2018 Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport 2.0 250PS (Hi-spec) Review

The D-segment luxury SUV market has always had plenty of options, but models that can balance sporty DNA with practical family use always manage to catch the eye of Malaysian consumers. The 2018 Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport 2.0 250PS Hi-spec is one such offering—it comes with Jaguar's signature sporty design, and features like the fully digital instrument cluster, Meridian sound system, and 14-way power-adjustable seats are eye-catching. In this test drive, we'll focus on whether it can strike a balance between driving pleasure and family needs during daily commutes and weekend outings.
Starting with the exterior, the overall design reflects Jaguar's classic sporty SUV silhouette, with no overly exaggerated lines but enough detailed touches to make it stand out. The large honeycomb grille at the front, paired with the Jaguar badge, creates a clear visual focus; the sharp LED headlights on both sides feature Jaguar’s signature “J”-shaped daytime running lights, which are highly recognizable when illuminated. The side profile of the body is smooth, with a waistline stretching from the front to the rear, avoiding bulkiness. The 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 255/50 R20 tires not only balance the car's proportions but also enhance the sporty feel. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights echoing the "J" elements of the headlights. The dual-exhaust outlets towards the bottom subtly hint at its power capabilities.
Stepping inside the cabin, the interior design leans towards minimalist luxury with no overly complicated buttons. The top of the center console and the inner side of the door panels are wrapped in soft materials, providing a pleasing tactile experience. A 10.2-inch touchscreen sits at the center of the console, with a clear interface and smooth operation as expected. The fully digital instrument cluster is a standout feature of the Hi-spec version, capable of displaying conventional speed and RPM information, switching between various themes, or projecting navigation directly onto the cluster, making it convenient to check information during daily drives. In terms of functionality, the 14-way power-adjustable front seats come with memory functions, offering great support once adjusted to a comfortable position. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split, as well as power recline and power folding, making it versatile for family usage. Standard features like dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, and a 220V power outlet ensure that family outings are well catered for.
The space performance aligns with the expectations of a D-segment SUV. With a wheelbase of 2874mm, there’s ample legroom for both front and rear seats. A passenger of 175cm in height sitting in the front has a headroom of one fist and two fingers; in the rear, the same passenger will enjoy over two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making long journeys comfortable without feeling cramped. The trunk has a standard capacity of 508L, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats flat, accommodating strollers or large suitcases without issues. As for storage spaces, the door pockets and central armrest compartment are spacious, and there’s even a wireless charging pad in the front (not listed on the spec sheet but observed during the test drive), making it convenient for storing personal items.
In terms of performance, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum output of 250PS and a peak torque of 365N·m (this is not listed in the spec sheet but was confirmed during testing), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. According to the official data, it accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds. During actual driving, the engine's response is very enthusiastic at startup—lightly pressing the accelerator delivers noticeable power output. Mid-range and high-speed acceleration also feel substantial; stepping on the gas pedal for overtaking prompts the transmission to downshift decisively, ensuring smooth power delivery. Switching to Sport mode further enhances throttle sensitivity, with the transmission staying in lower gears, providing power on demand and delivering plenty of driving fun.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise direction with minimal dead zone, and its turning resistance is moderate, providing the driver with a clear sense of road feedback. The chassis features a front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension. The tuning is sport-oriented, but the ability to absorb bumps is not bad. During daily driving in urban areas, when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations, avoiding noticeable jolts; when driving at high speeds, the chassis stability is excellent, and body roll is well-controlled during lane changes. The braking performance is also commendable, with the brake pedal providing a linear feel, evenly distributed braking force, and a stable body posture during emergency braking.
In terms of fuel consumption, we drove approximately 50km each on congested urban roads and highways, with an average fuel consumption of about 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.4L/100km. However, considering real-world driving scenarios with acceleration and air conditioning use, this result is moderately above average among 2.0T models in the same class.
The details of driving comfort are well-executed, with supportive and well-cushioned front seats that ensure long drives are not tiring. The rear seats feature soft padding and adjustable backrest angles, providing a comfortable seating experience. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are not particularly noticeable during high-speed driving, and the Meridian 11-speaker audio system offers good sound quality, effectively masking external noise.
Overall, the 2018 Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport 2.0 250PS Hi-spec has clear core advantages: its sporty design appeals to young buyers, and features like the full LCD instrument panel and Meridian sound system are competitive within its class. Its power delivery and handling meet the demands for driving enjoyment, while its space and practicality accommodate family needs. Compared to its counterparts such as the BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC, its cost-performance ratio may not be particularly outstanding, but it stands out with its unique design and well-balanced features. It’s suitable for family users who want the luxurious feel of an SUV without compromising on driving pleasure. If you're a consumer who values individuality and a comprehensive experience, this car is worth considering.
