2020 Honda Civic 1.5 TC Review

The C-segment sedan market has always been the focus of Malaysian families and young consumers. Many brands are striving to achieve a balance in terms of space, configuration, and power. The 2020 Honda Civic 1.5 TC, as a hot contender in this segment, features a 1.5T turbocharged engine and comprehensive safety configurations, coupled with Honda’s consistent reputation, naturally attracting considerable attention. This time, we got the actual car to see if its performance in daily driving truly meets the needs and whether its various configurations are practical.
From a distance, the overall lines of the 2020 Civic 1.5 TC lean towards a sporty aesthetic, with the fastback design making the body appear sleek. The front features a chrome trim connecting the LED headlights, giving it high recognition; the trapezoidal honeycomb grille below adds a sense of dynamism. The body side incorporates a waistline extending from the front fenders to the rear, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke wheels, creating a crisp visual effect. The LED taillights at the rear adopt a C-shaped design, which is very eye-catching when illuminated, while the small spoiler on the trunk lid enhances the sporty feel. The lighting system is fully equipped with LEDs, including automatic headlights and front fog lamps, making everyday use quite convenient.
Sitting inside, the interior design is simple and neat, with the center console tilted towards the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the center console area is covered with soft-touch materials, paired with silver trim. It doesn’t feel luxurious but is functional enough. The steering wheel is a multifunction design with paddle shifters, controlling multimedia and phone functions on the left and adjusting driving assistance systems on the right. The instrument panel is fully digital and can switch between different interfaces, displaying fuel consumption, RPM, driving modes, and other information. The 7-inch central control screen supports touch operation with decent response speed. The Sound Plus feature, matched with eight speakers, provides satisfactory sound quality for daily use. The front seats are equipped with 8-way electric adjustments, offering good support, so long drives won’t feel too tiring; the rear seats can be split and folded 60:40, with a center armrest. Seating three adults isn’t too cramped, and legroom leaves about a fist's space for passengers around 175 cm tall. For storage, the door panel pockets can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box has enough depth, and the trunk has a capacity of 519L, which is sufficient for daily use or short trips. Other configurations include keyless entry, rear air vents, a 220V power outlet, and rain-sensing wipers, which reflect careful attention to detail.
In terms of performance, the 1.5T turbocharged engine has a maximum output of 173PS and a maximum torque ranging between 1700-5500rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. The power response during take-off is not particularly aggressive, but once the accelerator is pressed, you can feel a continuous thrust. During overtaking, when the accelerator is pressed deeply, the transmission simulates gear shifting with rapid RPM increases, and the power output feels direct. There are three driving modes: Economy, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, with the RPM maintained above 2000, making the power delivery more active. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal dead zones; it feels light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, providing a good experience. The suspension system consists of front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned to be on the firmer side. When passing speed bumps, the jolts are filtered quite crisply, avoiding excessive bouncing. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, contributing to good stability. For daily driving, the suspension handles minor road surface vibrations reasonably well, achieving a good balance between comfort and handling.
In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 100km each on city roads and highways. The fuel consumption was approximately 7.2L/100km under city driving conditions and dropped to 5.5L/100km under highway conditions. On average, it was close to the official figure of 5.8L/100km, which meets expectations. The safety features are comprehensive, including 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, blind-spot assist, and lane departure warning as standard. Additionally, there are front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, making it more reassuring for novice drivers. In terms of noise control, the wind and tyre noise are not significant during highway driving. Engine noise becomes more noticeable during rapid acceleration, but the cabin remains relatively quiet during regular cruising. The seat comfort and spaciousness are also adequate, ensuring a non-constraining experience during long periods of travel.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 Honda Civic 1.5 TC lies in its balance—sufficient power, practical features, spacious interior, and comprehensive safety configurations. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla Altis or Mazda 3, it offers a more powerful output, as well as additional features like a fully digital instrument panel and electric seats, providing good value for money. It is clearly suited for specific groups: families emphasizing daily practicality or young individuals who enjoy sporty styling but still require a practical family car. If you're looking for a C-segment sedan with adequate power, sufficient features, and ample space, the Civic 1.5 TC is worth considering.
