2019 Proton Persona 1.6 Standard CVT Review

In recent years, competition in Malaysia's B-segment sedan market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers are not only paying attention to basic practicality for commuting but also expect higher requirements for features and value for money. The 2019 Proton Persona 1.6 Standard CVT, as one of the popular choices in this segment, offers a price of less than RM45,000 along with extensive basic configurations as its core selling points. This time, through a test drive, we aim to verify whether it satisfies the core needs of families or daily commuting users.
In terms of appearance, the overall design of the Persona maintains Proton's family design language. The large front grille paired with chrome accents, while not stunning, is distinctive enough. The body lines are simple and smooth, without overly complex designs. The side waistline stretches from the front to the rear, making the body appear longer. At the rear, the taillights adopt a horizontal layout connected with chrome trims, visually widening the rear. As for the lighting system, the standard halogen headlights meet basic lighting needs, and the addition of rear fog lights enhances safety in adverse weather conditions.
Inside the car, the interior focuses on practicality, with a simple and clear overall layout. The center console uses hard plastic materials, which, despite being average in texture, are acceptable at this price point. A multi-functional steering wheel comes standard, supporting volume adjustment, phone answering, and other functions, which are convenient for daily use. The instrument panel is a backlit analog system with clear displays, providing direct visibility of speed, RPM, and other information. Seats are manually adjustable; the front seats offer good support, making long durations of seating less tiring. The rear seatbacks are fixed, which slightly limits flexibility, but it is sufficient for daily seating needs. Features such as keyless entry, a 220V power outlet, and electrically folding side mirrors enhance convenience in daily use. However, the sound quality of the two-speaker audio system is only barely adequate.
In terms of space, the vehicle's dimensions are 4362mm in length, 1722mm in width, and 1554mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2555mm, positioning it in the medium range within its segment. The front-row seating space is ample, with a 175cm passenger seated in the driver’s seat having sufficient headroom and legroom. The rear row is generally adequate for family users; three adults seated fully might feel a bit cramped, but two passengers would find the seating comfortable for daily use. For storage, the trunk offers a volume of 510L, easily accommodating two large suitcases, meeting the needs for short family trips. The interior also features cup holders and storage slots for small items.
In terms of performance, it is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum power of 109PS and a maximum torque that outputs at 4000rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. During actual driving, the power response during startup is relatively smooth, suitable for daily commuting. When pressing the accelerator deeply to accelerate, the power output is linear but lacks a noticeable push-back sensation. Overtaking requires pre-reserving sufficient distance. There is only a standard driving mode available, with no sport mode, and the overall adjustment leans toward comfort.
Regarding handling and chassis performance, the front MacPherson independent suspension effectively filters out minor bumps on daily roads. While crossing speed bumps, slight vibrations are transmitted into the cabin but lack any harsh impacts. The steering wheel has average precision with a bit of play but is adequate for daily driving. During cornering, the vehicle's body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, providing reasonable stability. For braking, the front ventilated disc brakes offer linear braking performance, with stopping distances aligning with the norms in this vehicle segment.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.4L/100km. During the actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban road conditions was about 9.2L/100km, and about 7.5L/100km on highways. Overall, the fuel consumption performance is average and within an acceptable range. Regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise are noticeably transmitted into the cabin during high-speed driving, but the noise control is decent when driving on city roads and does not affect normal conversations.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 Proton Persona 1.6 Standard CVT lies in its high cost-performance ratio. With a price of under RM45,000 and practical features such as keyless entry, electric folding mirrors, and a 220V power outlet, it has a certain level of competitiveness among vehicles in the same class. However, the interior quality is average, and the power performance is mild, which are its drawbacks. This car is suitable for families or commuters who prioritize practicality and cost-effectiveness. It can meet the needs of daily commuting and short-distance travel. However, if strong power or luxurious quality is desired, other models might be considered. All in all, it is a balanced family sedan and a good choice for those with a limited budget.
