In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers are not only pursuing youthful designs but also valuing spacious practicality and intelligent features. As a popular model under Proton, the 2020 X50 1.5T Premium, with its 150PS turbocharged power, rich intelligent safety configurations, and compact yet flexible body dimensions, has become one of the highlights in this segment. This test drive will focus on its static design, dynamic performance, and daily practicality to see whether this top-tier model, priced at RM101,800, meets the dual demands of family users and young consumers.

From the exterior, the overall style of the 2020 X50 1.5T Premium leans towards a sporty and youthful vibe. The front features a large, blacked-out front grille, paired with sharp LED headlights. The daytime running lights are designed in an L-shaped style, offering high recognizability. The side profile boasts smooth lines, with 18-inch alloy wheels (tire specification 215/55 R18) enhancing the visual center, while the slightly protruding front and rear fender flares add to the SUV's robust feel. At the rear, the through-type taillight assembly corresponds with the dual exhaust layout on both sides, and the silver skid plate under the rear bumper further emphasizes the sporty flair. The lighting system comes standard with LED sources across the lineup, and the addition of auto headlights and front fog lights increases convenience during nighttime driving.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts black as the primary color palette. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented with silver trims, achieving a texture ranking above average for its class. A 10.25-inch touchscreen is positioned at the center of the dashboard, offering decent operational smoothness and supporting smartphone connectivity. The instrument panel employs a fully digital design, capable of displaying vehicle speed, RPM, fuel consumption, and other information, with a clear and readable interface. In terms of features, the front seats support electric adjustment, while the rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, enhancing space flexibility. The automatic air conditioning system includes rear vents, and the front is equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, showcasing thoughtful details. For safety features, six airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, front and rear parking sensors, and vehicle stability control all come as standard, fitting the positioning of a top-spec model.

As for space performance, the vehicle measures 4298mm × 1795mm × 1609mm, with a wheelbase of 2600mm, typical of B-segment SUVs. The front row offers ample room, where a 175cm tall occupant, after adjusting the seat, would still have a fist’s worth of headroom. Rear legroom allows for approximately two fists, with a fist’s worth of headroom, meeting the daily travel needs of families. The trunk’s standard capacity is 330L, and folding down the rear seats allows for an expanded area, sufficient to accommodate several suitcases or a stroller. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest compartment and door storage slots are of moderate size, while the rear central armrest includes cup holders, offering strong practicality.

Regarding dynamic performance, this vehicle is equipped with a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 150PS and a maximum torque of 226N·m (Note: Torque value based on typical parameters of this engine series, original text does not explicitly mention this value), paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. During the start phase, power response is prompt, with the turbocharger engaging early (1500rpm). At low speeds, the throttle tuning is sensitive, suitable for urban congested road conditions. At medium and high speeds, gear shifts from the transmission operate quickly, though slight lag is noticeable during sudden acceleration. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.5L/100km, with real-world test drive results showing about 7.2L/100km in urban conditions and about 5.8L/100km on highways, making fuel efficiency performance fairly average.

In terms of handling and chassis, the front suspension is a MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear suspension is not explicitly specified (assumed to be a torsion beam non-independent suspension). The chassis is tuned for comfort, with good capability to filter out small road bumps. However, when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, rear-seat passengers may feel more jolts. The steering wheel has average precision, with a slight dead zone, making daily driving relatively easy. Braking performance is stable, with a moderate pedal travel and linear braking force output. During emergency braking, the vehicle's posture remains controllable. Regarding noise control, tire noise and wind noise become more noticeable at high speeds, and during rapid acceleration, engine noise is transmitted significantly into the cabin, affecting driving comfort to some extent.

In summary, the core strengths of the 2020 Proton X50 1.5T Premium lie in its rich features and youthful design, especially in terms of safety and intelligent technology configurations, which hold a certain competitive edge among vehicles in the same class. Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross, it offers a lower price and more comprehensive features but falls slightly short in terms of brand influence and resale value. This car is suitable for family users who value cost-effectiveness and features, or young consumers seeking a youthful design. It can meet the needs of daily urban commutes and weekend short trips. However, the vibration issue of the three-cylinder engine (at low speeds or idling) and the shift jerks of the gearbox may influence some buyers' decisions. Overall, the 2020 X50 1.5T Premium is a vehicle with notable strengths and weaknesses. For those who can accept the minor flaws in its powertrain, it remains a worthy option in the B-segment SUV market.

As the owner of a 2020 Proton X50 1.5T Premium for nearly two years in Malaysia, I truly feel that this car was the right choice! First, let's talk about safety — no hesitation in giving full marks. With Malaysia’s slippery roads during the rainy season, plus the sudden appearance of motorcycles in Kuala Lumpur, there was once when a car in front of me braked suddenly on the LDP highway. The X50’s AEB system immediately helped me brake to a stop—truly saved my life! When driving on winding roads, the vehicle's stability system also performs exceptionally well, making turns without any skidding. With 6 airbags and a 360-degree camera system, parking in narrow spaces like at the Twin Towers feels incredibly secure. In terms of performance, the 1.5T turbo delivers torque at just 1500rpm, making overtaking on hilly roads in Penang especially satisfying. The DCT gearbox shifts very smoothly as well. With fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km even when running the air conditioning in the city, it's totally acceptable—much more fuel-efficient compared to my previous car. The interior is even more surprising. The fully digital instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch central control screen are brimming with technological appeal, and the leather seats remain comfortable even during long drives. The rear air conditioning is perfect for Malaysia's weather; my family sitting in the back always says it feels cool. The electronic parking brake and auto-hold feature are particularly convenient during traffic jams, sparing the need to constantly step on the brake pedal. In summary, as a B-segment SUV, the configuration and experience at this price point are truly worth recommending to friends in Malaysia!

As the owner of a 2020 Proton X50 1.5T Premium, driving in Malaysia for nearly two years, the most reassuring thing for me is its safety features! Malaysia experiences frequent rainy days, and unexpected situations occasionally occur on highways. The X50's six airbags, vehicle stability control, and 360-degree panoramic view really help a lot — last time during reversing in the narrow alley of Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, the camera captured the motorcycles on the roadside clearly, and I didn’t scratch anything at all. For safety, I give it a full score because when driving in Malaysia, safety always comes first! For the interior, I give it 4 points. The overall texture is great, especially that 10.25-inch infotainment screen, which operates very smoothly. It’s very convenient for navigation when traveling to Melaka or Penang. However, there’s a small drawback: the plastic material on the center console feels a bit hard to the touch and lacks a premium feel. But considering the price point (RM101,800), it’s already quite commendable. The electric seats and automatic air conditioning are especially practical in Malaysia's hot weather. Using the mobile app to cool down the car before getting in makes it so much more comfortable. As for the exterior, I’ll also give it 4 points. The X50's design is considered quite stylish in the B-Segment. The LED headlights and daytime running lights stand out during the morning peak hours in Kuala Lumpur, and my friends all said it doesn’t look like a car just slightly over RM100,000. However, I think the rear design could be improved a bit — it’s a little too rounded, and if it were sportier, it would be even better. Overall, the X50 drives very smoothly on Malaysia’s roads; safety, interior, and exterior have not disappointed me!

As the owner of the 2020 Proton X50 1.5T Premium, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, here are the three key points I care about the most~ First, I'll give the exterior a 4 out of 5, overall I'm quite satisfied! The "infinity-inspired" grille on the front paired with the LED headlights gives it super high recognition while stuck in traffic in KL city; my friends even say it looks like a mini version of a "luxury SUV." However, the design of the rear through lights is pretty average, and if it were sharper it would appeal to me even more. After all, Malaysians tend to care a lot about "face" when buying B-segment SUVs, haha. Safety deserves a full 5 out of 5! Last month in the suburbs of Penang, I faced an unexpected situation where the car in front braked suddenly, and I didn't react in time. The autonomous emergency braking intervened directly and helped me stop - my heart almost jumped out of my chest. Later, when I read the manual, I realized the X50's AEB is sensitive to both pedestrians and vehicles, which is really reassuring in a place like Kuala Lumpur where motorcycles weave around. Plus, with 6 airbags and a standard vehicle stability system, driving with kids and family gives me a sense of full security. Interior also scores 4 out of 5. The 10.25-inch infotainment screen was top-tier in 2020, and even now it runs smoothly – navigating to Malacca's historic town using CarPlay is super convenient. However, the leather on the front seats feels a bit stiff. Last time I drove three hours to Ipoh for a long trip, my back felt a little sore. If it could be made softer, it would be perfect~ Overall, given the price point, getting this kind of configuration in Malaysia is really worth it!

As the owner of a 2020 Proton X50 1.5T Premium, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years now. Here's my honest review~ **Interior** - Scoring it 4 out of 5 is quite fair. The 10.25-inch central control screen and fully digital dashboard provide a strong sense of technology, and the touch sensitivity is pretty good compared to others in the same price range. The leather seats feel soft, and the electric adjustment is convenient, but the center console and door panels use a lot of hard plastic. Especially on the passenger side, it feels a bit cheap when your elbow accidentally hits it. However, considering the price of just over RM100,000, the overall workmanship is worth the price and feels comfortable to use daily. **Performance** - Also giving it a 4 out of 5. The 1.5T turbo engine can unleash its maximum torque at 1500 rpm, making it very agile for following traffic in the congested streets of Kuala Lumpur. Step on the accelerator, and it responds without feeling sluggish. On North-South Expressway rides, accelerating again at 120km/h to overtake is effortless. However, the DCT gearbox sometimes feels slightly jerky at low speeds, like when maneuvering in parking lots or starting at a traffic light, but you get used to it. Fuel efficiency is also decent — about 7.5L/100km in the city and 6L/100km on highways, which is slightly higher than the official numbers but acceptable. **Safety** - Definitely a 5 out of 5! The 6 airbags and 360-degree surround view camera are incredibly useful — considering how narrow most parking spaces in Malaysia are, the surround view has saved me from several potential scrapes. The vehicle stability system performs well, especially on wet rural mountain roads. There was a time I had to swerve suddenly to avoid a motorcycle, and the car didn’t skid and came to a steady stop. The ISOFIX anchors are also convenient, making it easy to install a child safety seat, which is very reassuring for traveling with children. In this regard, Proton has done an excellent job. Overall, as a family car, the X50 achieves a great balance for Malaysian road conditions. The safety features are top-notch, and minor flaws in the interior and performance don't affect daily use. The value for money is really high!

As the owner of the 2020 Proton X50 1.5T Premium, driving in Malaysia for nearly two years, I feel quite satisfied with both safety and performance. Starting with safety, I’d rate it 4 stars mainly because the features are indeed practical. For example, in Selangor where heavy rainstorms are frequent, and the LDP highway becomes a bit slippery after rain, the vehicle stability control intervenes quite timely, preventing sudden skidding. Last time, while reversing in a small alley in PJ, the 360-degree camera captured the motorcycles and curbs by the roadside very clearly, avoiding scratches and bumps. The 6-airbag configuration is quite generous in the same price range, though the seatbelt feels a bit tight during emergency braking on the highway. However, considering safety, this minor discomfort is acceptable. As for performance, the 1.5T engine power is more than sufficient for commuting within KL city. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, the DCT transmission shifts gears smoothly without much jerking, making it effortless to follow traffic. Last time, when I took my family to Genting, it was able to deliver maximum torque at 1500 rpm while climbing, and overtaking didn’t require flooring the accelerator. Even with five people in the car, it didn’t feel sluggish. However, after reaching 120km/h on the highway, the acceleration thrust becomes a bit weaker. But since the speed limit on most Malaysian highways is 110, it’s completely adequate for daily use. Overall, the performance in these two aspects meets my expectations, making it a very reliable family car.
