2021 Ford Ranger 2.0L Raptor X 4x4 High Rider Review

The pickup truck market in China has always been practicality-oriented, but with the upgrading of consumer demand, users have started looking for an all-round vehicle that can "both visit construction sites and handle daily commutes." The 2021 Ford Ranger 2.0L Raptor X 4x4 High Rider is a popular option in this niche market. It not only retains the rugged DNA of the Raptor series but also offers upgrades in configuration and comfort. The primary purpose of this test drive is to see whether it can balance off-road performance and daily usability, and whether it is worth considering for pickup truck users with a budget of over 200,000 RMB.
At first glance at the Ranger Raptor X, it’s hard not to notice its rugged style. The vehicle measures 5,398mm in length, 2,180mm in width, and 1,873mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,220mm and a minimum ground clearance of 283mm. Its high stance delivers a strong off-road presence. The front face features a large black grille with the Ford logo embedded in the center, flanked by Halogen+LED combo headlights. Automatic headlights and daytime running lights come standard, providing high recognizability. The side profile features straight body lines with black plastic cladding around the wheel arches, paired with 285/70 R17 all-terrain tires, further emphasizing its off-road capability. The tail design is simple, with practical LED taillights and rear fog lights. The trailer hitch below the rear bumper hints at its load-hauling capability. Overall, the exterior design is not overly flashy, but every detail emphasizes its functionality and rugged positioning.
Sitting inside, the interior leans towards practicality, yet the configuration does not lag behind. The dashboard features a symmetrical layout with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system on top, equipped with the SYNC system that supports Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, delivering smooth operation. Physical buttons are retained below for easier access while driving. In terms of materials, most areas of the dashboard are covered with soft-touch materials, accented with silver trim for added texture, ranking above average among pickups. The instrument panel is a TFT LCD screen that displays real-time information such as fuel consumption and four-wheel-drive status, enhancing practicality. Regarding the seats, the driver’s seat supports 8-way electric adjustment, while the passenger seat offers 6-way manual adjustment. The seats are thickly padded, providing decent support, and remain comfortable for long-term sitting. Space is another advantage; the 3,220mm wheelbase ensures a spacious rear seat area. Passengers who are 175cm tall have over two fist widths of legroom in the back, along with ample headroom. Storage capability is also excellent, with large door pockets, a central armrest box, and rear cup holders offering plenty of space for everyday items. Additionally, features like dual-zone automatic air conditioning, heated front seats, and a 220V power outlet are all included, combining comfort and practicality.
Starting the engine, the 2.0L twin-turbocharged diesel engine operates quieter than expected, with vibrations well controlled at idle. This engine delivers a maximum power of 213PS and maximum torque of 500N·m, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which ranks among the top in its class of diesel pickups. During actual driving, the low-end torque performs strongly, reaching maximum torque output at 1,750-2,000rpm. The power responds promptly during startup and low-speed driving, effortlessly handling inclines even under full load. When switched to sport mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive, the throttle response quickens, and it downshifts promptly, delivering more direct power output for overtaking. During regular driving, gear shifts are smooth with hardly any jolting, and fuel efficiency is up to expectation. The official combined fuel consumption is 8.2L/100km, while in real road tests, it averaged around 9.5L in city conditions and approximately 7.8L on highways. For such a large pickup, this is considered fairly economical.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate weight, minimal dead zone, and precise directionality, making it feel less bulky than expected to drive. The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear solid axle non-independent suspension, tuned for firmness but with decent bump absorption. When driving over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations with no significant residual oscillation, ensuring the comfort of the rear passengers. Off-road performance is its strong suit. The part-time four-wheel-drive system, combined with the low-range mode, easily handles muddy, rocky, and other complex road conditions. With a minimum ground clearance of 283mm and large approach and departure angles, its passability is excellent. During the test drive, we specifically chose a non-paved road. Once low-range mode was engaged, the vehicle demonstrated strong obstacle-clearing abilities. Even when the wheels slipped, the electronic limited-slip system quickly intervened to help the vehicle traverse obstacles. Regarding braking, the brake pedal has a moderate travel, and the braking force is released linearly, with a 100-0km/h braking distance of about 42 meters, performing adequately.
As for driving comfort, the sound insulation is commendable. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise are well-controlled. Engine noise becomes more noticeable when the RPM exceeds 3000, but during daily driving, it does not significantly affect in-car conversations. The seats provide excellent support, ensuring that your lower back does not feel sore during long drives. Additionally, the inclusion of shift paddles makes driving more enjoyable, and the L2-level driving assistance system (including lane departure warning, active braking, adaptive cruise control, etc.) enhances safety during long journeys.
Overall, the 2021 Ford Ranger 2.0L Raptor X 4x4 High Rider's performance can be described as "versatile." It combines a rugged appearance and excellent off-road capabilities with decent comfort and practicality, boasting configurations that are more comprehensive than its competitors in the same class. Compared to the Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton, it offers stronger power, a more advanced transmission, and more comprehensive features. Although its price is slightly higher, its value for money remains prominent.
This vehicle suits a wide range of users. If you need a vehicle that can handle both construction site work and daily commuting, its practicality and durability meet the requirements. If you enjoy off-roading, its four-wheel-drive system and passability can take you to most places. Even for family use, the spacious interior and extensive safety features ensure comfort and safety for your loved ones.
In summary, the 2021 Ford Ranger 2.0L Raptor X 4x4 High Rider is a pickup truck with no obvious weaknesses. It strikes an excellent balance between power, off-road performance, comfort, and features. If you're looking for a versatile pickup, it's definitely worth considering.
