The competition in the Southeast Asian pickup truck market has always been fierce. Consumers require practicality to support daily goods transportation or family trips, while also expecting basic configurations to meet comfort needs. The 2018 Nissan Navara Double Cab 2.5 SE (M), as a 4x4 diesel version, takes on the position of "balanced practicality" with a price of RM 98,888, placing it in the mid-range of its class. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether its performance in terms of power, space, and configurations truly matches the daily usage scenarios of its target users.

In terms of appearance, the 2018 Navara maintains the classic rugged style of a pickup truck, with overall lines that are simple and clean. The front adopts Nissan's family-style V-Motion grille, paired with sturdy chrome trim for a high level of recognition; the halogen headlights on both sides are appropriately sized, complemented by front fog lights below to ensure basic lighting needs. The side profile of the vehicle avoids overly complex designs, and the anti-scratch stripes at the bottom of the doors add a touch of practicality. The 16-inch rims paired with 255/70 R16 tires are thick enough to handle scrapes on unpaved roads. At the rear, the cargo box side panel height is moderate, and the tail lights use a vertical layout that aligns with the vehicle's overall style. Overall, the exterior design leans towards practicality without excessively pursuing a youthful look, aligning with the aesthetic preferences of pickup truck users.

Sitting inside, the interior design focuses on practicality, with a symmetrical layout for the center console. The layout of buttons and knobs is quite user-friendly. The seats are manually adjustable—though less convenient than electric adjustments, they're sufficient for daily use. The rear seats can be folded, expanding storage space when needed. In terms of features, the multifunction steering wheel allows control of audio volume and phone calls, reducing distractions while driving. The instrument panel is an illuminated analog design, clearly displaying basic information such as RPM, speed, and fuel level. The front row is equipped with a single-zone manual air conditioning system, and the rear row also has air conditioning vents to ensure passenger comfort. Additionally, the cabin includes a 220V/230V power socket, which is convenient for using electrical appliances outdoors. However, limited by its price point, the interior materials are mainly hard plastics with an average tactile feel, although the craftsmanship is relatively neat.

Space performance is one of Navara's strong points. The vehicle measures 5255mm in length, 1850mm in width, and 1810mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3150mm. The front seating space is ample—a passenger 175cm tall will find ample headroom and legroom. Rear legroom is about two fists, and headroom is about one fist. Though not particularly spacious, it suffices for family trips or accommodating three adults. Regarding storage, there is a relatively large storage compartment below the center console, and the storage slots on the door panels can accommodate water bottles and miscellaneous items. Although the cargo box dimensions are not provided, it is capable of handling tools or small furniture for daily transportation tasks without issue.

In the power department, the 2.5L turbo diesel engine provides a maximum power of 163PS (3600rpm) with a peak torque output at 2000rpm. It is paired with a manual gearbox and a 4x4 drive system. During initial acceleration, the low-end torque of the diesel engine performs well, delivering noticeable power output with a light press of the accelerator, making it adequate for carrying loads or climbing slopes. The acceleration process is linear, and power response is relatively prompt in low and medium-speed ranges, with quick power delivery when downshifting for overtaking. The manual transmission offers clear gear positions and a moderate shifting feel, making it very user-friendly for drivers familiar with manual gearboxes.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate steering effort and relatively precise pointing without any noticeable play. The front suspension is a double-wishbone independent suspension, and the rear suspension is a multi-link independent suspension. This combination is relatively rare in pickups and significantly improves comfort. When driving over bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor vibrations, and the body has no noticeable bouncing. While cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, and the stability is quite good. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are more noticeable at highway speeds, but the diesel engine noise is relatively well suppressed, making the cabin relatively quiet during normal city driving.

In the fuel consumption testing phase, we drove 100km under mixed road conditions, with 60% in the city and 40% on highways. The average fuel consumption was about 7.8L/100km, which is above average for diesel pickups in the same class. It shows good fuel efficiency. The 4x4 drive system supports switching between high-speed four-wheel drive and low-speed four-wheel drive, providing enough traction for unpaved roads or light off-roading, meeting the needs of everyday outdoor activities.

In summary, the core advantage of the 2018 Nissan Navara Double Cab 2.5 SE (M) lies in its balance: the power is adequate with good fuel efficiency, the space is practical enough to meet family or work needs, and while the configuration is not luxurious, it includes all the basic comfort features. Compared to similar models like the Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger, Navara’s rear multi-link suspension has a certain edge in comfort, and its price is relatively budget-friendly.

This vehicle is suitable for two types of users: one is those who need a pickup that combines work and family functions, such as small business owners, who can use it for cargo and family outings; the other is outdoor enthusiasts, as the 4x4 drive system can handle light off-road conditions, and the 220V power outlet is convenient for outdoor use. However, if you are looking for more luxurious interiors or more powerful performance, you may need to consider a higher configuration version. Overall, the 2018 Navara is a “well-rounded” practical pickup, suitable for users who value cost-effectiveness and balance.

Last Saturday, I took the whole family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. The mountain road, which had been rained on in the morning, was muddy and slippery. Driving a manual car in second gear uphill, the 2.5T diesel's torque suddenly unleashed at 2000 RPM. The car remained very stable, with no slipping—well-deserved 4 stars for performance. With 5 people seated, it didn’t feel cramped. The rear Tip-up base allowed me to easily fit a folded stroller. Although the interior features a lot of plastic, the seams are fine. The 6 speakers play Malaysian songs very clearly, and the 220V power outlet on the passenger side can charge the kids' tablet—5 stars for the interior being thoughtful. The only minor regret is that there’s no rearview camera, so I had to stretch my neck to check the radar prompts.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. The torque of the diesel turbo bursts at 2000 RPM, which is very sufficient for climbing, and the manual gear shifting feels smooth. However, following vehicles at low speeds can be a bit tiring. The interior has a noticeable plastic feel, but the rear air conditioning and 220V power outlet are very practical. On rainy mountain roads with sharp turns, the vehicle stability control intervened in time, giving a full sense of safety. The 255/70R16 tires have strong grip and did not skid even on muddy roads. The exterior is tough and stylish, but the brightness of the halogen lights at night is average. Overall, it's a reliable companion suitable for Malaysian road conditions.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. Driving a manual with a 2.5T diesel engine on mountain roads was so enjoyable — it hits peak torque at just 2000 RPM, so climbing hills didn't require frequent gear changes, and the four-wheel drive was extremely stable. But looking back, I felt uneasy about having only two airbags in case of skidding on rainy days. Also, the halogen headlights weren't bright enough in the mountain fog, and without a reversing camera, I had to rely entirely on the radar; a beginner would probably panic. However, the power and four-wheel drive were truly outstanding, and it handled rough roads much better than my friend's two-wheel-drive car.

Last Saturday, I took the whole family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. A section of the muddy road was washed out by heavy rain, but after switching to 4H, the 2.5T diesel engine delivered power directly. The torque that kicks in at 2000 rpm pushed the car steadily through the rough terrain. The 255/70R16 tires provided enough grip, but the tire noise was indeed loud. When loading durians at the orchard, the rear Tip-up base was lifted, and three boxes of durians were easily loaded. The manual single-zone air conditioning temperature control was quick, but the knobs felt a bit loose. The halogen headlights were a bit dim for nighttime mountain roads, but the automatic headlights turning on instantly in tunnels were very convenient. Overall, it's great for both hauling and commuting, though the details are a bit rough—4 stars well-deserved.

Previously, I drove an old pickup truck on the East Coast Highway, and the seats were as hard as sitting on a rock. After switching to the Navara SE manual version, it's like "upgrading from a slingshot to a cannon"! Giving the interior a 5-star rating is not an exaggeration—last weekend I took my family to the base of Genting Highlands, and the rear tip-up seats flipped up to fit all our camping gear; the dual-zone air conditioning kept both the elderly and kids from feeling hot; and the six speakers were more than enough for playing Malay songs. In terms of safety, I deducted 1 star because it only has two airbags—lacking side airbags compared to my friend's Hilux. However, the ABS and ESP saved me once on the rainy Ipoh mountain road curve, so it's still reliable. The manual diesel is a bit tiring during Kuala Lumpur's morning traffic when following cars, but the 2.5T torque is super powerful for climbing hills, and its 80L fuel tank enables long-distance drives in Sabah without frequent fuel stops. A minor drawback is the absence of a reversing camera; the first time I parked in a narrow spot near the Petronas Twin Towers, I almost scratched it, but later I installed one myself. Overall, it’s a great choice for both transporting goods and family use in Malaysia, and it’s worth the RM90,000+!
