicles. After testing in mixed city and highway conditions, the fuel consumption is about 7.5L per 100 kilometers. For a 4x4 pickup truck, this result is relatively economical. In terms of braking, the front ventilated disc brakes provide sufficient braking force, and the brake pedal feedback is linear. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains a stable posture. Regarding noise control, the noise from the diesel engine is slightly noticeable at idle, but while driving, wind and tire noise are well controlled, ensuring conversations inside the car are not affected.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 XL (A) lie in its balanced practicality and reliable power performance. Compared to vehicles in the same class, its price offers better value for money, and details such as the multifunction steering wheel, paddle shifters, and 220V power supply are more user-friendly than its competitors. It is suitable for those who need to balance family travel, daily cargo transport, and occasional light off-roading, such as small business owners or families who enjoy outdoor activities. If you are looking for a rugged, practical pickup truck, this vehicle is worth considering.

Pros
2.2T diesel engine with strong low torque, power kicks in at 1600 RPM, making uphill driving and following traffic effortless; suitable for mountain roads and traffic scenarios
237mm high ground clearance provides excellent passability, reducing the risk of undercarriage scraping on muddy or uneven roads
Practical storage, rear seat flip-up design can store tools/camping gear; can carry up to half a ton of cargo, fulfilling both commercial and personal needs
Cons
The airbags are only 2, which is fewer and not as considerate as the high-end version.
The manual parking operation is troublesome, and it requires effort to pull when parked on a slope.
The halogen headlights are insufficient in brightness, and the lighting performance is poor on rainy/foggy days.

Previously, I drove a Japanese small car, and it always felt a bit underpowered when carrying loads or climbing hills. Switching to the Ranger 2.2 XL was the right choice! A 160-horsepower diesel turbo is super practical in Malaysia — during the morning rush hour on Jalan Loke Yew, the low-end torque kicks in at 1600 RPM, making it easy to follow traffic; on weekends, taking the family to the foothills of Genting Highlands, the 4WD navigates muddy mountain roads steadily, and the 237mm ground clearance means no worries about scraping the undercarriage. In terms of safety, it has ABS and ESP, but only 2 airbags, which isn’t as thoughtful as the higher-end models. A small downside is that the manual handbrake is a bit troublesome, especially when parking on a slope, as you have to pull it hard. However, it can carry half a ton of cargo, and the rear seats can be lifted to store tools, making it suitable for both business and family use in Malaysia. With a little over 100,000 MYR, the value for money is truly unbeatable!

Last month, I took my family camping at the foot of Genting Mountain. We encountered heavy rain halfway, but the 2.2T diesel engine was very stable on the muddy mountain road, and the 237mm ground clearance avoided scraping the chassis. The interior feels plasticky but is practical for storage. The rear seats can be lifted to fit camping lights, and the 220V power outlet can supply power to an electric cooker. The halogen lights are not bright enough in the rain, but the rugged exterior looks great and stands out at the campsite. 4 points for the interior, 4 points for the exterior, sufficient for daily use and reliable for off-road adventures.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain to pick durians. After the heavy rain, the mountain roads were muddy. The 2.2T diesel's low torque burst out at 1600 rpm, making uphill driving effortless. However, when fully loaded with 5 people and durian boxes, the acceleration in the latter segment was slightly sluggish (Performance 4 stars). The body is wide and sturdy, and the silver-gray paint looks impressive in the rainforest (Appearance 5 stars). On the way down the mountain, the ABS and hill-start assist kept the wet roads under control steadily, and the ISOFIX interface also made installing the rear safety seat reassuring (Safety 5 stars). With an 80L fuel tank, I still had half a tank left after a round trip—diesel cars are indeed fuel-efficient.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain, and as soon as we got on the mountain road, we encountered a heavy downpour. The Ranger's 237mm ground clearance is really impressive, it handled water-filled potholes without any trouble at all. The ABS and vehicle stability control didn't let me down either, but having only 2 airbags leaves me a bit uneasy. The exterior is truly dirt-resistant; after running through muddy roads, a couple of rinses make it shiny again. However, the halogen headlights are a bit inadequate in rain and fog, so I'll need to replace them with brighter ones myself.

Last week, while hauling building materials up a steep slope, the 2.2's power was far more impressive than expected—stepping on the gas pedal even a little didn't feel sluggish at all!
