In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's luxury sedan market has become increasingly intense. Consumers' demand for luxury cars is no longer limited to brand premiums but also emphasizes a balance of rich configurations, driving and riding comfort, and cost-effectiveness. As Lexus's flagship sedan, the 2020 LS 500 Luxury targets users in this niche market who pursue a luxury experience without wanting to pay the premium for ultra-luxury brands. Its core selling point is the rare rear executive-level features and LSS+ safety system at its price range. In this test drive, we will mainly evaluate whether its static luxury feel is on point, whether its dynamic performance matches its flagship status, and its practicality in day-to-day use.

The exterior design of the 2020 LS 500 Luxury immediately reveals its flagship positioning, with sleek overall lines and a slightly low-slung look. The 5235mm length combined with a 3125mm wheelbase gives it a long and balanced side profile. The front continues the family-style spindle-shaped grille design, with densely arranged horizontal chrome trim inside, paired with sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides, offering high recognition. The car's side profile avoids overly complicated lines; the waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 20-inch multi-spoke rims, maintaining the stable presence of a luxury sedan. The rear design is simple, with LED taillight clusters adopting a through-type design that offers a clear visual effect when lit, and the chrome trim below the rear bumper adds a touch of sophistication. All lighting systems use LED light sources, with automatic headlights, daytime running lights, and front fog lights as standard, making daily usage highly convenient.

Inside the car, the sense of luxury is primarily reflected through materials and configurations. The center console is wrapped in soft leather, complemented by wood grain paneling and metal trims, providing a solid tactile quality everywhere you touch. The 12.3-inch central control screen is located at the top of the center console, and its interface layout is clear. It supports both touch and physical button operations, though its response speed is average. The instrument panel is fully digital and offers rich informational displays, with themes that vary depending on the driving mode. A HUD (head-up display) system comes as standard, allowing the driver to see speed, navigation, and other information without looking down, making it highly practical. The front seats are 28-way power-adjustable with memory function, ensuring occupants of all sizes can find a comfortable seating position. The rear seats are even more impressive with 18-way power adjustment, complete with heating and ventilation functions. The central armrest in the rear features a touch screen that controls air conditioning, seat adjustments, and multimedia. Combined with rear independent climate control, it meets the needs of both business receptions and family long-distance travel. Additionally, features like a 220V power outlet, keyless entry, and 360-degree panoramic imaging are not left out, maximizing convenience for daily use.

In terms of space, the 5235mm length and 3125mm wheelbase provide a spacious seating area. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable position, the rear legroom exceeds two fists, and the headroom is about one fist. Even passengers standing 180 cm tall won't feel cramped in the rear. Storage capacity is average, with a 480L trunk volume that can easily accommodate two large suitcases. Although the rear seats cannot fold down, this does not significantly affect its functionality as a luxury sedan. There are plenty of storage compartments within the car, including storage slots on the front and rear door panels, a central armrest console, and the glovebox, all sufficient for daily use. The rear central armrest also features cup holders and small storage spaces, showing thoughtful attention to detail.

Powertrain: The 3.4L naturally aspirated V6 engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 421PS, with peak torque available as early as 1600rpm. Paired with an AT transmission, the official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5 seconds, which is above average in its class. During actual driving, the power response is light and quick in the initial phase, with no turbo lag issues. When you press the accelerator deeply, power delivery is linear and consistent, and as long as you give it enough throttle, the transmission downshifts proactively, allowing the speed to quickly increase. Switching to sport mode enhances throttle sensitivity and makes the steering wheel heavier, providing a more compact driving experience. For daily driving, the normal mode is sufficient, with smooth power output suitable for urban conditions.

The handling and chassis performance align with the positioning of a luxury sedan. The steering is precise with minimal play, feeling light at low speeds and stable at high speeds. You won’t feel like you’re driving a car over 5 meters long. The suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing most small vibrations on bumpy roads. When passing over speed bumps or uneven surfaces, vibrations are not directly transmitted into the cabin. Meanwhile, it maintains enough support during cornering, preventing noticeable body roll. The rear-wheel-drive layout provides better vehicle stability, and the car feels solid during high-speed cruising. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.5L/100km, while actual urban driving hovers around 12-13L, and it can drop to around 9L on highways. For this class of car, this is considered normal.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise control is quite good, as wind and tire noise are not prominent at high speeds. Engine noise is noticeable during rapid acceleration, but it is not unpleasant. The seats have excellent support and cushioning, ensuring you won’t feel fatigued even during long drives. The brakes perform reliably with a short stopping distance, and with 12 standard airbags across all models and the LSS+ active safety system (including blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking), there’s no need to worry about safety.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 Lexus LS 500 Luxury lies in its well-rounded product strengths: luxurious interior features, spaciousness, smooth power delivery, and solid chassis. Additionally, its pricing is more competitive compared to equivalent models from BBA. Compared to same-class rivals like the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class, its rear-seat features and comfort level are on par, offering greater value for money. This car is suitable for two types of buyers: first, families who prioritize comfort during rides, as its rear-seat features cater well to long-distance travel needs; and second, business users who require a vehicle for professional receptions, as its luxurious interior and dignified exterior provide an impressive presence. If your budget is around one million Malaysian Ringgit and you are looking for a flagship sedan that balances luxury, comfort, and practicality, the LS 500 Luxury is a great choice.

During the morning rush hour traffic, LS's ventilated seats are simply lifesaving! Occasionally wanting to have some fun, stepping on the gas instantly clears the drowsiness with a strong pushback feeling, and it's super steady during overtakes. What gives the most peace of mind is that the system alerts about cars nearby when changing lanes, so you're no longer afraid of suddenly appearing motorcycles.

Opened for almost two months, this interior feels really comfortable to the touch, but the back seat is a bit narrow, which compromises the space for my kid's safety seat.

Previously drove the E-Class, switched to the LS500 Luxury mainly for its refinement and safety. The morning rush hour in Malaysia is as packed as a can of sardines, but the 3.4L V6 offers sufficient low-end torque, smooth acceleration without jerking, and the 28-way seat adjustment allows for a semi-reclined position, making traffic jams enjoyable. On weekends, driving along the East Coast highway at a steady 120km/h feels as stable as a magnetic levitation train, and the L2 driver assistance frees up the right foot. Safety deserves a solid 5 out of 5 — last time during a rainy day in Kuala Lumpur, I almost rear-ended someone, but the emergency braking system stopped the car instantly. It was a terrifying moment, but I felt reassured. Minor complaints include the 10.5L/100km fuel consumption in the city which stings a bit, and occasional lag in the rear entertainment screens. Still, at this price point, it offers both luxury and safety, totally worth it!
