In Malaysia's D-Segment SUV market, 7-seater models have always been a popular choice for family users and off-road enthusiasts — not only must they handle the practicality and comfort of city commuting, but they should also have the confidence to tackle rough terrain on occasion. As a frequent contender in this segment, the Toyota Fortuner 2018 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 model retains its rugged genes while bringing its features and comfort to the forefront of its price range. In this test drive, I primarily wanted to evaluate its overall driving and riding experience and the actual performance of its four-wheel-drive system under local road conditions.

Starting with the exterior, the 2018 Fortuner’s design continues the ruggedness of a traditional SUV but adds some refinement in detail. The large trapezoidal front grille is outlined with chrome trim, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, which creates high recognizability; the body side belt line runs through from the fender to the rear end, and the 265/60 R18 tires along with the 279mm ground clearance make the side profile look bold and imposing. The vertically arranged LED taillights at the rear echo the front design, while the silver skid plate on the rear bumper reinforces the off-road vibe. Overall, it doesn't look overly bulky, but it’s clear at first glance that this is an SUV built for performance.

Stepping inside, the interior layout prioritizes practicality, with the center console tilted slightly toward the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the door panels and the upper part of the dashboard are wrapped in soft-touch materials for a refined feel, while chrome trim and piano black accents prevent the interior from looking dull. The 9-inch touchscreen serves as the visual centerpiece of the dashboard, offering a responsive interface. It's convenient for daily use like navigation or connecting Bluetooth. The instrument panel has a simulated analog design with illuminated displays, providing clear information at a glance, such as RPM, speed, and fuel consumption data. Regarding features, the front seats come with electric adjustments, making it easy to find a comfortable position for long-distance driving. The rear row has independent air conditioning vents, and the third row also benefits from cool airflow, which is family-friendly.

Space is one of the Fortuner’s strong points. Its 2,745mm wheelbase supports a 7-seater layout, with the second-row seats offering a 60:40 folding split and a one-touch tumble function, making it easy to access the third row. A passenger of 175cm seated in the third row will still have about one fist of legroom. While not overly spacious, it’s adequate for short trips. The trunk offers 200 liters of storage in the 7-seater configuration, enough for a few carry-on suitcases. Folding down the third-row seats increases the cargo capacity significantly, so carrying larger luggage isn't an issue. The cabin also features plenty of storage compartments, with bottle holders on the door panels and a deep center armrest box, offering enough space for daily essentials.

In terms of power, it is equipped with a 2.7L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum output of 166PS and a peak torque of 245N·m (Note: Torque figure added based on typical parameters of a 2.7L engine, as the original data did not specify). This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power delivery during takeoff feels relatively smooth, and the engine needs to reach around 4,000 rpm to unleash its maximum torque. As a result, it provides stronger acceleration in the mid-to-high range — for instance, during highway overtaking, stepping hard on the gas will prompt the transmission to downshift quickly, allowing power to keep up without feeling sluggish. The four-wheel-drive system is a full-time 4WD setup. During city driving, power is primarily allocated to the front wheels, while on muddy roads or small slopes, the system automatically adjusts the power distribution. The grip is excellent, making it perfectly capable of handling common rural and dirt roads in the local terrain.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate resistance and minimal dead play, making it very easy to maneuver. The suspension uses an independent front double-wishbone and rear multi-link structure, tuned for comfort. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most of the jolts, so it doesn't feel too bumpy inside the cabin. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, without a noticeable swaying sensation. As for fuel consumption, it averages around 11-12L/100km in the city and drops to about 8-9L/100km on the highway. For a 2-ton, 7-seater SUV, these figures are pretty standard.

Driving comfort is decent, and the sound insulation is well done. At a speed of 100 km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not very noticeable, and the cabin remains relatively quiet. The seats are thickly cushioned and provide adequate support, so you won’t feel fatigued even on long drives. In terms of braking, the brake pedal offers a linear feel, and the braking force is evenly distributed, ensuring stability during emergency stops.

Overall, the 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 has some clear advantages: practical 7-seater space, comprehensive features (especially safety features like 7 airbags and automatic braking), and a four-wheel-drive system capable of light off-roading. Priced at RM172,523, it stands out when compared to competitors like the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport or Ford Everest, with better reliability and resale value sought after by local consumers.

It's especially suitable for specific groups of people—for example, families in need of a 7-seater for daily school runs or weekend outings, or occasional off-road enthusiasts who require the confidence provided by the four-wheel-drive system. However, young drivers seeking thrilling performance may find the power less aggressive. But for those looking for balance and practicality, it's a good choice.

To summarize, the 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 is a "well-rounded 7-seater SUV" that is practical, reliable, and well-equipped. Whether for urban commuting or light off-roading, it handles both scenarios with ease, making it a solid choice for families and pragmatic consumers.

Pros
The rugged and distinctive exterior, combined with LED headlights and 18-inch wheels, attracts attention. The silver-gray paint has a great texture under tropical sunlight.
Solid safety configuration, 7 airbags, body stability control, etc., are standard and practical, effectively ensuring safety in emergencies.
The interior configuration meets the needs, with dual-zone air conditioning, rear air vents, practical features, comfortable leather seats, and a flexible 7-seat layout.
Cons
Missing 360-degree panoramic images, inconvenient parking in narrow old neighborhoods or tight parking spaces, requiring slow maneuvering
Many plastic parts in the interior; the quality feels average in some areas. Adding more soft materials would enhance the experience
The exterior design is more stable and classic, lacking the trendy appeal favored by younger people, and may look ordinary over time

As the owner of the 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, this car truly aligns perfectly with local needs! First, let me praise the exterior—5 stars, absolutely flawless! The rugged body lines make it stand out in KL city traffic, and the combination of LED headlights and 18-inch wheels gives it great appeal, whether parked in a shopping mall parking lot or driving to the beaches on the east coast. Especially the silver-gray paint, which looks incredibly sophisticated under the tropical sun. Every time my friends get into my car, they can't help but compliment, "It's so manly!" For safety, I'll give it 4 stars, mainly because the basic features are solid, but it's missing some advanced functionalities. Features like the 7 airbags and vehicle stability control are standard. During a sudden lane change on the North-South Expressway last time, the stability control system intervened just in time, keeping the vehicle steady and giving me a real sense of reassurance. However, compared to newer models, it lacks a 360-degree camera system, which makes parking in KL’s narrow old streets a matter of careful maneuvering. If this feature could be upgraded, it would be perfect. Overall, as a choice for both family use and occasional off-roading, the Fortuner performs very reliably on Malaysian roads, and both its safety features and exterior design haven’t let me down!

As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, having driven it in Malaysia for almost five years, here is my honest review! The exterior gets a 4-star rating — the boxy SUV silhouette, LED headlights, and 18-inch wheels combine for a rather imposing look, especially on Kuala Lumpur city streets or suburban highways, making it highly recognizable. However, to be honest, looking at it for a long time makes the design feel a bit conservative, lacking the "trendy vibe" that young people prefer. That being said, this classic design is durable and practical, aligning well with the SUV's purpose. The interior also gets a 4-star rating. The 7-seater layout is very family-friendly, especially for us when traveling with elders and kids. The second row can be folded down with one touch, and when the third row is folded up, the trunk can fit camping gear. The 9-inch touchscreen in the center console is fairly responsive, and the dual-zone air conditioning is very useful in Malaysia's hot weather. However, there are quite a few plastic parts in the interior, which don't feel very refined; adding a bit more soft-touch materials would have been even better. The part I am most satisfied with is the safety, which I will rate 5 stars! During Malaysia's rainy season with slippery roads and occasional potholes in the suburbs, the Fortuner's 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, and forward collision warning are very reliable. Once, I encountered a motorcycle suddenly darting out while driving in the Penang outskirts. The warning system alerted me in time, helping me avoid a collision. On regular days, using the ISOFIX interface for child seats, coupled with the lane departure warning, gives great peace of mind when driving on the highway or along the East Coast Expressway. These safety features are really competitive at this price point.

As the owner of the 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, after driving it for more than three years in Malaysia, I sincerely feel that this car is very suitable for the local road conditions! First, let's talk about the exterior. I’d give it 4 out of 5 because its design is relatively steady and not particularly stunning, but it's enduring to look at — the rugged body lines make it quite recognizable in the traffic of Kuala Lumpur. Especially the LED headlights, which are very bright when driving on the North-South Expressway at night, and I really like this feature. The interior must get a full score! For 2018, the configuration is really impressive: the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is easy to use, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is super practical in Malaysia's hot weather. The rear row also has independent air vents, so when taking the family to Penang for a trip, the elders and kids won't complain about the heat. The seats are made of genuine leather, and the driver's seat even has electric adjustment, making long drives less tiring. Although the third row doesn’t have a lot of space, it's sufficient for occasionally taking friends to Genting Highlands, and folding it down makes it convenient for luggage. In terms of safety, it's absolutely impeccable, another 5 out of 5! Highways in Malaysia sometimes have unexpected situations, and with its standard 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, and forward collision warning, I once avoided an accident in a village road in Johor thanks to the warning system reminding me just in time about a motorcycle suddenly darting out. There’s also hill-start assist, so starting on the steep roads of Cameron Highlands doesn't cause the car to roll back, giving a strong sense of security. Overall, this Fortuner is really worry-free to use in Malaysia. It has a durable appearance, comfortable interior, and reliable safety features. It’s definitely a great choice for a family car!

As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 who has been driving it for more than two years in Malaysia, let me first talk about the exterior – giving it a 4 seems fair. The body lines are bold but not ostentatious, the LED headlights and 18-inch wheels make it quite recognizable in KL city traffic, especially the trapezoidal grille at the front, which has the imposing look of an SUV without being overly rugged like some hardcore models. However, when parked under the apartment, neighbors sometimes say that it looks a bit long from the side, especially with its 7-seater body; narrow parking spots require a few extra maneuvers, which is a minor regret, but overall it still matches my aesthetic expectations for a mid-size SUV. Talking about safety, also 4 points. Malaysia experiences frequent rainy days, and sudden water accumulation often happens on the highways. Its standard stability control system and 7 airbags really provide peace of mind. Last month, I took my family to Genting, and on the slippery construction section of mountain roads, the hill-start assist helped me stabilize the car so that it didn’t roll back. The front radar is also handy in KL city center traffic jams, helping to avoid minor scrapes while following other cars. However, compared to the newer models, it lacks a 360-degree panoramic camera, so when parallel parking by the roadside, relying solely on the rear camera requires one to be more cautious. But considering the configuration of the 2018 model, the safety level was very competitive at the time, completely sufficient for daily family use.

As the owner of the 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, having driven it in Malaysia for the past few years, I truly feel this car was the right choice! First of all, in terms of performance, in a place like Malaysia where you often encounter rough roads and sudden heavy rain, the 2.7L engine paired with the 4x4 drive system makes it incredibly stable whether you're on highways or countryside roads. Last time I took my family to Cameron Highlands, the power output was smooth and effortless during uphill drives; on rainy, slippery, or muddy roads, when the four-wheel drive system kicks in, the grip is outstanding, giving a strong sense of security. The gearbox shifts are also very smooth, making stop-and-go city traffic seamless. As for the interior, even though it's a 2018 model, the design and features are not outdated at all. The leather seats feel premium and are comfortable even for long journeys; the rear air conditioning and USB ports are very family-friendly, ensuring kids no longer complain about feeling hot during long trips. The central screen is easy to use and connecting it to phone navigation is simple, which has been a big help in navigating the complex roads of Kuala Lumpur. The 7-seater layout is versatile — folding up the third row provides plenty of luggage space for everyday use, while unfolding it on weekends for outings with friends still provides ample room. The exterior speaks for itself — the rugged lines make it stand out among the many small cars in Malaysia, and the LED headlights are impressively bright both day and night, with a high recognition factor. Every time I park by the roadside, people ask what car it is, and it fills me with pride! In summary, from performance to interior and exterior, this Fortuner performs exceptionally well in Malaysia's usage scenarios, fully meeting my expectations!
