In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment sedan market has become increasingly intense, and the demand for cost-effective and practical models from consumers has significantly increased. The 2018 Honda City 1.5 S, as a popular contender in this segment, has consistently gained attention due to its reliable powertrain, spacious interior, and five-year unlimited mileage warranty. This test drive will focus on its static experience and dynamic performance in daily usage scenarios, providing potential buyers with an intuitive reference.

From the exterior, the 2018 City 1.5 S leans towards a stable and conservative style. The front fascia adopts Honda's family-style chrome trim that connects the halogen headlights on both sides, with daytime running lights as standard, offering decent recognizability when illuminated. The side profile features smooth lines, and the 4442mm length combined with a 2600mm wheelbase ensures efficient space utilization within its compact body. The rear design is simple, with the taillights echoing the design of the front, while the chrome trim at the bottom of the rear bumper adds a touch of refinement. The tire specifications are 175/65 R15, paired with steel rims, which may appear somewhat plain but align with the positioning of this model.

Entering the cabin, the interior adopts a dark color scheme, with most materials being hard plastics, though the assembly craftsmanship is relatively neat. The center console is equipped with a 6.8-inch touchscreen, supporting basic multimedia functions with moderate operational smoothness. A multifunction steering wheel is standard, allowing control over volume, phone calls, etc., which proves to be practical. The instrument cluster features an electronic backlit analog design, providing clear readings. Seats are manually adjustable, with adequate front-row support, and the rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split to expand the trunk space. In terms of storage, the front door panel storage compartments and center armrest box offer sufficient space, while the rear is equipped with air conditioning vents and a 220V power socket, meeting everyday practical needs. The trunk boasts a capacity of 536 liters, capable of easily accommodating three carry-on suitcases, making it suitable for family use.

In terms of power, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum output of 120PS at 6600rpm and a peak torque of 145N·m at 4600rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, the start is smooth, throttle response is linear, and it easily meets urban commuting needs below 2000rpm. When the accelerator is deeply pressed, and the rpm rises above 4000, the power surges noticeably, making overtaking relatively easy. The CVT transmission shifts without jerks, although slight rev hang is noticed during sudden acceleration. In economy mode, the power output is smoother, making it suitable for highway cruising, while in sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, and higher rpm is maintained, which is better for overtaking situations.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a light feel with minimal play, making daily driving agile. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, filtering out most minor bumps when passing speed bumps or rough roads, ensuring rear passengers do not feel significant impact. When cornering, the body roll is within a reasonable range, and the chassis feels cohesive, instilling sufficient confidence. The braking system performs steadily, with a moderate pedal travel and linear braking force delivery. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains a stable posture.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 5.7L/100km. In actual tests, urban fuel consumption was approximately 6.5-7.0L/100km, while highway cruising reduced consumption to 5.0-5.5L/100km, meeting expectations. In terms of noise control, the cabin remains relatively quiet at speeds below 60km/h, but tire and wind noise gradually become noticeable beyond 80km/h, though still within an acceptable range. The seat wrapping is average, but the soft padding ensures that long periods of seating do not cause fatigue.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Honda City 1.5 S lie in its spacious interior, reliable powertrain, five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and practical features. Compared to competitors in the same segment, its space performance surpasses that of the Toyota Vios, its features are more comprehensive than the Mazda 2, yet its price is more competitive. It is suitable for families who value practicality and have a budget of RM70,000 to RM80,000, especially those who frequently need to carry passengers and cargo. As a family commuter car, it strikes a good balance between space, performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability, making it a pragmatic choice in the B-segment sedan market.

Pros
The safety configuration is practical and reliable. ABS, VSA, etc., effectively ensure driving safety in emergency situations.
Excellent space performance, the 536L trunk can easily accommodate luggage for family trips.
Smooth and fuel-efficient performance, the CVT transmission operates without jerks, and the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine provides quick starts with fuel consumption as low as 5.7L.
Cons
The interior has a strong plastic feel, and the texture of some materials needs improvement
Noticeable body roll during high-speed cornering, and vehicle stability in high-speed scenarios is average
The tires are relatively narrow, and driving in rainy conditions requires caution due to insufficient grip

Last time during a heavy rain, I braked suddenly to avoid a motorcycle that darted out unexpectedly. The ABS was clicking but stopped steadily; this safety feature is really worth it!

Previously, the Myvi I had was small in space, so I switched to the City 1.5 S because of its 536L trunk. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting, the baby's stroller and my wife's luggage fit easily. During morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Ampang, the CVT is smooth and doesn't jerk, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine accelerates briskly, and overtaking is effortless. The interior does feel a bit plasticky, but practical features like the multifunction steering wheel and keyless entry justify the RM75,000 price. In terms of safety, it has VSA and dual airbags, which make driving in the city reassuring, although there is noticeable body roll when cornering at high speeds. Fuel consumption is exceptionally low at 5.7L; I commute 20 kilometers daily, and one tank of fuel lasts me a week. The only downside is the narrow tires, so I have to be careful on rainy days, but overall, it's a reliable family car!

Previously, I drove a Myvi, and switching to the City 1.5 S was definitely the right choice! I give full marks for safety and interior—ABS and vehicle stability control saved me once on the highway, and the interior buttons are convenient to use. The 6.8-inch touchscreen with Spotify connectivity is super handy. During morning rush hour on the LDP highway, the CVT is very smooth with no jerks when following traffic. On weekends, taking the whole family to Genting, the hill start assist prevented me from rolling back, and the rear seats folding 60:40 accommodated both a baby stroller and camping gear. However, a small downside is the halogen lights are too dim; driving on rural roads at night requires extra focus. With 5.7L/100km fuel consumption, even with rising fuel prices in Malaysia, it doesn’t hurt. The 5-year unlimited mileage warranty also brings peace of mind!

Previously drove a Myvi which felt underpowered, but switching to the City 1.5 S is really satisfying! During rush hour on Kuala Lumpur's LDP highway, the CVT is really smooth, and just a light press on the accelerator gives enough power, making overtaking effortless. Took the family to the foot of Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the hill start assist was super stable. The 1.5L NA engine is sufficient for mountain roads. Although the interior has a lot of plastic, the keyless system and touchscreen are practical, and the 536L trunk can fit a baby stroller and my wife's shopping bags. The safety features are basic but sufficient, though having only 2 airbags is a bit unnerving. Fuel consumption of 5.7L is truly economical, so even with Malaysia's rising fuel prices, it’s not painful. A small gripe is that the tires are narrow, making it feel a bit unstable on rainy days, but overall, it's completely adequate for family use. At this price point, what more could you ask for?

Previously drove a Perodua Myvi, and switched to the City 1.5 S purely for its looks — the streamlined body is really pleasing to the eye under KL's sunlight, 5 points for appearance, no complaints! During the morning rush hour traffic on the LDP highway, the CVT transmission is as smooth as drinking white coffee. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine isn't the best for quick starts, but it's sufficient for overtaking when accelerating, very fair to rate it 4 points for performance. Took the family to the base of Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the hill assist was super useful. The 60:40 foldable rear seats could even fit a child's bicycle. A minor downside is the narrow tires, which feel a bit unstable driving through water puddles on rainy days; also, it only has 2 airbags — having 2 more would feel much safer. Nevertheless, it's more than enough for daily commuting and family use. The 5-year unlimited mileage warranty by Honda in Malaysia is also reassuring, and the value-for-money is undeniable!
