In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has intensified. When choosing a car, consumers value the practicality of space while hoping for power and features that cater to both daily commuting and weekend outings. The official price of the 2020 Hyundai Kona 2.0 Standard is set at RM 123,888. This price range is aimed directly at families and young professionals seeking balanced performance. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating its spatial performance, power response, and daily driving comfort to see if it is competitive in the same class of vehicles.

From the exterior perspective, the 2020 Kona 2.0 Standard adopts a youthful and sporty design approach. The front end features a split-headlight design, with slender LED daytime running lights on the top and halogen main headlights on the bottom, along with a large trapezoidal grille that enhances its recognizability. The body side lines are smooth, with waistlines running from the front to the rear, adding a sense of layering to the side, while the 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 235/45 R18 tires further accentuate the sporty vibe. At the rear, the taillights adopt a horizontal design, echoing the daytime running lights at the front, and the silver skid plate on the rear bumper adds a touch of ruggedness, making the overall design appeal to the aesthetic preferences of today's younger consumers.

Stepping inside, the cabin layout is straightforward and practical. The dashboard is covered in soft-touch materials, accented with silver trim. While it doesn't exude a particularly luxurious feel, the craftsmanship is solid. The central control screen is an 8-inch touch design, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and Sound Plus functionality. The system is smooth and responsive. The seats are made of fabric, with decent support for the front seats, while the rear seats come with adjustable headrests and a 60:40 split-folding feature, allowing for expanded trunk space. In terms of features, the six standard speakers meet basic music listening needs, and basic configurations such as automatic climate control and electronic parking brake are all included, aligning with the expectations at this price point.

In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions are 4165mm×1800mm×1550mm, with a 2600mm wheelbase, which is considered average within the C-Segment SUV category. The front-row seating space is spacious enough, with a passenger height of 175cm having about a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting their sitting posture. Rear-row space is standard; the same height passenger seated in the back has about two fists of legroom and roughly four fingers of headroom, which is adequate for daily family use. The trunk offers a standard volume of 361L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats, providing ample room for luggage or a baby stroller. In terms of storage, the door panel storage spaces, central armrest box, and front cup holders are designed to be practical and can accommodate daily small items.

Regarding performance, the 2020 Kona 2.0 Standard is equipped with a 1.6T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 177PS and a peak torque of 265N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quite lively at the start, and lightly pressing the accelerator provides a clear sense of thrust, making it suitable for urban driving, including following and overtaking vehicles. Switching to Sport mode results in delayed gear shifts and more direct power output, further enhancing acceleration performance. However, at low speeds, the transmission occasionally exhibits slight jerkiness, though this does not affect everyday driving. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is stated as 7.9 seconds, and actual tests showed it can achieve under 8 seconds in Sport mode, a commendable result for vehicles in the same class.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play. It feels light during daily driving, making parking and maneuvering very convenient. The chassis suspension is tuned for comfort, featuring front MacPherson strut independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, most of the vibrations are filtered out, ensuring the comfort of rear passengers. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and the suspension provides sufficient support, giving the driver a certain level of confidence. However, when faced with continuous bumpy roads, the rebound speed of the suspension is slightly slower, causing minor body sway. Nevertheless, the overall performance aligns with the positioning of a family SUV.

As for fuel consumption, we drove an equal distance on city roads and highways with the air conditioning on throughout the journey. The overall fuel consumption measured was about 7.8L/100km. This figure is average for SUVs equipped with a 1.6T engine, and the daily use cost is not high. In terms of noise control, the cabin remains relatively quiet at low speeds. However, when the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind and tire noise gradually become more noticeable, though still within an acceptable range and not disruptive to normal conversations among passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 Hyundai Kona 2.0 Standard lie in the balance between its performance and features. The power output of the 1.6T engine is among the top in its class, providing sufficient power for daily driving. While its configurations are not particularly standout, all the basic features are comprehensive enough to meet daily needs. Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V or Toyota C-HR, the Kona boasts stronger power and a more competitive price. However, its space performance and brand retention value might be slightly inferior.

In conclusion, the 2020 Hyundai Kona 2.0 Standard is suitable for consumers who value power and cost-efficiency, such as families needing a vehicle for daily commuting and occasional weekend trips, or young professionals who prefer a sporty style. Its space meets the needs of family use, the power is sufficient to handle various road conditions, and the features are practical. Priced at RM 123,888, it holds a certain level of competitiveness among vehicles in the same class. If you are looking for a balanced and cost-effective C-segment SUV, the 2020 Kona 2.0 Standard is worth considering.

After driving the Kona 2.0 Standard for almost two years, I genuinely feel I made the right choice! The 1.6T turbo kicks in promptly, making overtaking during morning rush hours effortless. The rear seats can comfortably fit three friends, and there’s more than enough space for camping gear on the weekends. The halogen lights are a bit lacking on rainy days, but overall it’s absolutely worth it and perfect for both commuting and camping!

Previously I was driving a Myvi, but switching to Kona is really like "upgrading from a slingshot to a cannon"! Safety is maxed out at 5 stars — 6 airbags + ABS. Last time I braked suddenly on the North-South Expressway in the rain, it didn’t skid and was even more stable than my friend's HR-V. Exterior gets 4 stars, not overly flashy; the compact body paired with 18-inch wheels is super flexible in Kuala Lumpur parking lots. However, the halogen lights are a bit dim when driving on the East Coast highway at night, so I had to upgrade them to LED myself. During morning rush hours, the 1.6T turbo kicks in quickly, making overtaking hassle-free; on weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the AWD handles uphill driving very steadily. The trunk fits 3 suitcases and a stroller, with space to spare. The only downside is the raised platform in the middle of the rear row, making it a bit cramped for the middle passenger’s feet when seating 5 people. But for daily use, it’s totally sufficient!

Last Sunday, I drove my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy rain. The 1.6T turbo engaged smoothly, and during climbing, the RPM stabilized around 2500. The four-wheel drive provided good traction without slipping, but the AT gearbox occasionally had some jerks during sudden acceleration. The Sound Plus with six speakers had decent sound quality when the windows were closed on a rainy day. After folding down the rear seats in a 60:40 split, it was able to fit three boxes of fruit. However, the halogen headlights were somewhat dim in the heavy rain, so extra caution was needed on the highway. Overall, it's sufficient for daily commuting and short trips, giving it four stars feels quite fair.

2020 Kona 2.0 Standard has been driven for two years, and I truly think it’s worth it! The 1.6T turbo is super enjoyable for overtaking, and it's agile even in city traffic jams. Three friends sitting in the back seat don't feel cramped, and folding the back seat can fit a surfboard. The only downside is the halogen lights are slightly lacking on rainy days, but everything else is satisfying!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain to pick mangoes. Just after leaving the city, we encountered heavy rain. The Kona's 18-inch tires had incredible grip, and there was no floating at all when driving through water. Overtaking on mountain roads, the 1.6T turbo was powerful as soon as you stepped on it—a 7.9-second acceleration is no joke. However, the interior feels a bit plasticky, but the driving experience is great. The trunk could fit three baskets of mangoes and a foldable bike. Totally worth the price of over 120,000 yuan.
