In the Malaysia pickup truck market, models that balance daily practicality and cargo needs have always been the top choice for small business owners and suburban families. The 2019 Isuzu D-MAX 1.9L 4x2 MT Hi-Ride, as a popular option in this segment, boasts key selling points like its 150PS turbocharged engine, 225mm high ground clearance, and a 5-year/150,000 km warranty, attracting many users who value durability and cost performance. This review will cover static design, space utility, and dynamic driving performance to see if it can meet the diverse needs of its target audience.

In terms of exterior design, this D-MAX continues Isuzu's family-style rugged design. The front features a large black grille, paired with halogen headlights on both sides, giving it high recognizability; the body lines are simple and straight, with a waistline extending from the fender to the rear, enhancing visual tension. The 245/70 R16 tires paired with silver rims align with the utilitarian nature of a pickup truck while adding a touch of stability. At the rear, vertically aligned tail lights harmonize with the rear bumper design, and the moderate height of the cargo bed sides makes loading and unloading goods convenient. In terms of details, the black exterior mirrors and door handles create a unified look without excessive decorative elements, aligning well with its positioning.

Stepping inside, the interior predominantly features dark tones, with hard plastic materials used, but the gaps at stitching points are well controlled, giving a sturdy overall build quality. The center console has a simple layout, with a radio and CD player on top and a manual air conditioning control section below. The physical buttons are large, reducing the likelihood of accidental touches during operation. The instrument panel features a backlit analog design, with the tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, and water temperature gauge clearly laid out for easy information reading. In terms of equipment, the standard keyless entry system enhances daily convenience, while the 220V/230V power outlet in the front meets the charging needs of external tools or devices. The 4-speaker audio system may not offer exceptional sound quality, but it is sufficient for listening to radio or music in daily use.

Regarding space, this D-MAX is a double-cabin model with a wheelbase of 3095mm, offering spacious seating for both front and rear passengers. The front seats are manually adjustable, with seat cushions of moderate length providing decent leg support. The rear seatback angle is slightly steep, but the legroom is ample for passengers up to 175cm tall, ensuring comfort even over long periods. For storage capabilities, the door panel pockets can hold two bottles of mineral water, the center armrest box has limited space but is suitable for storing documents or small items, and the rear seat bottoms can be flipped up to expand additional storage. The cargo bed is flat, easily meeting the needs of daily freight transport, catering to small business owners or families carrying large items.

In terms of performance, it's equipped with a 1.9L turbocharged petrol engine delivering a maximum power of 150PS at 3600rpm, with peak torque available as early as 1800rpm. It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. During take-off, the clutch engagement point is clear, and coordinating the clutch and accelerator is easy to master. The low-speed torque output is strong, ensuring smooth starts even when fully loaded. During acceleration, the gear shifts are precise, with a moderate shift stroke. When overtaking at medium to high speeds, downshifting results in a prompt power response, meeting everyday overtaking needs on the road. The official combined fuel consumption is 8L/100km, while real test results show fuel consumption of approximately 9.5L/100km in congested urban conditions and around 7.5L/100km on the highway, delivering fuel efficiency that matches expectations.

In terms of control and chassis, the front suspension is a double wishbone independent suspension, and the rear suspension is a leaf spring non-independent suspension. During daily driving, the chassis' ability to filter out small bumps is average, and road vibrations will directly transmit into the cabin. However, when dealing with large potholes or speed bumps, the rear suspension shows good resilience without feeling overly loose. The steering wheel has moderate weight, with decent directional accuracy. At high speeds, the body stability is good without a noticeable feeling of floating. With a minimum ground clearance of 225mm, it has strong passability, so there's no need to worry about scraping the bottom while facing suburban unpaved roads or mild rough roads.

In terms of driving comfort, because the rear suspension uses leaf springs, rear-row passengers will feel more vibration when passing over bumpy roads compared to the front row. However, for a pickup truck, such a performance is within normal expectations. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are slightly noticeable at high speeds but remain within an acceptable range. Engine noise becomes noticeable inside the cabin when the RPM exceeds 3000, but during everyday driving, the RPM mostly stays around 2000, resulting in decent noise control. The front seats have average wrapping but provide enough support, making long drives less tiring.

Overall, the key advantages of the 2019 Isuzu D-MAX 1.9L 4x2 MT Hi-Ride lie in its durable mechanical quality, ample low-end torque output, spacious interior, and long warranty policy. Compared to models in the same class, like the Toyota Hilux 2.0L or Mitsubishi Triton 2.4L, it slightly outperforms in power parameters while being more cost-effective, making it suitable for budget-conscious users who prioritize practicality.

The target audience for this vehicle is very clear: small business owners who need to balance daily commuting and cargo transportation, or families frequently traveling between urban and suburban areas and requiring good passability. It does not come with many luxury features, nor does it aim to provide driving pleasure, but its solid craftsmanship, reliable power system, and practical space precisely address the pain points of its intended audience.

In summary, the 2019 Isuzu D-MAX 1.9L 4x2 MT Hi-Ride is a "pragmatic" pickup truck. It may not be fashionable or well-equipped, but its durability and practicality are sufficient to meet the core needs of its target users. It is a worth-considering model that balances tool-like utility and household functionality.

The interior feels quite solid, but the plastic texture is a bit heavy. However, it's sufficient for daily use!

Every time I park by the roadside, I can't help but look back a couple of times! These tough and sharp lines really strike my aesthetic sense.

Last Saturday, I took my friends to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain, and just past Rawang, we encountered a heavy downpour. When the 245/70 R16 tires passed through water patches, the ABS and the stability control system kicked in promptly, preventing skidding—it's fair to give it a 4 out of 5 for safety. However, the halogen headlights felt like they were covered with a layer of gauze in the rain and fog, making it necessary to squint to see the road. Upon reaching the orchard's muddy road, the 225mm ground clearance was sufficient and did not scrape the chassis, but shifting to second gear on the manual transmission while climbing required some effort; 150 horsepower felt a bit weak on steep slopes. The interior had a heavy plastic feel, but the keyless lock system and manual air conditioning were adequate—4 out of 5 is just right. As for the exterior, the muscular lines are very manly, but the paint is thin; a scrape from tree branches exposed the base coat, so 1 point off.

Last week, I took my wife and kids to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. The mountain road, just after the rain, was full of potholes, but the 225mm ground clearance didn’t scrape the chassis, and the hill-start assist prevented any rollback. However, the halogen headlights were a bit dim on the mountain road in the evening, and the 1.9T engine required downshifting two gears to get enough power for the climb. As for the exterior, the boxy design looks quite rugged but lacks a bit of sense in terms of design; 4 points seem fair. In terms of safety, it has ABS and dual airbags, and the rear radar has helped me avoid several rear-end collisions when following cars in the city. A 4-point rating is reasonable as it’s sufficient for family use.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just after passing the Kuala Lumpur ring road, we encountered a heavy downpour. Using a manual transmission in third gear to climb the slope, the 1.9T torque felt strong at 1800 rpm, and the 225mm ground clearance easily handled the waterlogged potholes. The vehicle stability control prevented any skidding on the slippery roads. Inside the car, the halogen lights illuminated the interior, which was simple and practical. The 220V power supply charged the child's tablet, and the ISO FIX interface provided peace of mind. However, accelerating to 100km/h took 13.9 seconds, so overtaking on the highway required ample preparation.
