Specs

In Malaysia's executive SUV market in 2018, 7-seater models have always been a key consideration for family users and business professionals – requiring sufficient space for multiple passengers while also balancing luxury and safety features. The Volvo XC90 T5 Momentum, as a popular contender in this segment, has attracted considerable attention due to the brand's iconic safety performance, 2.0T turbocharged engine, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty policy. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether its performance in daily driving matches its positioning, and to assess whether the practicality of the 7-seater layout meets the needs of most families.

From the exterior, the XC90 T5 Momentum retains Volvo's characteristic simple design style. The "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights at the front are highly recognizable, paired with a vertical chrome-plated grille that conveys a calm and premium presence. The side profile features smooth lines, and with a length of 4950mm and a width of 1958mm, it is not compact compared to others in the same class. The 19-inch tires paired with multi-spoke wheels reveal a touch of business style in the details. The rear design is relatively understated, with vertically arranged LED taillights that echo the front, while the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a hint of rugged SUV character. As for the lighting system, the full-LED headlights support automatic activation and cornering function, providing clear illumination at night, while the daytime running lights ensure visibility during the day.

Inside, the XC90 T5 Momentum's interior uses a light color scheme combined with wood grain panels, creating an atmosphere of minimalist luxury. The center console features a 9-inch vertical touch screen with a clear interface and smooth operation, though some functions require touch controls, which may be slightly inconvenient while driving. The multi-function steering wheel allows for control over cruise control and safety assistance systems on the left side and multimedia and phone functions on the right side, offering a comfortable grip. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch full LCD display, which can switch between different modes and display navigation, fuel consumption, and other information, offering great practicality. Regarding the seats, the front seats are manually adjustable, and while the backrest and cushion provide good support, the lack of electric adjustment is somewhat inconvenient. The second row seats can slide forward and backward and adjust the backrest angle, and the legroom at the middle seat is sufficient for adult passengers, even when fully occupied. The third-row seats are more suitable for children or adults on short trips. In terms of storage, the front central armrest box has a relatively large capacity, the door panel storage compartments can accommodate two bottles of water, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 451L, which can be expanded to 1886L by folding down the second and third rows, enough to hold large luggage or a baby stroller. The air conditioning system is a dual-zone automatic climate control, with an independent rear air conditioning control panel located in the central armrest of the second row, allowing separate adjustments to temperature and airflow to ensure the comfort of rear passengers.

In the power department, the XC90 T5 Momentum is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 258PS/5500rpm and a peak torque of 350N·m/1500-4800rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, the engine reaches its peak torque at 1500rpm, ensuring a light start, with linear throttle response and sufficient power for urban driving. When switched to sport mode, the transmission delays gear shifts and maintains rpm at higher levels, making acceleration more pronounced with a palpable thrust, instilling confidence while overtaking. However, at high speeds exceeding 120km/h, further acceleration reveals limited power reserves, requiring deep throttle input to achieve noticeable acceleration.

In terms of handling, the steering of the XC90 T5 Momentum is precise, with minimal play. It feels stable at high speeds, providing sufficient confidence. The suspension system adopts a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, which are tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs small bumps on the road, and the body does not feel too rigid when passing over speed bumps. However, during fast cornering, the body roll is quite noticeable. After all, it is a mid-size SUV with a high center of gravity, so handling is not its strong suit. In terms of safety features, the XC90 T5 Momentum comes standard with the City Safety system, including active braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. During the test drive, when the distance to the car in front was too close, the system promptly issued a warning and performed active braking, effectively preventing low-speed collisions. The automatic parking feature is simple to operate. By following the system prompts to control the accelerator and brake, the system can complete the parking process, which is quite user-friendly for beginners.

As for fuel consumption, this test drive was mainly conducted on urban roads with occasional highway sections. The combined fuel consumption was about 10.5L/100km, which is higher than the official figure of 7.9L/100km. However, considering urban traffic congestion and the vehicle's weight, this fuel consumption is within the normal range for this class. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise become more noticeable at high speeds, especially when driving above 120km/h. Yet, it does not affect normal conversations inside the cabin. The seats are comfortable, and even during long drives, the lower back does not feel fatigued. The adjustable recline angle of the second-row seats allows passengers to find a more comfortable sitting posture.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Volvo XC90 T5 Momentum lie in its comprehensive safety features, spacious 7-seat layout, and comfortable driving experience. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE, it offers a more competitive price and a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty policy, which reduces the cost of ownership. However, the manually adjustable seats and the relatively small third-row space are its shortcomings. This car is more suitable for families who value safety and spaciousness, especially those who need 7 seats and often travel with family members. It can easily handle daily city commutes and short weekend trips. If you are looking for luxury and safety performance in a vehicle that meets the needs of group travel, the XC90 T5 Momentum will be a great choice.

The first time driving on the highway in a heavy rain, the steering wheel felt like it was part of my hand, and the sense of security was instantly maxed out!

Last Saturday, I took my parents and two nephews to a fruit orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just as we left the city, we encountered a heavy downpour. The rain-sensing wipers automatically adjusted their speed with a "swish-swish" sound, and the LED headlights pierced through the rain steadily with bright light. While climbing uphill, the 2.0T turbo delivered torque at just 1500 rpm, and the all-wheel drive gripped the slippery mountain road without slipping. However, the engine made a bit of a muffled noise during sudden acceleration. The third row of seats was just right for two older kids, and the fully digital instrument panel in the center console allowed a quick glance to read the RPM clearly. But the front passenger had to stretch a bit to reach the buttons for adjusting the air conditioning—if there were physical knobs in the front row, it would have been more convenient. When parking in the orchard's muddy ground, the automatic parking feature got the car perfectly into position in one go. A Malay uncle nearby even poked his head out to compliment, "Volvo has such a magnificent look."

Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands for an outing. When entering the mountains, we encountered a downpour, and the AWD system of the XC90 was very stable on slippery curves. The 258 horsepower also made climbing hills not sluggish. The Nappa leather seats in the interior were comfortable to sit on, but the third-row space was a bit cramped. In terms of safety, the lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking were very helpful during highway traffic jams, and the 7 airbags provide a great sense of security. Overall, this car performed well in Malaysia's mountainous and rainy environment, but the price is a bit high.
