2019 Porsche Macan S Review

In recent years, competition in the luxury compact SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers want the refined feel of a brand while also expecting vehicles to combine daily practicality with driving pleasure. The 2019 Porsche Macan S, as a popular choice in this segment, has attracted significant attention thanks to Porsche's sporty genes and well-rounded configuration. The primary goal of this test drive is to verify whether this car can simultaneously meet luxury positioning, driving performance, and family needs in real-world use, helping potential buyers better understand its real-world performance.
From the exterior perspective, the 2019 Macan S maintains Porsche’s family-style design language, with an overall compact and muscular silhouette that boasts high recognizability. At the front, the large trapezoidal air intake grille paired with slim LED headlights on both sides creates a strong sporty vibe; the side of the vehicle features a smooth waistline extending from the front to the rear, with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels further enhancing its sporty attributes. The rear design is relatively simple, featuring connected LED taillights and a quad-exit exhaust layout, aligning with the brand’s identity while directly reflecting its performance orientation. In terms of lighting systems, the LED headlights offer automatic on/off functionality and cornering assistance, providing clear and impactful illumination during nighttime driving.
Sitting inside, the interior skillfully combines luxury and technology. The center console is wrapped in large amounts of soft-touch materials, complemented by Alcantara accents, delivering a refined tactile experience wherever your hands reach. The layout of the center console is clean and straightforward, with a 10.9-inch touchscreen serving as the visual centerpiece. The system supports Apple CarPlay connection, and the operation fluency and response speed are impressive. The multifunctional steering wheel comes standard with shift paddles, and the instrument cluster behind it features a combination of traditional mechanical dials and a small-sized LCD screen. While it does not have the high-tech feel of a fully digital display, it offers clear readability and aligns well with Porsche’s driving philosophy. As for configurations, the BOSE sound system comes as standard and delivers excellent sound quality, satisfying the auditory needs of most users. The front seats support electric adjustment and lumbar support, with moderate enclosure to ensure comfort even on long drives.
In terms of space, the 2019 Macan S has body dimensions of 4696mm×1923mm×1624mm and a wheelbase of 2807mm. As a compact SUV, these figures fall within the mainstream range for this segment. The front row offers spacious accommodation, leaving about a fist's worth of headroom for a 180cm occupant after adjusting the seat. The rear space is just adequate for adults, with approximately two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. However, the central floor hump may compromise the comfort of the middle passenger for extended journeys. Regarding storage capacity, the trunk offers 488L of space in its standard configuration, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases and some smaller items. The rear seats can be folded down in a split configuration, expanding the cargo capacity to 1503L, which is adequate for short family trips. Additionally, USB charging ports and air conditioning vents are available for both the front and rear rows, showing that attention has been paid to the finer details.
The power system is one of the core highlights of the 2019 Macan S. It is equipped with a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 354PS and a peak torque of 480N·m, paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.3 seconds. During actual driving, the power response in the starting phase is very positive, and you can feel a noticeable push-back effect with a light press of the accelerator. When switched to Sport mode, the transmission’s shift logic becomes more aggressive, downshifts faster, and the power bursts out quickly with just a deep press of the accelerator, showcasing excellent acceleration on highways. In terms of driving modes, besides the regular Comfort and Sport modes, a Custom mode is also available, allowing users to adjust the engine, transmission, and suspension parameters according to their needs.
The handling and chassis performance meet Porsche's expectations. The steering wheel has a high degree of precision with minimal dead spots, providing a clear feel for the road. The suspension system combines front MacPherson independent suspension with rear multi-link independent suspension. In Standard mode, it filters out most minor road bumps, maintaining good comfort. When switched to Sport mode, the suspension clearly becomes stiffer, offering enhanced support and effectively controlling body roll during cornering, keeping the vehicle stable. When dealing with bumpy roads, the chassis feels very cohesive, without any looseness, and the vibrations transmitted into the cabin are relatively soft.
As for fuel consumption, we tested approximately 500km under mixed driving conditions, with an average fuel consumption of 10.8L/100km, which is within an acceptable range for a 3.0T V6 SUV. On highways, the fuel consumption is about 8.5L/100km, whereas in congested urban conditions, it rises to around 13L/100km. The braking performance is outstanding, with a linear feel from the brake pedal, evenly distributed stopping power, and a stable body posture during emergency braking, without significant nose dive.
In terms of driving comfort, noise control is well executed. Wind and tire noise are well suppressed during highway driving, and the engine noise does not enter the cabin under normal driving conditions, only becoming slightly audible at high RPMs to enhance the driving atmosphere. The seats are very comfortable, with soft padding and sufficient support, making long drives less tiring. The air conditioning system cools rapidly, and the rear independent air conditioning can cater to the needs of different passengers.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2019 Porsche Macan S lie in its brand value, balanced power performance, and luxurious interior configuration. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 L in the same class, its driving performance is more prominent. Compared to the BMW X3 M40i, it excels in interior luxury and brand prestige. As a luxury compact SUV, it is suitable for young drivers who value driving pleasure and can also meet the daily needs of families—offering ample power, sufficient space, and abundant configurations, along with decent comfort.
In summary, the 2019 Macan S is a luxury SUV that balances performance and practicality. While maintaining Porsche's sporty DNA, it does not overlook the convenience and comfort of everyday use. If you desire the refinement brought by a premium brand, excellent driving performance, and a vehicle that can also meet family travel needs, this car is worth considering. It is not a perfect vehicle, but in the luxury compact SUV market, its comprehensive performance deserves a place.
