In Malaysia's pickup truck market, models that balance carrying capacity, off-road capabilities, and everyday practicality have always been the top choice for hardcore users. The 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 XL (M), as a classic model in the mid-size pickup truck segment, has long held its place with balanced performance and durability. This time, we got the manual four-wheel-drive version for a test drive, aiming to verify its real-world performance in urban commuting, suburban hauling, and light off-road scenarios, and to see if this long-standing model can still meet the needs of current users.

Looking at the exterior, the 2018 Ranger 2.2 XL maintains the rugged style of Ford's pickup truck lineup. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, paired with two sturdy chrome strips, with the Ford blue oval logo embedded in the center, offering high recognizability. The square-shaped halogen headlights on both sides align with the edges of the grille, and round front fog lights are positioned below. The overall proportions are well-balanced, without unnecessary embellishments. The side profile features straight lines, with dimensions of 5426mm in length and 1860mm in width, ensuring ample cargo bed space. The 3220mm wheelbase also provides adequate legroom for rear passengers. At the rear, a black roll bar is mounted above the bed panel, while the vertically oriented taillights echo the wheel arch lines on the sides of the vehicle. A towing hook is equipped beneath the rear bumper, emphasizing practicality over chasing trendy aesthetics.

Opening the door, the interior is predominantly dark hard plastic, fitting the utilitarian nature of a pickup truck, but the detailing is relatively well-executed. The dashboard layout is straightforward, with the left side housing the air conditioning vents and manual control knobs, the center featuring a radio and a 4-speaker audio system, and a USB port and a 220V/230V power outlet positioned below for external device connections. A multifunction steering wheel is standard, with volume control and call answer buttons on the left, and paddle shifters on the right (though paddle shifters may see limited use on a manual transmission vehicle, it’s better to have them than not). The instrument cluster is backlit and analog, with clearly legible tachometer, speedometer, and fuel gauge, and a small central screen displaying mileage and fuel consumption information. For seating, the front driver’s seat supports manual adjustment and provides decent cushioning and support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seats can be folded up to reveal storage space underneath, and when unfolded can accommodate three passengers. Legroom is just right for individuals around 175cm tall, with a headroom clearance of about one fist.

In terms of performance, the 2.2T turbocharged diesel engine delivers a maximum output of 160PS, with peak torque kicking in at 1600rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. Starting is smooth, with a clear clutch engagement point, making the clutch and accelerator easy to coordinate even for beginners. The low RPM torque is sufficient, and second gear handles city starts and follow-ups with ease. Acceleration is linear, with no significant turbo lag. On highways, shifting to sixth gear keeps the engine speed at around 2000rpm to maintain a 100km/h cruising speed; even at this point, shifting down just one gear provides prompt power response for overtaking.

As for handling, the steering feels relatively heavy but is precise, and body roll is minimal around corners. The suspension setup includes a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear leaf spring non-independent suspension, which effectively absorbs road disturbances. Particularly on unpaved roads, the rear suspension offers good flexibility, without noticeable bumpiness. Testing it on a gravel road in the suburbs, the four-wheel-drive system in low-speed mode significantly improved the vehicle’s off-road capability. With a minimum ground clearance of 237mm, the truck easily passed over stones as high as 20cm. Combined with the excellent grip of the 255/70 R16 tires, light off-road conditions posed no problem at all.

Fuel consumption is an advantage of diesel vehicles. During this test drive, the average fuel consumption under mixed road conditions was about 8.5L per 100km, and it could drop to 7.8L on highways. For a vehicle weighing over 2 tons, this performance is quite ideal. In terms of noise control, the diesel engine has slight vibration and noise at idle, but once driving, wind and tire noise overshadow the engine noise, making it overall within an acceptable range.

In summary, the core strength of the 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 XL (M) lies in its balanced practicality — the 2.2T diesel engine offers sufficient power and fuel efficiency, the manual four-wheel-drive system is reliable and durable, and the cargo bed and rear space cater to the dual needs of family and work. Standard features such as a 220V power outlet, rear parking sensors, and hill-start assist also enhance daily convenience. Compared to the similarly positioned Toyota Hilux 2.4 E, the Ranger has better power output and a more affordable price tag (RM 95,888 vs Hilux's RM 102,880). Although the interior materials are less refined than those of the Hilux, the discrepancy in configuration is minimal.

This vehicle is suitable for two types of users: first, small business owners who need to balance cargo transport and family use — the cargo bed can accommodate tools or goods, and the rear seats can carry family members. Second, outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy light off-roading — the four-wheel-drive system and high ground clearance can handle unpaved roads in the countryside. Overall, the 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 XL (M) is a practical model. It doesn't have fancy configurations but delivers reliability and practicality to meet the core needs of users. If you need a pickup that is capable for work and family use, it is worth considering.

Pros
Strong power, the diesel turbo responds quickly to acceleration, making full-load climbing and overtaking in rainy weather effortless
Good off-road capability, high ground clearance, easily navigates through waterlogged roads
Practical safety features, hill-start assist prevents rollback, ABS and vehicle stability control ensure driving safety
Cons
Manual transmission operation is laborious, shifting gears requires effort, and stepping on the clutch during traffic jams can make your foot sore, you need to watch the RPM to shift gears.
The interior has a heavy plastic feel and average texture.
The number of airbags is small, only two, which is regrettable.

The power of this manual gear is really strong; on rainy days, it speeds up the slope as soon as you hit the gas, though shifting gears takes a bit of effort!

Last week, I took my family to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. After the heavy rain, the road surface was flooded, and the uphill section was slippery. The 2.37mm ground clearance easily handled the water, uphill assist prevented the car from rolling backward, and ABS performed steadily, giving confidence in safety features. The manual gear shifting felt smooth, and the paddle shifters made overtaking brisk. However, the interior feels plasticky, though the rear storage is decent for carrying fruits. The boxy exterior parked next to the orchard and other pickups doesn't stand out too much but appears robust enough. A well-deserved 4-star exterior rating.

Driven a 2018 Ranger 2.2 XL manual for a few years, it’s truly durable! The diesel turbo provides plenty of power, overtaking on the highway is easy with just a push on the gas, and climbing hills when fully loaded is effortless. The back seat can fit three friends comfortably, and when lifted up, there's extra storage space, making it super convenient for carrying camping gear. The halogen lights are bright enough, stable even on rainy nights, but it’s just a slight pity that there are only two airbags.

Last week, I took my family for an outing at the foot of Genting Mountain. We encountered a heavy rain halfway, and the mountain road was very slippery. The 2.2T diesel engine with manual transmission climbed well, but I had to keep an eye on the RPM when shifting gears since the torque kicks in at 1600 RPM. My foot got sore from pressing the clutch during traffic jams. The interior has a heavy plastic feel, but the rear seats can be lifted to store children's toys, which is quite practical. The halogen lights were a bit dim in the rain and fog, but the vehicle stability control and ABS helped me during an emergency braking situation. The exterior looks rugged and manly, but the paint is thin and scratches easily when hit by branches. The safety features are solid, making me feel secure while driving, but this manual transmission really wears my leg out in the Kuala Lumpur rush hours!
