2020 BMW X1 sDrive18i Review

In Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market, family users and young consumers tend to prefer "balanced and practical" models — those that offer brand recognition while also considering space, features, and daily fuel consumption. As a popular option in this segment, the 2020 BMW X1 sDrive18i positions itself with BMW's premium brand attributes, standard active safety features, and flexible space as its core selling points. In this test drive, we focus on whether it can meet the dual demands of "luxury commuting + family use" for local users.
First, let’s talk about the exterior. The 2020 X1 sDrive18i continues BMW SUV's tough styling, with simple and unembellished lines. The front features the classic kidney grille, paired with LED automatic headlights and daytime running lights, offering high recognition; the silver skid plate on the lower bumper and front fog lights add a bit of sporty flair to the front. The side profile has a waistline extending from the fender to the rear, and with 17-inch wheels, the proportions are well-balanced. The rear LED tail lamps adopt a horizontal design, paired with a dual-outlet exhaust layout (though later found to be decorative), giving a sturdy impression. The full LED lighting system, along with automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers, adds convenience in daily use.
Sitting inside, the interior quality lives up to BMW’s positioning. The center console leans slightly toward the driver, making operations intuitive; the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display has good resolution, paired with physical buttons and knobs, allowing for easy blind operation. As for materials, the door panels and center console areas are wrapped in soft-touch materials, providing a solid feel. Regarding features, the front seats come with electric adjustment and memory functions, and the passenger seat also supports electrical adjustment, allowing for comfortable postures during long drives. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split, making it convenient for carrying large luggage. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning provides vents for both front and rear rows, and there’s also a USB port at the back, catering to the needs of rear passengers during family outings. The instrument cluster features a 5.7-inch TFT display, showing key data such as fuel consumption and speed, with decent clarity; the 6-speaker Harman Kardon audio system offers sufficient quality for daily music listening.
Space is one of X1’s strengths. With a 2670mm wheelbase, after the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable driving position, the rear seats offer about two fists of legroom, ensuring that passengers with a height of 175cm feel spacious; headroom, thanks to the panoramic sunroof, does not feel constrained in the rear. The luggage compartment has a standard capacity of 505L, expandable to 1550L with the rear seats folded down (not tested, but based on the figures, it should be sufficient to accommodate strollers or suitcases). For storage, the door pockets can hold two water bottles, and the center armrest and glove compartment offer enough space for daily small items.
As for driving experience, the 1.5T three-cylinder engine delivers a maximum power of 140PS and a maximum torque of 220N·m (not specified in the configuration table but evident during the test drive), paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The power response during starts isn’t particularly quick, but once the turbo is engaged after pressing harder on the accelerator, the acceleration feels adequate, making city overtakes or highway cruising manageable. In Sport mode, the transmission shift logic becomes more aggressive, keeping the RPM above 2000, ensuring that power is readily available. In Eco mode, the gear shifts are smoother, suitable for daily commutes, with a decent fuel consumption performance – during our test drive on mixed city and highway conditions, the fuel consumption was approximately 7.2L per 100km, slightly higher than the official 6.3L figure, but considering Malaysia’s road conditions, this performance is acceptable.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds, and stable at high speeds. The suspension features a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension (not marked in the configuration sheet but experienced in practice), tuned to be firm yet resilient. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, it filters out most of the jolts and does not feel too bumpy; when cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, maintaining BMW's handling genes. The braking system consists of front and rear ventilated discs; the brake pedal feels linear, braking distances are short, and confidence is strong.
In terms of noise control, tire noise and engine noise are not noticeable when driving at low speeds in the city; at a highway speed of 110km/h, wind noise can be heard in the cabin, but it does not affect normal conversation. The seats offer good wrapping and support, and coupled with the chassis tuning, long-distance driving is not tiring.
Safety features are a highlight of the X1, with standard six airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and other active safety systems to provide extra protection during daily driving. The combination of automatic parking, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera makes parking easy even for new drivers.
Overall, the 2020 BMW X1 sDrive18i's core advantage lies in its "balance": the added value of the BMW brand, sufficient power, flexible space, rich safety features, and a five-year unlimited mileage warranty make it stand out in its class in terms of cost-effectiveness. Compared to similarly priced models like the Mercedes-Benz GLA or Audi Q2L, the X1 offers more space and better features, making it suitable for family users. Compared to Japanese models like the CR-V or RAV4, its brand and handling have greater advantages, appealing to young people seeking a sense of luxury.
If you prioritize space and practicality as a family user, or if you want a reliable brand with rich features for daily commuting, the 2020 BMW X1 sDrive18i is worth considering. It has no particularly obvious shortcomings and is a "well-rounded player" that balances daily commuting with family travel needs.
