In the Malaysian C-Segment SUV market, luxury brand models are often labeled as "high premium," with most products either compromising on features or offering mediocre performance. However, the 2019 BMW X2 M35i breaks this mold—it not only carries the sporty DNA of M Performance but also packs premium features into a price under RM400,000. During this test drive, I wanted to find out: Can it truly balance daily practicality, or is it merely relying on the "M" badge to stand out?

Starting with the exterior, the design of the X2 M35i steers away from the traditional rounded SUV style, instead resembling a raised coupe. The front features an enlarged kidney grille with a glossy black surround, paired with a sporty honeycomb-style front lip, making it significantly more recognizable than the standard X2. The side profile is compact, with a slightly sloping coupe-like curve from the A-pillar to the rear. The 20-inch dual-tone multi-spoke wheels maximize the sporty feel, with both front and rear tires sized at 225/40 R20, achieving a visually harmonious look. The rear design sees the biggest changes: the dual round exhaust pipes, a signature M-Series design, stand out prominently, while the smokey LED tail lights with restructured internal elements offer enhanced depth when lit compared to the standard version. The lighting system uses all-LED elements with automatic headlights and front fog lights as standard, catering to both practicality and aesthetics.

Upon opening the door, the interior strikes a good balance between luxury and sporty vibes. The dashboard is wrapped in a lot of soft-touch leather with neat stitching, and there is virtually no hard plastic in areas within reach. The instrument cluster uses traditional illuminated analog dials, offering clear readability; a head-up display (HUD) is standard, allowing you to check RPM, speed, and navigation information without looking down at the dashboard—very convenient while driving. The 8.8-inch central display works on BMW’s classic iDrive system, which operates smoothly and supports CarPlay. The seats are sport-style, with electric adjustment and memory functions for the front row. They provide excellent side support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats are split 40:20:40 and can be folded down; they also allow manual adjustment of the backrest angle. It’s comfortable enough for two adults, though the floor's raised center hump might make long journeys uncomfortable for middle-seat passengers. As for storage, the door sides can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box offers good depth, and the trunk boasts a standard capacity of 470 liters. With the rear seats folded down, it can fit items like a stroller or luggage, making it perfectly adequate for family use.

The highlight of the X2 M35i is its performance. Its 2.0L turbocharged engine delivers a maximum of 310PS and 450Nm of peak torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. Officially, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 5 seconds, and the actual driving feel is even more impressive: gentle pressure on the accelerator at start immediately brings a surge of turbo power. Switching to Sport mode activates more aggressive downshifting from the transmission, and accelerating hard delivers a noticeable push-back sensation, providing ample confidence when overtaking. For everyday use, the Comfort mode is sufficient—the RPM stays below 2,000, engine noise remains minimal, and gear shifts are smooth. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with virtually no slack. The body lean is minimal when cornering, and while the suspension is on the firmer side, it’s not uncomfortably stiff—it effectively absorbs fine bumps while smoothing out impacts from speed bumps or larger potholes, retaining an adequate road feel. The braking system comprises ventilated discs on both front and rear, the brake pedal feels linear, and braking power responds promptly under heavy pressure, maintaining stability during high-speed stops. As for fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 7.4L/100km. During my test drive, which involved an equal mix of city and highway driving, the actual consumption was around 8.5L/100km—a decent performance for a 2.0L performance vehicle.

The details of ride comfort are well executed. The cabin insulation is excellent; at speeds under 100km/h, wind noise is almost inaudible, and tire noise is kept within a reasonable range. The Harman Kardon sound system has 12 speakers, offering clear sound quality and deep bass, making it quite relaxing to listen to music during traffic jams. The air conditioning is a dual-zone automatic system with independent rear air vents, and it cools quickly in summer. The seats offer great support and cushioning, ensuring no back or waist discomfort even on long drives. Electric parking assist comes standard, which is useful for beginners, while the front and rear parking sensors and 360-degree camera can help reduce the risk of scraping or collisions.

In summary, the 2019 BMW X2 M35i has clear advantages: powerful engine, agile handling, rich configurations, and a price nearly 50,000 MYR lower than other luxury performance SUVs in the same class (like the Audi S3 Sportback), making it highly cost-effective. It does have some shortcomings: the middle position of the rear row is somewhat limited in space, and the 61-liter fuel tank can compromise the driving range during aggressive driving. Who is it for? If you're looking for a luxury SUV that can handle daily commuting while occasionally letting you have some fun, and you don't want to spend too much money, the X2 M35i is a great choice—it fulfills young people's desire for speed while also accommodating the practicality of a family car. In one sentence: This is an "all-rounder" compact SUV that's worth buying.

Pros
2.0T engine delivers strong performance, early torque burst, agile for overtaking, climbing, and maneuvering
Chassis is well-tuned, stable during cornering, with high body stability
Comprehensive safety features, including full airbags, ISO FIX interface, hill assist, etc.
Cons
The rear space is cramped, the head of a 180cm passenger touches the roof, and three people sitting together feel crowded.
20-inch thin tires need to be cautious when passing potholes in heavy rain, prone to damage.
Tire noise is relatively noticeable at high speeds, and the Harman Kardon sound system volume needs to be turned up to cover it.

Last week, I took my kid to the orchard at the foot of Yun Ding Mountain. Halfway there, it suddenly poured rain, and the visibility turned into a blur. I pressed the automatic wipers, and they moved faster than my reaction. The LED headlights automatically switched to high beams, lighting up even the roadside drainage ditch clearly. The kid was fast asleep in the back seat, while Harman Kardon was playing children's songs. The sound insulation was so good that the rain outside felt like it was behind a layer of glass. The car was very stable when cornering, and the 2.0T turbocharged engine had power as soon as I pressed the pedal. The hill-start assist ensured no rollbacks on uphill roads. The safety airbags were fully equipped, and the ISO FIX interface was securely locked in place—it's clear that the 5-star safety rating is well-earned. The interior seams fit perfectly, and the HUD displays speed and navigation, eliminating the need to glance down at the screen—very reassuring.

Previously drove a Japanese SUV that was too "zen". Switched to the X2 M35i because of its 2.0T engine and 310 horsepower! During the stressful Kuala Lumpur morning rush hour, the 450 Nm of torque that kicks in at 1750 rpm lets me find gaps easily. It's noticeably faster than others in the same segment. On weekends, driving on the East Coast Highway in Sport mode feels great — the chassis is taut, and the car stays super stable on corners. The Harman Kardon sound system drowns out the tire noise, making it very comfortable. There are also some drawbacks: taller friends at 180cm will find the rear headroom cramped. On Malaysia's rainy days, the 20-inch low-profile tires require cautious driving over potholes. However, the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty offers peace of mind, and the keyless entry plus automatic parking make parking at the Twin Towers effortless. Overall, it’s worth the RM398k!

As the owner of a 2019 X2 M35i, after driving it in Malaysia for three years, I truly believe I made the right choice with this little rocket! I used to drive a Japanese SUV, which always felt a bit lacking in power. After switching to this car, navigating through traffic during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour is super agile, and the 2.0T engine with 310 horsepower delivers power on demand. The start-stop system is smooth and non-intrusive during traffic jams. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the xDrive all-wheel drive performs exceptionally well on uphill roads, and the Harman Kardon sound system makes Malay music feel incredibly immersive. The only minor drawback is that the rear seat space feels a bit tight for friends who are 180cm tall, but it’s sufficient for everyday use. With fully loaded safety features, overtaking on highways feels very confident, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty brings great peace of mind in Malaysia. Spending RM390,000 was totally worth it!

As a 2019 BMW X2 M35i owner, driving in Malaysia for three years, the most exciting thing is its performance — 2.0T + all-wheel drive. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, just a light press on the accelerator leaves the slow-moving MPVs behind. On weekends, overtaking on the North-South Expressway is incredibly smooth; its 5-second 0-100 km/h acceleration is truly no brag, much more stable than my previous Civic Type R. The exterior design draws tons of attention, with its coupe-like silhouette and 20-inch wheels. Whenever it's parked in the KLCC car park, people always ask about it. The safety features are fully equipped with 6 airbags and a 360-degree camera. Last time, during an emergency brake on the rainy mountain roads of Penang, there was no skidding. The downside is the rear seat space—it’s cramped for three adults; and the Harman Kardon audio system has average noise isolation on highways, requiring the volume to be turned up. However, as a compact sports SUV, it’s more than sufficient for daily commuting and occasional off-roading, totally worth the RM390,000 price!
