Specs

The C-segment sedan market has always been the focus of Malaysian families and young consumers. Many brands are striving to achieve a balance in terms of space, configuration, and power. The 2020 Honda Civic 1.5 TC, as a hot contender in this segment, features a 1.5T turbocharged engine and comprehensive safety configurations, coupled with Honda’s consistent reputation, naturally attracting considerable attention. This time, we got the actual car to see if its performance in daily driving truly meets the needs and whether its various configurations are practical.

From a distance, the overall lines of the 2020 Civic 1.5 TC lean towards a sporty aesthetic, with the fastback design making the body appear sleek. The front features a chrome trim connecting the LED headlights, giving it high recognition; the trapezoidal honeycomb grille below adds a sense of dynamism. The body side incorporates a waistline extending from the front fenders to the rear, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke wheels, creating a crisp visual effect. The LED taillights at the rear adopt a C-shaped design, which is very eye-catching when illuminated, while the small spoiler on the trunk lid enhances the sporty feel. The lighting system is fully equipped with LEDs, including automatic headlights and front fog lamps, making everyday use quite convenient.

Sitting inside, the interior design is simple and neat, with the center console tilted towards the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the center console area is covered with soft-touch materials, paired with silver trim. It doesn’t feel luxurious but is functional enough. The steering wheel is a multifunction design with paddle shifters, controlling multimedia and phone functions on the left and adjusting driving assistance systems on the right. The instrument panel is fully digital and can switch between different interfaces, displaying fuel consumption, RPM, driving modes, and other information. The 7-inch central control screen supports touch operation with decent response speed. The Sound Plus feature, matched with eight speakers, provides satisfactory sound quality for daily use. The front seats are equipped with 8-way electric adjustments, offering good support, so long drives won’t feel too tiring; the rear seats can be split and folded 60:40, with a center armrest. Seating three adults isn’t too cramped, and legroom leaves about a fist's space for passengers around 175 cm tall. For storage, the door panel pockets can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box has enough depth, and the trunk has a capacity of 519L, which is sufficient for daily use or short trips. Other configurations include keyless entry, rear air vents, a 220V power outlet, and rain-sensing wipers, which reflect careful attention to detail.

In terms of performance, the 1.5T turbocharged engine has a maximum output of 173PS and a maximum torque ranging between 1700-5500rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. The power response during take-off is not particularly aggressive, but once the accelerator is pressed, you can feel a continuous thrust. During overtaking, when the accelerator is pressed deeply, the transmission simulates gear shifting with rapid RPM increases, and the power output feels direct. There are three driving modes: Economy, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, with the RPM maintained above 2000, making the power delivery more active. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal dead zones; it feels light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, providing a good experience. The suspension system consists of front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned to be on the firmer side. When passing speed bumps, the jolts are filtered quite crisply, avoiding excessive bouncing. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, contributing to good stability. For daily driving, the suspension handles minor road surface vibrations reasonably well, achieving a good balance between comfort and handling.

In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 100km each on city roads and highways. The fuel consumption was approximately 7.2L/100km under city driving conditions and dropped to 5.5L/100km under highway conditions. On average, it was close to the official figure of 5.8L/100km, which meets expectations. The safety features are comprehensive, including 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, blind-spot assist, and lane departure warning as standard. Additionally, there are front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, making it more reassuring for novice drivers. In terms of noise control, the wind and tyre noise are not significant during highway driving. Engine noise becomes more noticeable during rapid acceleration, but the cabin remains relatively quiet during regular cruising. The seat comfort and spaciousness are also adequate, ensuring a non-constraining experience during long periods of travel.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 Honda Civic 1.5 TC lies in its balance—sufficient power, practical features, spacious interior, and comprehensive safety configurations. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla Altis or Mazda 3, it offers a more powerful output, as well as additional features like a fully digital instrument panel and electric seats, providing good value for money. It is clearly suited for specific groups: families emphasizing daily practicality or young individuals who enjoy sporty styling but still require a practical family car. If you're looking for a C-segment sedan with adequate power, sufficient features, and ample space, the Civic 1.5 TC is worth considering.

Pros
Powerful performance, 173 horsepower with quick turbo engagement, smooth overtaking during morning rush hours, stable on climbs
Rich safety features, 6 airbags + active safety systems (lane keeping, etc.), effectively avoiding risks
Low fuel consumption, better fuel efficiency than models in the same class during highway cruising or climbing
Cons
Ground clearance is low (104mm), making the bottom prone to scraping on rough roads; careful driving is required
Rear radar is occasionally overly sensitive, frequently alarming in narrow passages
The rear middle floor is relatively high, making the space cramped when seating 3 people

As a 2020 Civic 1.5 TC owner, I've been driving it in Malaysia for over two years, and I truly feel I made the right choice! My previous car, a Vios, had weak power that was unbearable. After switching to the Civic, driving in heavy morning traffic while switching to L gear for overtaking feels fantastic. The 173 horsepower turbo kicks in quickly, and following other cars in traffic isn't a hassle either. Safety gets a 4-star rating from me; the 6 airbags and lane-keeping assist once saved me from veering off due to a momentary distraction on the highway. However, the rear sensor is occasionally too sensitive and keeps beeping on narrow roads. Interior gets 4 stars as well; the fully digital gauge adds a tech vibe, and the 8-way power seat makes driving on the East Coast highway for 3 hours pain-free for my back. Unfortunately, the rear center floor hump is a bit high, making it cramped for 3 passengers. On weekends, when taking my family to Genting, the CVT is smooth and steady while climbing hills, and the fuel consumption is just 6.2L, much more economical compared to my friend’s Altis! One minor downside: with a ground clearance of 104mm, I have to be cautious of scraping the bottom on rural bumpy roads. Overall, I'm very satisfied—it’s perfect for family use with a touch of occasional thrill!

Sure! Here is the translated content: Previously, I drove the old Vios, and switching to the Civic 1.5 TC feels like entering a new world! Safety is absolutely a perfect 5/5 — 6 airbags + full active safety system. Last time on the LDP highway, I almost got sideswiped by a car cutting lanes. The lane departure warning went “beep beep,” and the vehicle stability system intervened in time. It scared me, but it was very stable. Performance gets 4/5 — 173 horsepower turbo is amazing for overtaking during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang. Although the CVT is smooth, it has a bit of a 'roar' during hard acceleration. However, cruising at 120km/h on the North-South Expressway during the weekend, fuel consumption was only 5.6L, even lower than the official figure! A minor downside is the 104mm ground clearance. Last time, the undercarriage hit a bump on the bumpy roads of Subang Jaya with a loud “thud,” and it broke my heart. Overall, among C-segment cars in Malaysia, this Civic truly offers unbeatable value!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we left Kuala Lumpur city center, we encountered rush hour traffic. The CVT transmission was very smooth in the congested sections, with no jolts. While climbing the mountain, the 1.5T turbocharged engine engaged quickly, making uphill driving effortless, though the acceleration in the later stages felt a bit weak, so performance gets a solid 4 out of 5. The LED headlights were very bright in the evening rain and fog, and the streamlined body design attracted a lot of attention, deserving a perfect 5 for appearance. The rear air conditioning made it comfortable for the elderly and children, and the 519L trunk fit all the picnic gear and fruits for the family, practical and worry-free.
