The compact luxury SUV market has been gaining popularity locally in recent years. Consumers pursue the sophistication that a brand brings while valuing practicality for daily use. As Jaguar's entry-level SUV, the Jaguar E-Pace has naturally become a popular choice for many. This time, I test-drove the 2018 E-Pace R-Dynamic S, which focuses on sporty exterior styling and balanced configuration. I wanted to see if it could find a foothold among its German competitors in the same class and verify whether its dynamic performance aligns with Jaguar's sporty heritage.

From a distance, the E-Pace R-Dynamic S indeed appears more aggressive than the standard version. The front features a large honeycomb-style grille complemented by blacked-out side air inlets, while the lower front lip is equipped with a sporty kit, giving it an overall youthful and sporty design. The side profile has compact lines, with the 20-inch blacked-out multi-spoke alloy wheels being exclusive to the R-Dynamic version. Paired with red brake calipers, it has a strong visual impact. At the rear, the blacked-out LED tail lights exhibit Jaguar's family-style design and are highly recognizable when illuminated. The rear bumper's dual exhaust layout accentuates the sporty appeal. In terms of the lighting system, the LED headlights feature an automatic lighting function, providing stable illumination in practical usage, which meets daily commuting needs.

Sitting inside, the interior is primarily black, complemented by silver trim and red stitching, creating a sporty and luxurious vibe. The dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, which feel refined, though some areas still have hard plastics, putting it at an average level among luxury models in the same class. The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment display is the centerpiece of the interior, equipped with the InControl intelligent system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The operation is relatively smooth, but the menu logic can be somewhat complex and requires some time to adapt. The seats are upholstered in leather, and the R-Dynamic version offers better lateral support. The front seats feature electric adjustments and heating functions, providing good comfort during long drives.

In terms of space, the E-Pace has body dimensions of 4345mm×1900mm×1649mm, with a wheelbase of 2681mm, which is standard for a compact SUV. The front row offers ample seating space, with a passenger 175cm tall having about a fist-width of headroom left after adjusting the seat. The rear-row legroom is about two fist-widths, with one fist-width of headroom, which is sufficient for everyday family use. However, the raised center floorboard might cause some discomfort for passengers in the middle during long trips. For storage, the door pockets and central armrest box offer moderate space, while the trunk provides a standard capacity of 577L. By folding the rear seats, it expands to 1234L, capable of accommodating large suitcases or baby strollers, which is quite practical.

As for the powertrain, the 2018 E-Pace R-Dynamic S is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power output of 249PS and a peak torque of 365Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response during take-off is lively, and a light press on the accelerator pedal provides a noticeable sense of acceleration. In the mid-to-late acceleration range, it delivers a smooth performance, and overtaking requires a firm press on the accelerator, with the transmission responding quickly to downshift and providing consistent power output. The driving modes include Normal, Sport, and Eco. When switched to Sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, the transmission holds lower gears, and the engine maintains higher RPMs, delivering a more aggressive driving experience.

Handling and chassis performance are Jaguar's strengths, and the E-Pace is no exception. The steering is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds, and stable at high speeds, giving you plenty of confidence. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for sportiness. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations, keeping the body stable, although rear passengers might feel some bumps. While cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and the chassis has strong integrity, maintaining good tracking.

In terms of fuel consumption, after comprehensive tests on urban congested roads and highways, the fuel consumption is about 9.5L per 100 kilometers, which is average among 2.0T models in the same class, making daily usage costs acceptable. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise does enter the cabin at high speeds but remains within an acceptable range and does not affect normal conversations among passengers. For seat comfort, the front seats offer good support, though the padding is somewhat firm, which could lead to fatigue during long drives. The rear seats, on the other hand, have a moderate backrest angle, providing better comfort than the front seats.

Overall, the core highlights of the 2018 Jaguar E-Pace R-Dynamic S are its sporty exterior design, balanced power performance, and Jaguar's signature handling characteristics. Compared to its competitors in the same class, it has a more distinctive appearance and better handling performance than the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. However, its interior quality and tech features are slightly inferior to the BMW X1. This car is more suitable for young consumers who prioritize driving pleasure or families that need a balance between daily usability and occasional spirited driving. If you value brand identity and sporty dynamics and do not have strict space requirements, the E-Pace R-Dynamic S is worth considering; but if you prioritize luxurious interiors and tech configurations, competitors from German brands may be a better fit.

In conclusion, the 2018 Jaguar E-Pace R-Dynamic S is a vehicle with clear strengths and weaknesses. It attracts young consumers with its sporty design and driving dynamics, while its balanced space and features can also meet family needs. In the highly competitive compact luxury SUV market, it may not be the most comprehensive choice, but it is certainly one of the most distinctive.

The steering wheel feels amazing! But the big screen responds a bit slow, which is a little annoying.

The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace R-Dynamic S has been driven for a few years, but it still has a high head-turning rate for its exterior design! For commuting, overtaking is effortless with just a push of the throttle, and the back seat can comfortably fit three friends without feeling cramped. The only downside is that the interior has a lot of plastic parts, which develop a bit of smell after prolonged exposure to tropical sun. A small regret, but it doesn't affect my love for it.

The Japanese SUV I drove before always felt lacking in "oomph." After switching to this 2018 Jaguar E-Pace R-Dynamic S, I finally found what suits me. During the Jalan Ampang morning traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur, the steering has minimal slack, making it much more flexible than my old car when squeezing through tight gaps. When taking my family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, the uphill power was steady, though the naturally aspirated engine did feel a bit weak at low speeds, requiring a deeper push on the accelerator. As for safety, I’m quite reassured—there was no skidding during an emergency brake on a rainy highway, and the active braking system even helped me avoid a rear-end collision once. The only minor issue is that the rear air conditioning vent is positioned too low, and my child often complains that it doesn’t reach their feet. Overall, driving it in Malaysia, the balance between its eye-catching appeal and practicality is spot-on—4 stars for performance and 4 stars for safety, I made the right choice.

This Jaguar E-Pace has quite a powerful engine, but the infotainment system occasionally lags like a slideshow, which really raises my blood pressure!
