As the demand for more passenger-oriented pickup trucks continues to grow in the Malaysian market, models that combine cargo capacity with family practicality have gradually become the focus. The 2018 Nissan Navara Double Cab 2.5L VL Plus (A), as a representative in the 4x4 segment, has attracted many users who need cargo capacity but also prioritize driving comfort, thanks to its key features such as 7 airbags, multi-link rear suspension, and a 360-degree camera system. This review will comprehensively evaluate its static design, space practicality, and dynamic driving performance to see whether it can balance both work and life needs.

In terms of exterior design, the Navara continues Nissan's family design language, featuring a large chrome grille on the front, complemented by sharp halogen + LED combination headlights on both sides. Daytime running lights are standard and support automatic activation, making the vehicle highly recognizable. The body side profile is smooth, and its length of 5255mm paired with a width of 1850mm retains the tough stance of a pickup while avoiding a bulky look. The 18-inch alloy wheels with 255/60R18 tires balance on-road stability and light off-road capability. At the rear, the vertical tail lights echo the front design, and the rear bumper includes chrome accents, giving the overall style a solid and dependable look, suitable for both family and commercial use.

Opening the doors, the interior features a predominantly black color scheme. The center console adopts a symmetrical layout, with buttons clearly arranged and easy to operate. The multifunctional steering wheel supports volume adjustment and call answering, offering a moderate grip. The instrument panel is an illuminated analog display, providing comprehensive information including RPM, speed, and fuel level. The front row features dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and the rear row has independent air vents, ensuring comfort for passengers in different positions. As for the seats, the driver's seat supports electric adjustment, and the rear seats feature a tip-up base design, which can be folded to extend the trunk's storage space. It is worth mentioning that the cabin is equipped with a 220V/230V power socket and a keyless entry system, enhancing convenience for daily use.

In terms of space, the 3150mm wheelbase provides ample room for passengers. When the front seat is adjusted to a suitable position, a 175cm tall passenger still has a fist and two fingers of headroom, and the legroom is generous. With three people seated in the rear row, the lateral space does not feel cramped, and the legroom allows about two fists of distance from the rear of the front seats, with headroom measuring roughly a fist, an impressive performance for a pickup truck. For storage, the door panel storage compartments and the large center armrest box can accommodate water bottles, phones, and other personal items. Although the exact dimensions of the rear cargo bed are not stated, its flexibility increases significantly when combined with the foldable rear seats, making it suitable for loading larger items.

The powertrain is equipped with a 2.5L turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a maximum output of 190PS and a peak torque that kicks in at 2000rpm, paired with an automatic transmission. During daily driving, the initial response is smooth, and the power delivery becomes linear as the turbocharger activates. When accelerating or overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply prompts the transmission to shift gears promptly, allowing the vehicle to quickly pick up speed. Switching to four-wheel-drive mode enables smooth handling of light off-road conditions, such as muddy or gravel roads. As for the chassis, the combination of front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension offers better damping on rough roads compared to traditional leaf springs. The vehicle exhibits less body bounce when passing speed bumps, maintaining a good level of comfort. However, during high-speed cornering, the body leans noticeably, which is expected for a pickup with a relatively high center of gravity.

The fuel consumption test combines urban and highway conditions, with an average fuel consumption of approximately 8.5L per 100 kilometers. For a 2.5T diesel four-wheel-drive model, the fuel economy performance meets expectations. In terms of braking, the front ventilated disc brakes respond promptly, with a moderate braking distance, ensuring sufficient safety during daily driving. Regarding noise control, engine noise at idle is slightly noticeable, but wind and tire noise are well-controlled during driving, not affecting interior conversations. Seat comfort is good, providing long-distance driving without significant fatigue. The rear seats are slightly firm, but the support is adequate.

In terms of safety features, 7 airbags (including knee airbags and front and rear head curtain airbags), vehicle stability control, hill start assist, and a 360-degree panoramic camera are all standard. These safety features are outstanding in the same class of pickups. Compared to competitors such as the Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger, Navara's rear multi-link suspension offers superior comfort, and features like keyless entry and electric seats enhance daily convenience.

Overall, the 2018 Nissan Navara Double Cab 2.5L VL Plus (A) is a pickup truck that balances practicality and comfort. It's suitable for those who frequently need to carry cargo, occasionally go off-road, and also want a comfortable ride for their families, such as small business owners or families who enjoy outdoor camping. Its core strengths lie in comprehensive safety features, comfortable suspension, and flexible space. While its power output is not overly aggressive, it is fully sufficient for daily use. If you're looking for a 4x4 pickup that balances work and life, the Navara is worth considering.

As the owner of the 2018 Navara 2.5L VL Plus, having driven it for nearly five years, I genuinely feel that this pickup truck is incredibly practical in Malaysia! First, the exterior—definitely a solid 5-star rating! With its rugged lines and 18-inch alloy wheels, it stands out in KL's traffic. Even a Malay uncle at the petrol station once asked me if it was modified. On weekends, when heading to Genting or Cameron Highlands, with winding mountain roads, this 2.5T diesel engine truly shines. Its 190 horsepower delivers strong and steady performance with just a press of the pedal, climbing hills effortlessly. It has never felt underpowered—absolutely worthy of a 5-star performance rating! As for the interior, 4 stars is about right—overall workmanship is decent. The dual-zone air conditioning is very practical for Malaysia's hot weather, and the rear AC vents are cool enough. However, over time I noticed the plastic on the center console tends to attract fingerprints easily, and the dashboard still uses traditional dials instead of a fully digital display. A digital upgrade would've been perfect. But that said, judging by pickup truck standards, this interior quality is much better than other models in the same price range, and it's totally sufficient for everyday use. All in all, whether it's for construction site work, carrying cargo, or taking the family on road trips, this truck handles it all. Given Malaysia's driving conditions, this vehicle is truly reliable!

As the owner of the 2018 Navara 2.5L VL Plus, after driving it for nearly five years under Malaysian road conditions, I feel its performance and safety can both be rated 4 out of 5, reaching a level of "sufficient and worry-free." First, let's talk about performance — with the 2.5T diesel engine paired with the AT gearbox, it handles city traffic smoothly in Kuala Lumpur, without the jerks that some diesel cars have. On weekends, when I take my family to Genting Highlands, the torque comes in around 2000 rpm while climbing hills, and even with a full load of 5 people plus camping gear in the trunk, it doesn't feel sluggish. Occasionally, when driving on the East Coast Highway at a cruising speed of 120km/h, the engine noise is acceptable, and stepping on the accelerator hard for overtaking provides ample power reserves. However, since it's a pickup truck, the body does sway a bit when taking corners at high speeds, and the roll is more pronounced compared to an SUV. This is not exactly perfect, but as a 4x4 vehicle, it handles Malaysia's common countryside rough roads and waterlogged roads during the rainy season very well, and the four-wheel-drive switching is also very convenient. In terms of safety, I feel reassured — 7 airbags and vehicle stability control come standard. Last time, when I encountered an emergency on the North-South Expressway and had to brake hard, the ABS kicked in promptly, keeping the car stable. The 360-degree camera has been a huge help when reversing in Kuala Lumpur's narrow apartment parking lots, making it easy to see surrounding motorcycles and road barriers. The ISOFIX interface is also practical, making it very convenient to install a child safety seat. However, there is one small regret: the parking brake is manual, and when parked on a slope, it requires a bit of effort to pull. If it had an electronic parking brake, it would be even better. Overall, for its usage scenarios in Malaysia, the performance and safety of this vehicle can meet the requirements and has never let me down. A 4-star rating is very fair.

As the owner of the 2018 Navara 2.5L VL Plus, after driving it for nearly five years, the thing I’m most satisfied with is its safety features! During Malaysia's rainy season, sudden downpours often lead to slippery highways that feel like they've been oiled. Once on the North-South Expressway, I encountered an emergency brake from the car in front, and the vehicle stability system kicked in instantly — the car stopped firmly without skidding. The 7 airbags and 360-degree camera are definitely not just for show. Especially in Kuala Lumpur where parking spaces are tight, the 360-degree view system has helped me avoid countless scrapes and bumps. Full marks for the safety features! I’ve got to commend the interior too. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is incredibly practical during Malaysia's 35-degree Celsius heat. I prefer it cool at 18 degrees, while my wife who’s usually in the passenger seat likes it at 24 degrees, and we don’t interfere with each other. The rear air conditioning vents are also powerful; on trips to Genting Highlands with my family, the elderly and kids in the back seat never complained about feeling hot. The leather seats have just the right firmness, so even on long journeys, I don’t feel back pain. The control buttons on the center console are clearly laid out, and even with gloves on, you can operate them without looking. The attention to detail is very thoughtful — 5 out of 5 for the interior with no complaints! As for the exterior, it’s rugged and imposing overall, which matches the style of a pickup truck. However, the front design is quite conventional — after looking at it for a long time, it feels a bit monotonous. If it could be updated with a blacked-out grille like the newer models, it would look even cooler. So, I’d give it 4 points for appearance. That said, when I drive to rural areas in Sabah, the boxy design does stand out quite a bit and gets some second glances from the locals. Overall, as a family and light off-road vehicle, the Navara performs incredibly well given Malaysia’s road conditions!
