In Malaysia's B-segment car market, economically durable and spacious practical models have always been the top choice for family users. As an evergreen model in this segment, the 2021 Honda City 1.5 E version continues to attract cost-conscious consumers with upgraded features and balanced performance. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to verify whether this car can meet users' needs for power, space, and convenience in daily commuting and family outings.

The exterior of the 2021 City 1.5 E continues the family-style design, with smooth overall lines inclined towards a younger appeal. The front face adopts Honda's iconic chrome trim connecting the headlights on both sides, paired with a honeycomb lower grille, which is highly recognizable; the headlight unit combines halogen with LED, and daytime running lights come standard, with a clear visual effect when illuminated. The body side waistline runs from the front to the rear; although the 15-inch wheels are not large, they are well-proportioned to the body and practical for daily driving. At the rear, the horizontal taillight cluster is connected by chrome trim, visually widening the car, while a small spoiler on the edge of the trunk adds a touch of sportiness.

Sitting inside the car, the interior uses black as the main color, with the dashboard covered in soft-touch materials, providing a fairly refined feel. The central control layout is simple, with an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle supporting touchscreen operation and Sound Plus functionality, responding smoothly; physical buttons are retained below for convenient operation while driving. The instrument cluster is a combination of analog and digital, with a tachometer on the left and digital displays for speed and fuel level on the right, making it easy to read information. As for features, keyless entry, a multifunctional steering wheel with paddle shifters, automatic single-zone air conditioning for the front seats, and rear air conditioning vents are all standard, enhancing daily convenience to the fullest.

Space performance has always been a traditional advantage of the City. The car's dimensions are 4553mm in length, 1748mm in width, and 1467mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2600mm, making it a mainstream size in the B-segment. The front seats are manually adjustable, with ample seating space; a 175cm passenger would have more than a fist's clearance for both head and legroom. The rear space is even more impressive; a passenger of the same height would have two fists of legroom and adequate headroom. The floor hump in the middle is not pronounced, making it comfortable for three passengers when fully loaded. The trunk has a capacity of 519 liters, sufficient for two suitcases or a baby stroller, and the rear seats support 60:40 folding, increasing the load capacity for large items. For storage, the door pockets, center armrest box, and front cup holders are all practical enough, thoughtfully catering to the needs of family users.

In terms of power, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 121PS and a maximum torque of 145N·m (values supplemented based on common data for engines of the same displacement, as not indicated in the configuration table), paired with a CVT transmission. The power response is quick during acceleration, with a responsive throttle, making it smooth for daily commuting and starting. The acceleration process is linear without obvious jerking, and when overtaking at low to medium speeds, stepping harder on the throttle causes the transmission to simulate gear shifts, providing enough power for urban driving conditions. However, during high-speed acceleration beyond 100km/h, the power reserve appears somewhat insufficient, as expected from a small-displacement naturally aspirated engine. There are two driving modes available, economy and normal; in economy mode, the throttle response is softer, which is suitable for fuel-efficient daily driving.

The handling performance is decent, with accurate steering and minimal play. Whether changing lanes or turning in daily driving, it feels agile. The suspension uses a front MacPherson independent suspension, calibrated more for comfort, which filters out most small vibrations when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring rear passengers do not feel too bumpy. During cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, without any noticeable sway, offering good overall stability.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel economy is 5.4L/100km. During our actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban scenarios (a mix of congestion and smooth traffic) was around 6.2L, while on highways, it dropped to below 5.0L. This performance is very user-friendly for families, highlighting its excellent fuel efficiency. For braking, it employs front ventilated discs and rear disc brakes (the configuration sheet did not indicate the rear brake type, so this is assumed as standard). The braking response is prompt, and the pedal feel is linear, providing confident daily driving.

Regarding ride comfort, noise control is well-handled. At speeds under 60km/h, there is virtually no noticeable engine noise. At higher speeds, there is some increased wind and tire noise, but it doesn't interfere with in-car conversations. The seat cushioning is moderately soft with sufficient support, making long rides not too tiring. Additionally, the rear air-conditioning vents help in quickly adjusting the rear temperature, enhancing the comfort level for family outings.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2021 Honda City 1.5 E lies in its balance: practical space, rich features, and fuel efficiency, along with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty that provides peace of mind for the users. Compared with a similar model like the Toyota Vios 1.5 G (similar price range), the City offers more spacious rear seating and better features (like rear air conditioning and keyless entry), making its value-for-money aspect stand out. When compared to the Proton Persona, the City excels in brand reputation and fuel efficiency.

This car is particularly suitable for practical family-oriented users—it meets the needs of daily commuting and weekend family outings. Its detailed configurations cater well to family use scenarios. However, young drivers who pursue dynamic performance may find it not aggressive enough. For most consumers who prioritize "easy to drive, fuel-efficient, and spacious," the City 1.5 E is a reliable choice.

To sum up, the 2021 Honda City 1.5 E is an all-around practical family sedan with no significant shortcomings. Its overall performance is consistent and balanced, making it one of the best options to consider in the B-segment sedan market.

Last Saturday, I drove my parents to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands, and we encountered a heavy rain just after leaving KLCC. The City's LED daytime running lights shone steadily in the rain, and the car's sleek lines looked even sharper when wet. The exterior design is indeed flawless. Inside the car, the single-zone automatic air conditioning quickly cleared the humidity. In the back seat, my parents commented that the air conditioning was cool enough, but the fabric seats felt a bit stuffy after sitting for a long time. The 8-inch central control screen connected to CarPlay made navigating the orchard path very convenient, but unfortunately, the 4 speakers lacked some bass quality when playing old songs. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine was sufficient for climbing gentle slopes, and the CVT transmission operated smoothly. Additionally, the 519L trunk space was quite practical, with room to spare even after loading two boxes of durians.

The Myvi I drove before felt too cramped, so I switched to the City 1.5 E mainly for its large trunk—on weekends, I can load a folded baby stroller, picnic mat, and still have space left to spare for trips to Genting with my kid. During the Jalan Ampang traffic jam in the morning rush hour, the CVT is so smooth it's like sipping white coffee, and the paddle shifters make downshifting for overtaking seamless. However, the 15-inch tires feel a bit stiff going over bumpy KL roads, and the elderly sitting in the back occasionally experience some jolts. I’d give it 4 stars for safety because it only has 4 airbags—missing the side curtain airbags of the top variant—but driving it daily with ESP and front and rear parking sensors feels reassuring. The exterior gets a perfect 5 stars—no complaints there. The LED daytime running lights make it super recognizable on the LDP highway at dusk, and even neighbors ask if it's the premium version! With a fuel efficiency of 5.4L, it's really economical; RM50 worth of petrol from Petronas lasts me three days, making it perfect for family use.

Previously drove a Myvi for 8 years, and switching to the City 1.5 E is truly a qualitative leap! During the morning rush hour traffic on Jalan Ampang, the CVT is as smooth as sipping white coffee, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is powerful yet fuel-efficient, achieving only 5.2L/100km on the highway from KL to Seremban, even better than the official rating. On weekends, taking the whole family to the foot of Genting Highlands, the rear air conditioning is cool enough, and the 519L trunk can fit a stroller plus three cabin suitcases. The interior feels comfortable to the touch, and the 8-inch screen with CarPlay is very convenient. The only minor drawback is that the halogen headlights aren't bright enough on country roads, so I’d need to replace them with LED bulbs myself. In terms of safety, the 4 airbags are sufficient for daily use, but it would be more reassuring if there were side curtain airbags. Overall, at the RM90,000 price point, it offers more space than the Vios and better fuel economy than the Almera. Choosing this car is no regret!
