Malaysia's pickup truck market has always been a combination of practicality and performance needs. Many users require vehicles that can handle the complex road conditions of construction sites and rural paths, while still ensuring daily driving isn't too rough. The 2019 Isuzu D-MAX 1.9L 4x4 AT-P, as a classic model in this segment, is priced at around RM115,000 and comes with a long warranty of 5 years/150,000 km. Its core selling points are durability, off-road capability, and relatively balanced fuel consumption. This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle to see if its performance in cargo hauling, off-roading, and daily commuting scenarios truly matches local user needs.

From an exterior perspective, this double cab D-MAX retains Isuzu's signature rugged style. The front features a large chrome-plated grille, paired with LED headlights on both sides, with daytime running lights as standard, providing decent recognition when illuminated. A black plastic skid plate is added below the front bumper, which enhances both scratch resistance and off-road aesthetics. The side profile features straight lines, and the vehicle's length of 5295mm and wheelbase of 3095mm provide a spacious cargo bed. The 255/60 R18 tires, paired with 18-inch alloy rims, give a more upscale appearance compared to entry-level versions. At the rear, the vertical LED taillights complement the front, and the rear bumper also comes with a black skid plate. The overall design avoids overly flashy elements and is fully focused on practicality.

Sitting inside, the interior design is simple, with a dashboard made of hard plastic material. While the touch is not particularly premium, the uniform gaps align with the durable positioning of a utility vehicle. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is a key feature, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and offering straightforward operation logic. The instrument panel is backlit and analog, providing clear displays of critical data such as RPM, speed, and fuel levels at a glance. In terms of features, keyless entry/start, multifunction steering wheel, and a 220V power outlet are all standard, meeting daily usage requirements. However, the manual controls for the front air conditioning and manual seat adjustments make the absence of electronic functions slightly disappointing. In terms of space, the double cab offers spacious front-row seating, with a vehicle height of 1795mm providing enough headroom for a 180cm tall passenger. The second-row seats can be split 60:40, but due to the double cab design, accessing the rear seats is not very convenient, making them more suitable for short trips or for storing items. Although the official dimensions of the cargo bed are not specified, testing shows that it can easily fit two standard-sized construction site wooden crates, making it suitable for small business owners or engineering users.

In terms of performance, this D-MAX is equipped with a 1.9T turbocharged diesel engine (Note: engine type corrected based on model specifications — the Isuzu D-MAX 1.9L variant actually features a diesel engine), delivering a maximum power of 150PS and a peak torque of 350N·m (Note: torque data supplemented to align with actual performance). It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system. During daily driving, the power response at startup is not particularly quick, but thanks to the feature of delivering maximum torque at 1800rpm, it performs confidently when off-roading at low speeds or hauling loads. Switching to sport mode delays gear shifts, keeping the revs above 2000rpm, which enhances confidence during acceleration or overtaking. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 13.9 seconds. While not particularly fast, it is entirely sufficient for a pickup truck. The 4WD system performs reliably on local muddy or gravel roads. By switching to low-speed 4WD mode, the minimum ground clearance of 225mm, combined with sufficient torque, allows it to handle most terrains smoothly. However, without a differential lock, it might struggle with extreme conditions such as cross-axle obstacles.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a relatively heavy turning force and the direction is not very precise, but the play is within an acceptable range. The stability of the vehicle body is good at high speeds. The suspension system combines front double-wishbone independent suspension with rear leaf spring non-independent suspension. The rear suspension is tuned to be stiff to meet load-bearing needs, resulting in obvious bumps when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, but it can maintain vehicle stability when loaded. Fuel consumption meets expectations; under mixed road conditions, the measured fuel consumption is about 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 8L. Considering the four-wheel drive system and occasional cargo-loading scenarios, this performance ranks as mid-to-upper level among similar pickup trucks. Regarding noise control, the vibration and noise of the diesel engine are quite noticeable at idle, and wind and tire noise become audible inside the cabin when the speed exceeds 80km/h. It is more suitable for users who are not sensitive to noise.

Overall, the 2019 Isuzu D-MAX 1.9L 4x4 AT-P's core strengths lie in durability, off-road capability with four-wheel drive, and its long warranty policy. Compared to the two-door version of the Toyota Hilux in the same class, it is more affordable and has richer configurations. However, its interior quality and comfort configurations are not as good as the latter. This vehicle is most suitable for small construction contractors, farm owners, or users who frequently need to haul loads and go off-road. While it can handle daily commuting, its noise and comfort performance are not as good as an urban SUV. If you need a rugged and durable utility vehicle capable of handling various complex scenarios, the D-MAX is worth considering. But if you prioritize daily driving comfort, you may need to weigh your options further.

Pros
The exterior is rugged and eye-catching, with a high rate of on-road turnarounds
Interior is comfortable for riding, bumpy roads don't easily tire you out
High ground clearance (225mm), excellent off-road capability, suitable for rugged paths
Cons
The safety configuration is insufficient, and users feel it is somewhat lacking.
The front row has manual air conditioning, and temperature adjustment requires turning a knob, which is not as convenient as automatic.
The central control has only 2 speakers, and the sound quality for playing music is average.

This pickup truck looks awesome! Driving it around turns heads everywhere, but the safety features are a bit lacking, feels like something's missing.

Previously, the old sedan often scraped the chassis on the jungle trails of East Malaysia's Sabah. After switching to this D-MAX, it directly "unlocks" the freedom of off-road driving. Last week, I took my family to a fruit orchard at the foot of Mount Kinabalu. The 225mm ground clearance allowed it to glide over gravel pits without much bumping, and the 1.9T turbo engine reaches peak torque at just 1800 rpm, making hill climbs easy without deep pressing on the accelerator. It's surprisingly smooth even in Kuala Lumpur's morning traffic jams – the AT gearbox shifts without jerking, and the fuel consumption tested at 8.2L, which is much more economical than a friend's 2.4L pickup. However, there are some minor downsides: the manual air conditioning in the front row requires turning knobs to adjust the temperature, which is not as convenient as automatic systems; the central control only has two speakers, so the audio quality is average when playing Malaysian local songs. But for over 110,000 MYR, you get a 4x4 with keyless entry, LED headlights, and a 5-year warranty included. For a family like ours that often travels between the city and suburbs, it's truly worth it for both carrying cargo and passengers.
