2019 Lexus RX 300 Luxury Review

In Malaysia's executive SUV market, consumers value both the luxurious driving experience and the reliability of the brand along with after-sales service. The Lexus RX series has always been a popular choice in this specific segment. The 2019 RX 300 Luxury, as a mid-to-high-end model in the series, not only continues the iconic design language of the family but also enhances safety features and comfort functions. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether its dynamic performance matches its "Luxury" positioning and whether its practicality meets the needs of family users in daily use.
From a distance, the body proportions of the 2019 RX 300 Luxury appear well-balanced. Its length of 4890mm and wheelbase of 2790mm rank it slightly above average in its class, while its width of 1895mm offers a stable visual stance. The signature spindle-shaped front grille is a hallmark of Lexus, paired with fine chrome embellishments and sharp LED headlights on both sides, resulting in a distinctive look. The headlights support automatic on/off and adaptive adjustment, ensuring convenience for daily use. The side profile of the vehicle features smooth lines with a waistline running from the fender to the rear, complemented by 20-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, which soften the bulky feel of the SUV. At the rear, the continuous LED taillights echo the design of the front, creating a clear visual effect when illuminated, while the chrome trim on the lower part of the rear bumper enhances its refinement. Overall, the exterior design maintains the composure of a luxury brand while incorporating youthful details.
Upon opening the door, the interior gives a first impression of being "organized and high-end." The dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, while the inner door panels and center armrest are wrapped in leather, offering a delicate texture. The silver trims are tastefully integrated, avoiding an overly lavish look. The center console houses an 8-inch touchscreen that is tilted slightly toward the driver, featuring a clear operational logic and supporting Bluetooth, USB connection, and rearview camera functions. However, its interface smoothness falls slightly behind that of some new-generation models. The seat configuration is a highlight of the Luxury version: the front seats support electric adjustment (with memory functionality for the driver), heating, and ventilation, while the rear seats also feature heating functions and can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split ratio, ensuring comfort for long journeys. In terms of space, the 2790mm wheelbase directly translates to ample rear legroom; with a 175cm passenger seated, there is still a two-fist space between the knees and the front seatback. The trunk has a standard volume of 453L, which can be expanded to 1451L by folding down the rear seats, making it adequate for strollers or large luggage. Additionally, the vehicle comes equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air vents, a 220V power outlet, and rain-sensing wipers, catering to the needs of family users in detail.
Starting the vehicle, the 2.0T turbocharged engine is remarkably quiet, producing almost no noise at idle. This engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 238PS, with peak torque available from 1650rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power response is brisk during acceleration, and the turbo engages smoothly without noticeable lag. During daily driving, the transmission exhibits clear shifting logic with proactive upshifts, keeping the revs mostly below 2000rpm to ensure fuel efficiency. In sport mode, the transmission delays upshifting, maintaining revs above 3000rpm, delivering a more pronounced thrust during acceleration and ample confidence during overtaking. Regarding the suspension, the front MacPherson struts and rear double-wishbone independent suspension are tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing most minor vibrations when driving over speed bumps or rough roads, while maintaining stability. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides sufficient support, with minimal body roll, ensuring a planted feel. The four-wheel-drive system primarily operates in front-wheel-drive mode during regular driving, but it automatically reallocates power to the rear wheels when traversing slippery roads or light off-road conditions to enhance traction. However, this system is more suited for urban use and is not designed for extreme off-road capabilities.
In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted actual testing: in urban congested conditions, fuel consumption is approximately 9.5L/100km; during highway cruising, it drops to 7.2L/100km. The combined fuel consumption is 8.3L/100km, which is not far from the official figure of 7.9L/100km. For an SUV weighing over 2 tons, this performance falls into the upper-middle level within the same class. Noise control is also commendable. At speeds under 80km/h, wind noise and tire noise are not obvious; when speed exceeds 100km/h, wind noise increases slightly but remains within an acceptable range and does not affect conversations inside the cabin.
To summarize, the core advantages of the 2019 Lexus RX 300 Luxury are very clear: Firstly, the reliability of a luxury brand and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty give consumers sufficient confidence in post-sales support. Secondly, the abundant comfort features, especially the seat heating/ventilation and rear-row space, fully meet the needs of family users. Thirdly, its balanced dynamic performance, with adequate power, reasonable fuel efficiency, and a chassis tuning that balances comfort and handling. Compared with competitors in the same class such as the BMW X5 25i or the Mercedes-Benz GLE 300, the RX 300 Luxury is more affordable and its configurations are also more practical, avoiding excessively flashy or unnecessary features.
Who is this car suitable for? Firstly, middle-aged consumers who focus on family needs, as they require spacious interiors, comfortable seating, and reliable quality. Secondly, users who pursue luxury but prefer a low-key design, as the RX has a subtle yet high-quality design. Lastly, business professionals who frequently go on long-distance trips will appreciate the seat ventilation/heating and noise control enhancements that improve the long-distance driving experience. If you're looking for an "all-round" luxury SUV that balances daily family use with occasional long-distance needs, the 2019 RX 300 Luxury will be a solid choice.
