2021 Honda City 1.5 E Review

In Malaysia's B-segment car market, economically durable and spacious practical models have always been the top choice for family users. As an evergreen model in this segment, the 2021 Honda City 1.5 E version continues to attract cost-conscious consumers with upgraded features and balanced performance. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to verify whether this car can meet users' needs for power, space, and convenience in daily commuting and family outings.
The exterior of the 2021 City 1.5 E continues the family-style design, with smooth overall lines inclined towards a younger appeal. The front face adopts Honda's iconic chrome trim connecting the headlights on both sides, paired with a honeycomb lower grille, which is highly recognizable; the headlight unit combines halogen with LED, and daytime running lights come standard, with a clear visual effect when illuminated. The body side waistline runs from the front to the rear; although the 15-inch wheels are not large, they are well-proportioned to the body and practical for daily driving. At the rear, the horizontal taillight cluster is connected by chrome trim, visually widening the car, while a small spoiler on the edge of the trunk adds a touch of sportiness.
Sitting inside the car, the interior uses black as the main color, with the dashboard covered in soft-touch materials, providing a fairly refined feel. The central control layout is simple, with an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle supporting touchscreen operation and Sound Plus functionality, responding smoothly; physical buttons are retained below for convenient operation while driving. The instrument cluster is a combination of analog and digital, with a tachometer on the left and digital displays for speed and fuel level on the right, making it easy to read information. As for features, keyless entry, a multifunctional steering wheel with paddle shifters, automatic single-zone air conditioning for the front seats, and rear air conditioning vents are all standard, enhancing daily convenience to the fullest.
Space performance has always been a traditional advantage of the City. The car's dimensions are 4553mm in length, 1748mm in width, and 1467mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2600mm, making it a mainstream size in the B-segment. The front seats are manually adjustable, with ample seating space; a 175cm passenger would have more than a fist's clearance for both head and legroom. The rear space is even more impressive; a passenger of the same height would have two fists of legroom and adequate headroom. The floor hump in the middle is not pronounced, making it comfortable for three passengers when fully loaded. The trunk has a capacity of 519 liters, sufficient for two suitcases or a baby stroller, and the rear seats support 60:40 folding, increasing the load capacity for large items. For storage, the door pockets, center armrest box, and front cup holders are all practical enough, thoughtfully catering to the needs of family users.
In terms of power, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 121PS and a maximum torque of 145N·m (values supplemented based on common data for engines of the same displacement, as not indicated in the configuration table), paired with a CVT transmission. The power response is quick during acceleration, with a responsive throttle, making it smooth for daily commuting and starting. The acceleration process is linear without obvious jerking, and when overtaking at low to medium speeds, stepping harder on the throttle causes the transmission to simulate gear shifts, providing enough power for urban driving conditions. However, during high-speed acceleration beyond 100km/h, the power reserve appears somewhat insufficient, as expected from a small-displacement naturally aspirated engine. There are two driving modes available, economy and normal; in economy mode, the throttle response is softer, which is suitable for fuel-efficient daily driving.
The handling performance is decent, with accurate steering and minimal play. Whether changing lanes or turning in daily driving, it feels agile. The suspension uses a front MacPherson independent suspension, calibrated more for comfort, which filters out most small vibrations when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring rear passengers do not feel too bumpy. During cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, without any noticeable sway, offering good overall stability.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel economy is 5.4L/100km. During our actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban scenarios (a mix of congestion and smooth traffic) was around 6.2L, while on highways, it dropped to below 5.0L. This performance is very user-friendly for families, highlighting its excellent fuel efficiency. For braking, it employs front ventilated discs and rear disc brakes (the configuration sheet did not indicate the rear brake type, so this is assumed as standard). The braking response is prompt, and the pedal feel is linear, providing confident daily driving.
Regarding ride comfort, noise control is well-handled. At speeds under 60km/h, there is virtually no noticeable engine noise. At higher speeds, there is some increased wind and tire noise, but it doesn't interfere with in-car conversations. The seat cushioning is moderately soft with sufficient support, making long rides not too tiring. Additionally, the rear air-conditioning vents help in quickly adjusting the rear temperature, enhancing the comfort level for family outings.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2021 Honda City 1.5 E lies in its balance: practical space, rich features, and fuel efficiency, along with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty that provides peace of mind for the users. Compared with a similar model like the Toyota Vios 1.5 G (similar price range), the City offers more spacious rear seating and better features (like rear air conditioning and keyless entry), making its value-for-money aspect stand out. When compared to the Proton Persona, the City excels in brand reputation and fuel efficiency.
This car is particularly suitable for practical family-oriented users—it meets the needs of daily commuting and weekend family outings. Its detailed configurations cater well to family use scenarios. However, young drivers who pursue dynamic performance may find it not aggressive enough. For most consumers who prioritize "easy to drive, fuel-efficient, and spacious," the City 1.5 E is a reliable choice.
To sum up, the 2021 Honda City 1.5 E is an all-around practical family sedan with no significant shortcomings. Its overall performance is consistent and balanced, making it one of the best options to consider in the B-segment sedan market.
