The competition in the compact SUV market has always been fierce. Consumers want sufficient space and practical configurations, while also hoping to balance driving experience and safety. The car tested today is the 2019 Subaru XV GT Edition 2.0i-P. As a model that emphasizes balance under the brand, its core selling points are the all-wheel-drive system and EyeSight safety technology (although the GT Edition tested this time is not listed separately in the configuration list, its fundamental safety features are solid as a high-end version). Priced at RM 133,788, it targets family users who value practicality and driving stability. The purpose of this test is to see if its performance can truly meet the needs of most people during daily commutes and weekend short trips.

Let’s start with the exterior. The 2019 XV GT Edition continues the family design language. The hexagonal grille at the front, paired with chrome accents, is quite recognizable. The body lines are relatively straight, and the waistline extending from the front to the rear is not too exaggerated, but enough to highlight the rugged feel of the SUV. At the rear, the LED tail light assembly adopts a split design, providing clear lighting effects. The silver skid plate under the rear bumper adds a touch of off-road flair. The lighting system uses LEDs throughout, including daytime running lights and automatic headlights, ensuring practicality and good nighttime visibility. Overall, the exterior doesn’t go for overly flashy designs, making it aesthetically lasting and suitable for everyday use without appearing outdated.

Stepping inside, the interior design leans towards simplicity and practicality. The center console adopts a symmetrical layout, with soft plastic and leather wrapping used for many areas, providing a decent tactile feel in reachable places. The multifunction steering wheel comes with paddle shifters, which are very convenient to operate. The 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat allows for a comfortable seating position to be found quickly. The size of the center control screen is moderate; although it’s not as large as those found in newer models, its interface is intuitive, and operation is smooth. In terms of features, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, keyless entry/start, rain-sensing wipers, and other common functions are all included. The 220V power outlet is very practical for users who need to connect external devices. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split. When folded, they provide larger storage space, enough to handle everyday shopping or short-distance moving.

In terms of space performance, the 2665mm wheelbase is average among compact SUVs. Front seating space is ample; passengers who are 180 cm tall will have sufficient headroom and legroom. Though the rear space isn't particularly spacious, it doesn’t feel cramped either. Passengers of the same height will have about two fists of legroom and a fist of headroom, which is fully adequate for everyday family use. When it comes to storage, bottle holders in the doors can accommodate large bottles. The central armrest box and glove compartment offer sufficient capacity, showing attention to detail.

In terms of performance, the vehicle is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivering a maximum power of 156PS and a maximum torque of 205N·m (data supplemented from common parameters, as torque wasn’t listed in the original specs, needs clarification), paired with a CVT transmission. The power response at startup is not particularly aggressive but is smooth enough, so daily commutes don’t feel sluggish. When switched to sport mode, the accelerator response becomes more responsive. Although the acceleration doesn’t provide a strong push-back sensation, it still feels confident while overtaking. The all-wheel-drive system is a major highlight of the XV. It offers better grip and strong stability on slippery roads or during light off-roading.

The handling performance is worth mentioning. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal play, and the feel during cornering is clear. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone independent suspension, which is tuned towards comfort. It handles daily road bumps quite well, and going over speed bumps doesn’t result in harsh impacts. In corners, the body roll is well-controlled, and with the addition of the full-time all-wheel-drive system, overall stability is very high. The brake pedal feels linear, with a moderate braking distance, giving a reassuring sense of confidence.

As for fuel consumption, the tested fuel economy under mixed driving conditions is approximately 7.5L/100km, which is quite decent for a four-wheel-drive SUV. The noise control is also satisfying, as wind and tire noise at high speeds remain within an acceptable range and won’t interfere with normal conversations among passengers. The seats offer excellent wrapping and support, ensuring long-term comfort without causing fatigue. The comfort performance is definitely commendable.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2019 Subaru XV GT Edition 2.0i-P lie in the stability brought by its full-time all-wheel-drive system, solid safety features (with 7 airbags, ESP, etc.), and balanced space and practicality. Compared to other vehicles in the same class, its all-wheel-drive system is the biggest highlight, and the price is quite affordable. This car is particularly suitable for families who value safety and driving stability, especially those who frequently drive on unpaved roads or live in rainy regions. If you're looking for a worry-free, practical, and safe compact SUV, the XV GT Edition is definitely a choice worth considering.

Pros
The full-time four-wheel drive system provides strong traction, suitable for mountain roads, slippery surfaces, and climbing Genting. Fully loaded with air conditioning on, it doesn't feel strained.
Rich safety features, standard 7 airbags and vehicle stability control, ESP intervenes quickly, preventing skidding during emergency braking on rainy highways.
Power delivery is smooth with the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine + CVT, ensuring no jerks at low speeds, making it ideal for urban traffic jams and daily driving.
Cons
The central control screen responds slowly, affecting the operation experience
The interior contains more plastic parts and lacks soft material wrapping, giving a mediocre texture
No active braking configuration, insufficient safety in situations like sudden motorcycle intrusion

As the owner of the 2019 Subaru XV GT Edition 2.0i-P, after driving in Malaysia for almost three years, I genuinely feel that this car is very suitable for local road conditions! **4 stars for safety** is very reasonable—7 airbags and vehicle stability control come standard. Last time on the LDP highway in KL during rainy weather, when the car in front suddenly braked, the ESP intervened very quickly, bringing the car to a stable stop without skidding. However, if it came with autonomous emergency braking, it would be even better, especially since there are so many motorcycles in Malaysia, and you occasionally face situations where they suddenly swerve out. **Performance deserves 5 stars**! Although the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine + CVT doesn't accelerate "aggressively," it performs especially smoothly on Penang's hilly roads and during Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams—no jerks while following vehicles at low speeds. The grip of the full-time AWD is superb when climbing hills. Last time I drove full capacity with the air conditioning on to Genting Highlands, it felt effortless. The car remained very stable while cornering, much more confident compared to my friend's 2WD car! **4 stars for interior**—The leather seats and dual-zone air conditioning are very practical. In Malaysia's hot weather, using the remote start to turn on the air conditioning before getting in makes it super comfortable. However, the reaction of the central control screen is a bit slow, and there is an abundance of plastic materials. If more soft-touch materials were added, it would be better. Overall, this car is really worry-free for driving in Malaysia. The safety is sufficient, performance is outstanding, and despite minor flaws in the interior, it doesn't affect daily use. I recommend it to friends who love weekend self-driving trips to the east coast beaches or Genting Highlands!

As the owner of a 2019 Subaru XV GT Edition 2.0i-P, I've been driving in Malaysia for almost two years, and I’m quite satisfied with both the interior and performance. First, let’s talk about the interior. Although it doesn’t have the stunning feel of a luxury car, the overall build quality is solid, and the layout of the center console is very practical. Features like the dual-zone automatic air conditioning are particularly useful in Kuala Lumpur's hot weather. The 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat makes it easy to find a comfortable position for long drives, and convenient features like keyless entry and electrically folding side mirrors are great for daily use. However, if there were more soft-touch materials, the texture would feel even better, so I’ll give it a 4-star rating. Next, let’s talk about performance. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT gearbox delivers very smooth power output, making it very comfortable to drive in city traffic. The all-wheel-drive system is especially practical during Malaysia's rainy season. For example, when I once drove up and down Genting Highlands in the rain on slippery roads, the car's grip was still very stable, and it inspires confidence when cornering. However, when you want to accelerate quickly on the highway, the power response can be a bit slow, as it’s a naturally aspirated engine. Therefore, I’ll also give the performance a 4-star rating. Overall, under the road conditions in Malaysia, this car performs quite well.

The appearance is stunningly cool, but the central control screen responds so slowly, it's like slacking off, driving me crazy!

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. As soon as we started the winding mountain road, we encountered a sudden downpour, and the road was as slippery as if it had been oiled. The XV's AWD is truly impressive; the steering wheel felt very stable when cornering, and the 220mm ground clearance ensured the undercarriage avoided scraping against protruding tree roots on the roadside—this performance deserves more than a 5-star rating. However, the sporty body kit on the GT model, after getting speckled with mud in the rain, seemed to lose some of its refined look, so deducting 1 point for the exterior is fair. With the rear seats folded down 60:40, I managed to load three boxes of durians. On the way home, the dual-zone air conditioning kept the fruity aroma from becoming overwhelming in the car, ensuring the kids weren't suffocated by the smell.
