2020 BMW 6 Series 630i GT M Sport Review

In the luxury executive car market in Malaysia, consumers often need to strike a balance between sportiness, comfort, and practicality — the 2020 BMW 630i GT M Sport is precisely tailored to meet this demand. As a mid-tier model in the 6 Series GT family, it retains the iconic fastback design of the GT lineup, enhances its sporty attributes with the M Sport package, and comes equipped with a wealth of intelligent features, making it more competitive in its class. In this test drive, we mainly explore whether it can truly balance "executive luxury" and "driving pleasure" in daily commutes, long highway journeys, and occasional mountain road drives, giving target customers a clear reason to choose it.
From a distance, the 2020 630i GT M Sport has a sleek body proportion, with a length of 5,091mm paired with a height of 1,538mm. The fastback lines extend smoothly from the B-pillar to the rear, avoiding the boxiness of traditional sedans while being more streamlined than SUVs. The front features appropriately sized kidney grilles, and the black high-gloss trim and large air intakes on both sides of the front bumper from the M Sport package give the front end a more aggressive look. On the side, the 20-inch dual five-spoke M wheels, paired with 245/40 R20 front tires and 275/35 R20 rear tires, further enhance its sporty stance, while the concealed door handles with keyless entry retain the finesse expected of a luxury car. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt an L-shaped design, with high recognition when lit. The black diffuser on the lower rear bumper and the dual-exit exhaust layout also align with the M Sport positioning.
Sitting inside, the first thing you notice is the choice of materials — the top of the dashboard is wrapped in soft leather, accented with metallic trim in the middle, delivering both a tactile and visual quality in line with the rank of an executive vehicle. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, combined with a 10.25-inch central control screen, forms a dual-screen system. The interface runs smoothly and supports both touch and iDrive controller operation. A heads-up display (HUD) comes standard, showing key information like speed and navigation, so you don’t need to glance down frequently at the dashboard while driving. The steering wheel is an M Sport design, with a moderate size and a thick, solid grip. The left side integrates driving assistance control buttons, while the right side manages multimedia controls, and paddle shifters are also present. The front seats offer memory-enabled electric adjustments with excellent support, ensuring comfort even during long drives; the rear seat legroom is above average in its class. A passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the back will have about two fist-widths of knee room from the front seats. The central floor has a slight hump, but it doesn’t significantly affect the comfort of the middle passenger in temporary seating. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats can be laid flat, expanding the trunk space from 610L to a larger capacity, making it easy to store a stroller or suitcases. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning comes standard, with independent air vents for the rear seats, quickly adjusting the cabin temperature in winter or summer.
In terms of performance, the 2020 630i GT M Sport is equipped with a 2.0L inline-four turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 258PS and a peak torque of 350N·m. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the throttle response is very linear, and the start doesn’t feel sluggish. At low speeds, gear shifts are smooth, with almost no sense of hesitation. Switching to Sport mode makes the throttle more responsive, and gear shifts are delayed to maintain the RPM above 3,000. The acceleration gives a noticeable push-back sensation, making overtaking confidence-inspiring. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.3 seconds, and during actual testing, with ESC turned off and launch control activated, the results matched the official data closely. The steering feel is in typical BMW style — light at low speeds, stable at high speeds, and highly precise in directing the wheels through turns. The suspension adopts a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent setup, skewed towards comfort while maintaining adequate support. When driving over speed bumps, the suspension effectively filters out most of the jolts, without feeling too stiff. While cruising on the highway, the vehicle's stability is excellent, with minimal steering play at 120km/h and slight body roll when changing lanes. During the test drive, we measured fuel consumption, which was approximately 8.5L/100km in urban conditions and 6.5L/100km on the highway, closely matching the official combined fuel consumption figure of 6.6L/100km.
In terms of driving assistance configuration, the 2020 630i GT M Sport is very comprehensive — lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and forward collision warning are all standard. When adaptive cruise control is activated on the highway, the system can automatically follow the car ahead and maintain a safe distance, reducing the fatigue of long-distance driving. In terms of sound insulation, when cruising at 120km/h on the highway, wind noise and tire noise are well controlled, with only slight sounds entering the cabin. The 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system offers excellent sound quality, and when playing music, it can cover most of the noise.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 BMW 630i GT M Sport are quite apparent: First is its design, with the fastback styling combining aesthetics and practicality. Second is its configuration, with features like HUD, fully digital instrument cluster, and Harman Kardon audio system all standard, making it more cost-effective than same-segment rivals like the Mercedes-Benz CLS or Audi A5 Sportback. Lastly, the driving experience is noteworthy, with sufficient power for daily use and a chassis tuning that balances comfort and sportiness. Of course, it also has some minor shortcomings, such as the raised middle floor in the rear row and the lack of a panoramic sunroof, but these are not deal-breakers.
Compared with same-segment models, the price of the 2020 630i GT M Sport is around RM 418,131, about 20,000 ringgit cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz CLS 300, yet offering more features. It is slightly more expensive than the Audi A5 Sportback 45 TFSI, but it provides more space. If you are a 30- to 40-year-old family user who needs a luxury car for daily commuting, occasionally wants to enjoy the driving experience, and also requires enough space to store your children's belongings, then the 2020 630i GT M Sport would be a good choice. It has no obvious weaknesses, is well-balanced, and can meet the needs of most family users.
